You are sitting in an open jeep, on the way out for a night drive, waiting for the sun to set. You have become accustomed to the sights and smells over the last 8 days, even though quite confronting at first. But ahhh, it's the sounds that make the night. The remarkable song of the insects, an elephant somewhere trumpeting, the call of an impala sometimes followed by a scream and the growl of a leopard. But it is the hyenas who make the night. The ever-present hyenas with their haunting cackles and wails. These magnificent and unfairly maligned animals with a strong sense of family & social connections. As a thick silence settles over the plains the hyenas' chatter to each other is magnified. It is that sound that remain as my strongest memory of the night. I hope I hear it again one day.

Anticipation for spring and warmer temperatures, anticipation for end of covid, and so on. Maybe one of the strongest human emotions.
Spring has finally arrived. I went to the Public Gardens in Boston yesterday and captured a few tulip pictures. It was packed, given the fine weather.
The 400mm lens worked better for me with the tulips, as it made the background just fade away. I used my older camera for this one.

I thought Cleo should get some fresh air today but I had to carry her outside as she refused to move. The air was too fresh for her taste and she couldn't wait to get back to her bed but she allowed me to take a photo before she did although patience isn't her strongest suit.

If you walk through the upper town of Luxembourg, you will not only notice the imposing construction of many buildings and walls, but also the self-contained and extremely stable structure. You can still see today that the city was developed into one of the strongest fortresses in Europe from the 17th century. It was nicknamed "Gibraltar of the North".

Helicopter Mom? Nah, just a good mother who protects her baby. Happy Mother's Day to all mothers!
*As a side note, when photographing female loons please be respectful, if she gets off her nest you are too close! They usually like a distance of about 40 feet or so depending on the Loon. I took a few shots while the baby crawled all around her, even sitting on her back, then left not overstaying my welcome.
It was a very special few minutes for me that I will remember forever. She never left the nest... Taken from the Streak! (my yak)

This old lighthouse (Battery Point Lighthouse) on the Californian coast, saved many ships from running aground. In 1855, the ship America burned in the harbor at Crescent City. Three cannons were salvaged from the wreckage and mounted nearby on the point at the northern side of the harbor's entrance. The cannons, which were often fired during Fourth of July celebrations, resulted in the point being named Battery Point, and although the cannons have since disappeared, the name remains affixed to the point.
A second event occurred that same year that would result in another addition to the point. In May 1855, Congress appropriated $15,000 for the construction of a lighthouse on the tiny islet that is connected to Battery Point at low tide by an isthmus.
With its exposed location atop a rocky mound, the lighthouse was often battered by storms and waves. One rogue wave broke three panes of glass in the lantern room and deposited water in the tower.
Remarkably, the lighthouse was not harmed when Crescent City received the worst tsunami damage ever suffered along the west coast of the lower forty-eight states. On March 27, 1964, the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the northern hemisphere struck Alaska near Prince William Sound, generating a series of waves that raced south at a speed of nearly 600 mph. The waves reached Crescent City around midnight with crests of up to twenty feet.

This image is the final part of a 3 image set that I made from Trevelgue Head at Port. This is arguably the strongest of the three, with the distant tail lights of cars making their way up the hill from Watergate Bay. The coastal walks around here are excellent, with plenty of interesting wildlife to be seen and enjoyed.
The strongest winds I've ever experienced.... I doubted if I would get any kind of image in very challenging conditions. A few minutes later and the rain was down... well more horizontal in the wind than down!! Still invigorating though... and I have to get back to Skye.
The strongest creature on earth, the Rhinoceros beetle can carry 850 times its own weight ( Elephants can carry up to 25% of their own weight ).
Using its horns it can dig its way out of a sticky situation by burying itself underground, escaping danger.
The horn of the male is not used for protection but rather for the occasional battle with another male over a feeding site.
They are totally harmless that they cannot bite or sting or hurt you with their horns.
