Ijtema 2013

the second largest HAJJ next to MECCA.

Ok my story streamlined.

I went to BDESH for the 5th time to shoot IJTEMA.

NO preparations, put on my shorts

showed up at the beginning of the long stretch

to the TURAG river.

I was the only Caucasian I'm sure with short pants sporting a blue Philadelphia Philly baseball hat on backwards in this very very very very antiquated backwards country.

This was a scene out of the BIBLE.

I admit i showed disrespect, but before i realized it i was just dressing like I always did in the old days when i shot in hot countries.

The looks i got were not very inviting, as i strolled along with the crowd.

Crowds began to form around me as if i was some kind of animal.

Mean spirited looks i thought, for no one wanted to shake hands or ask me anything.

In about 30 minutes i was asked to leave. i imagine because of photography phobia or my attire.. " Go Go Go no photo "

I could have stood my ground and made a fuss. Instead i walked away from the mass of people and headed out of TONGI to DHAKA.

As you can see i stopped the action here.

Next year ill wear a New York Yankees white hat instead.

The line at the post office wasn’t too long for once, thankfully. The process had become pretty streamlined by now. Box whatever you were shipping, ID chip and barcode them accordingly, hand it off to the lady behind the counter, and have faith in Pittsburgh’s postage system. Out of sight, out of mind.

The next point on her route was the armory. Dijon wasn’t in at the time. Instead, one of the assistant armorers was in his place. Younger blood amongst the armory team, but fortunately he didn’t give Kelly too much trouble. Signing back in arms had become routine. Registering and pawning off salvaged ones was a different story.

With all her business attended to, she began making her way up to the habitation levels. Her next patrol shift wasn’t until later in the afternoon, so she had a few hours of free time to burn.

To get to the main habitation complex, she had to go through the farming sector. ‘The Solarium’, as it was colloquially called, was a massive food producing greenhouse built to support the population of Schenley. It was one of the few places in the outpost where a person could experience almost direct sunlight, filtered through the multiple layers of paneled glass which encased the facility. It was even recommended for citizens to pass through regularly. On top of getting a good source of vitamin D, the regulated humidity and natural oxygen production made the air quality the best within the entire outpost.

The Solarium was a blend of several different mediums of agriculture. From garden-variety farming techniques to more advanced hydroponics and aeroponics. Vertical farming had been implemented to maximize space, but the area still didn’t feel too cramped. Long aisles of crop rows, complemented by the dozen or so grow towers which jutted up to the ceiling.

Over the years various additional fruit, vegetable, and herb species had been imported and introduced into the crop selection. Aside from providing picky eaters more choices, it was primarily intended as a contingency against crop dependence. If for whatever reason one crop failed, they still had backups to rely on. Regardless, Kelly enjoyed having the choice between red or green onions.

As she continued along the catwalk through the greenhouse, a trio of pigeons flew by. Pigeon keeping had become one of the many popular small-scale alternatives to old-world animal factory farming, alongside rabbit and quail. The downsizing of animal agriculture made it easier to spare the space amongst the more remote outposts. Something of a grassroots community effort.

Goat and pig were still the primary sources of meat in Pittsburgh, though that required far more specialized zoning within the outposts.

The windows gave a clear view of the abandoned world beyond. The dilapidated buildings of Oakland, the looming University construction site, with the derelict skyscrapers of downtown Pittsburgh just barely peeking over the ridgeline to the far west.

Most governments that took shape after The Choke decided upon a full transparency approach; choosing not to hide the old world from their inhabitants. A person could look out a window and see the real world that lay beyond it.

Some saw it as a backhanded source of hope. It gave people a view of what the world had once been, and ‘inspire them to rebuild it anew’, or however the figures in government had put it.

Still, the natural lighting and overgrown landscape helped make things a little less depressing inside the outposts. It gave the illusion they weren’t completely shut in from the rest of the world. At least they weren’t locked away in some hole in the ground.

Recommended music:

'Feed the Dogs for Me' by Lorn

------------------------------------

I put the recommended music at the end, since its a shorter track. Too short to listen to while reading. But it still gives the atmosphere I was going for with this part. *Dramatic pan over the desolate world that lay outside!* Or something like that.

As I implied with the previous part, I was really dreading this scene. I knew ahead of time that what I had in my head was pretty ambitious compared to the previous scenes. I still don't think I executed it to my full vision. Kind of that compromise between *What am I picturing?* vs *What is actually feasible for me to make?*

The depth of field makes it so you can't even distinguish majority of the detail in the background cityscape. I'm still struggling to find that happy medium.

Moving on to the actual story, this part is kind of meant to dispel the impression some people have had, thinking the outposts are like something out of Metro or Fallout. No, they're above ground. There are windows. You've got the nice cinematic view of the old world outside. There are a few other things I'd mention, but I'll leave it until someone decides to bring them up in the comments.

If you fave, comment as well!

The weekly Railway Age magazine from the 1930s was filled with all kinds of wonderful graphics of the early streamliner era- this one by ALCO advertising "ALCO Quality Forgings" used in the new streamlined steam locomotives for the New York Central, from the 4-2-38 edition. This is the right hand page from a two-page spread,

Pentax 6x7 // Takumar 150mm // ilford HP5

This ergonomic and streamlined battle rifle is perfectly suitable for operators and sport shooters alike. She's reliable, light-weight and dead accurate.

Chambered in the battle-proven 7.62x51mm NATO, this beautiful beast packs a real punch. On fully automatic, it rocks a steady fire rate of 650 rounds per minute, giving the user the ability to control the recoil remarkably well.

Quicksilver Ind. produces top of the line firearms made for easy and cheap mass production, while maintaining very high quality. Our firearms will always be fully ambidextrous, two toned, operator-friendly and accessory-friendly.

The road (partially seen) running diagonally from the bottom of the image to the mid-right, is the famous Madison Avenue, from 30th East Street to 25th East Street.

This is most of NoMad ("NOrth of MADison Square Park"), a neighbourhood centred on the Madison Square North Historic District in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. The area is described on some websites as New York's hottest up-and-coming neighbourhood. Certainly some of the apartments advertised in those four blocks are enormous...

The name NoMad, which has been in use since 1999, is derived from the area’s location north of Madison Square Park. The neighborhood is bordered by East 25th Street to the south, East 29th or East 30th Street to the north, Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) to the west and Madison or Lexington Avenue to the east.

The building in the bottom left corner of the image is 79 Madison Avenue, a 17-storey, 250,000-square-foot Art Deco building with a beautiful entrance featuring a restored marble lobby, inspiring chandeliers and a gold leaf ceiling.

Dominating the mid-right of the image is the New York Life Insurance Building, located at 51 Madison Avenue, across from Madison Square Park. It is the headquarters of the New York Life Insurance Company. Designed in 1926 by Cass Gilbert, who also designed the landmark Woolworth Building, it was apparently inspired by Salisbury Cathedral in Wiltshire. It rises 40 stories to its pyramidal gilded roof and occupies the full block between 26th and 27th Streets, Madison Avenue and Park Avenue South, a rarity in Manhattan. The building is 187m tall and was the last significant Gilbert skyscraper in Manhattan.

Previously, from 1837–1889, the site was occupied by the Union Depot of the New York and Harlem and the New York and New Haven Railroads, a concert garden, and P T Barnum's Hippodrome. Until 1925, the site housed the first two Madison Square Gardens, the second one designed by architect Stanford White.

The building was completed in 1928 after two years of construction at the cost of $21 million. It combines streamlined Gothic details and distinctly Moderne massing. The gold pyramid at the top consists of 25,000 gold-leaf tiles. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The 12 story St. Moritz Hotel located at 1565 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach is a significant historic landmark within the Art Deco Historic District.

Origin and Design

Established: The hotel was built in 1939 during Miami Beach's Art Deco boom.

The original St. Moritz Hotel in Miami Beach, now part of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, was designed by architect Roy F. France, a key figure in Miami Beach's Art Deco development, opening in 1939 and blending Art Deco style with modern design elements.

Key Architects & Influences:

Roy F. France (Original Design): France designed the iconic 1939 structure, contributing to the Art Deco Historic District's vast collection of buildings.

Zyscovich Architects (Restoration): Miami Beach hotels underwent significant restoration by Zyscovich Architects in 1996, preserving its historic features while integrating modern additions like the new tower.

The hotel is a landmark, showcasing the Art Deco style popular in the era, and is now a significant part of Miami Beach's architectural landscape.

Style: The building is a prime example of Art Deco/Streamline Moderne architecture, featuring geometric patterns and streamlined forms intended to evoke modern luxury.

Naming: Its name was inspired by the famous Swiss alpine resort town of St. Moritz to associate the property with European elegance and exclusivity.

Golden Era and Decline

1940s–1950s: During its peak, the St. Moritz was a social hub for tourists and celebrities, benefiting from its central location near other iconic venues like the Fontainebleau.

Late 20th Century: By the early 1980s, the hotel had fallen into disrepair, described by some visitors as being in poor condition.

Preservation and Modern Integration

Integration into Loews: In the mid-1990s, the St. Moritz was saved from potential demolition through historic preservation efforts. It was fully restored and integrated into the Loews Miami Beach Hotel complex, which opened in 1998.

Current Status: Today, the original building serves as the St. Moritz Tower of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, housing a portion of the resort's guest rooms while maintaining its historic Art Deco facade.

Historic Recognition: It is a contributing structure to the Miami Beach Architectural District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Baltimore & Ohio's class P-7 Pacifics were known as "The Presidents." Delivered by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1927, they originally bore the names of the first 21 Presidents of the United States (the two Adamses sharing one locomotive). In the late 1930s, 5304 PRESIDENT MONROE, was streamlined for service on the B&O Royal Blue train between Washington and New York. The bulletnosed streamlining by famed designer Otto Kuhler became the model for a popular American Flyer toy train

In 1946 B&O streamlined 5301-5304 for service on the Cincinnatian between Washington and Cincinnati; the train was shifted to a Detroit-Cincinnati run in 1950. As rebuilt, 5304 was reclassified P-7d. The locomotive weight was 316,000 pounds. 5304 was displayed at the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1948. The streamlining was later removed and No. 5304's designation reverted to P-7

Tree Swallows are streamlined small songbirds with long, pointed wings and a short, squared or slightly notched tail. Their bills are very short and flat.

Adult males are blue-green above and white below with blackish flight feathers and a thin black eye mask; females are duller with more brown in their upper parts, and juveniles are completely brown above. Juveniles and some females can show a weak, blurry gray-brown breast band.

Tree Swallows feed on small, aerial insects that they catch in their mouths during acrobatic flight. After breeding, tree swallows gather in large flocks to molt and migrate. In the non-breeding season, they form huge communal roosts.

They breed in open habitats such as fields and wetlands usually adjacent to water. They nest in artificial nest boxes as well as tree cavities. Foraging flocks are frequently seen over wetlands, water, and agricultural fields.

Knuckles Range

is an endemic frog from the Knuckles Mountain Range. I was with Mr. Sameera and Dr Anslem.

IUCN status: Kirtisinghe's rock frog seems to be declining in numbers and it is listed as "Critically endangered" in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This is because it occurs as several separate populations in a total area of only 100 square kilometres (39 sq mi) and its habitat is being lost because of livestock grazing and tourism, and the streams in which it lives may be being polluted by agrochemicals from tea and cardamom plantations.

What a marvellous magazine cover by L Ashwell Wood showing the tube train wonder of the age speeding through a tube tunnel under London! The driver can be seen in the cut-away with controls looking much like an American PCC streetcar - joystick controls- and certainly not like London's tube trains of the day or the future. It is interesting in that by 1938 the new tube trains being delivered to London Transport would not have the streamlining as seen here that was trialled in 1935. The prototype streamliners were reconstructed with flat cab fronts and the 1938-tube stock went on to be the epitome of a London tube train for many years. The asbestos lined tunnels - a few sections were experimentally fitted, long before the true dangers of this material were understood, and the sections later had to be expensively decontaminated.

It is unknown if streamlined cabooses reduced wind drag or made trains faster, but some of them sure were cool looking!

Watching this graceful gator, it's easy to see how they're perfectly suited for their environment and have been around for around 200 million years.

Due to an impending storm, it got gloomy in the afternoon and I had the spring all to myself, or so I thought.

While I was prowling the bank for a turtle I had just spotted, this one decided to come out to join me. Luckily, I spotted it first, and had time to turn on my light and move in close enough for some shots.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

5 Who is your favorite artist? What is it? Make it clear.

6 Creating a collage is exactly the same as taking photos. As I wrote in the interview, it is the same as writing a novel.

7 I want to show it to someone, but I do not make a piece to show it. Aim for the work you want to decorate your own room as in the photo.

8 What is copycat? Nowadays, it is suspected to be beaten. There is something called Mimesis?

ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimesis

9 What is Individuality? What is originality?

It is a flow of.

If you have time, please listen.

New Haven Railroad with a display of The Rexall Train's New York Central streamlined L-2c class 4-8-2 Mohawk steam locomotive with onlookers and observers present on the platform at Union Station in New Haven, Connecticut, 8-25-1936. You can see someone in the engineer's cab window, and perhaps it is a hostler keeping the fire under control. In this view you may observe the full streamlining of the steam locomotive and tender. The car coupled to the tender is the Kantleek, which is a baggage-club car that was previously known as Whitney under Pullman ownership. It is being used mainly for storage and to provide work space for the crew and staff. However; the car also contains generators and other required equipment to power the Electro-Mechanical air-conditioning systems and lights. So this in reality is an early day HEP system. The steam locomotive is NYC Mohawk 2873.

The Shape of Speed

Streamlined Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1930–1942

JUN 16 – SEP 16, 2018

Portland Art Museum

The Portland Art Museum is pleased to announce The Shape of Speed: Streamlined Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1930–1942, a special exhibition debuting at the Museum in Summer 2018. Featuring 19 rare streamlined automobiles and motorcycles, The Shape of Speed opens June 16 and will be on view through September 16, 2018.

The concept of streamlining has fascinated people for generations. Beginning in the 1930s and extending until the outbreak of the World War II, automotive designers embraced the challenge of styling and building truly streamlined cars that were fast and fuel-efficient. They were encouraged by the confluence of aircraft design with the sleek shapes of fast railroad locomotives; new advanced highways such as the Autobahns; and events like the 1939 New York City World’s Fair, which showcased futuristic design.

The Shape of Speed presents a select group of rare automobiles and motorcycles that demonstrate how auto designers translated the concept of aerodynamic efficiency into exciting machines that in many cases, looked as though they were moving while at rest.

The Museum will display 17 cars and two motorcycles—the best of that era’s streamlined offerings—from Europe and the United States. Engineering drawings and period photographs will show some of the aircraft, railroad, ship and yacht designs that influenced the automakers.

Featured designers and engineers include European streamlining pioneer Paul Jaray, along with Richard Buckminster Fuller, Norman Bel Geddes, Raymond Loewy, Harley J. Earl, Hermann Ahrens, Georges Paulin, Joseph Figoni, Dr. Wunibald Kamm, Otto Kuhler, Jean Bugatti, Hans Ledwinka, Gordon Buehrig, and others.

This strange streamlined tank locomotive was built in 1936 and used successfully with its three other classmates on fast trains out of Budapest until the 1960's, including the 'Orient Express'. Piliscsaba, September 2002

The Coronation was LNER's streamlined express passenger train between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley. Named to mark the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, it was inaugurated on 5 July 1937. The train's streamlined design was based on that of The Silver Jubilee, but instead of being painted silver it was given a two-tone blue livery. Internally it was decorated in the Art Deco style

In 1937, LNER built two observation coaches at Doncaster Works for use on The Coronation express passenger train during the summer months. Looking quite different to the teak coaches, they in many respects resembled the LNER Class A4 locomotives that hauled the train. The carriages had a conventional corridor connection at one end and a deeply glazed tapered end at the other. Both were fitted out with and a luxury bar/lounge combination

During the Second World War both were put in storage and, in 1959, E1719E was rebuilt by British Railways with larger panoramic windows for West Highland Line specials. The other coach, numbered E1729E, went into a long period of storage at Steamtown, Carnforth. Both coaches survive today in the hands of Railway Vehicle Preservations Ltd on the preserved Great Central Railway, Loughborough, where they allow first class ticket holders to travel in restored E1719E

The observation cars had a distinctive "beaver tail" shape. They ran in this form until the Second World War when the train's coaches were put in store. In 1948, various vehicles returned to service as general passenger stock, but they never ran as a full set again - the observation cars were transferred to the West Highland line in 1956. Their original observation end was found to give limited views, so British Railways rebuilt them with a more angled end and added larger windows, running in this form from 1959 to 1968

The New York Central K-5b Pacific Class 4-6-2 steam locomotive #4915 with Henry Dreyfuss' streamline design. Originally manufactured in 1926 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), no. 4915 and her sister no. 4917 were streamlined in 1936 to lead The New York Central’s most luxurious experience on rails.

This project is my first MOC and has taken about a year and a half to complete with many challenges arising in trying to obtain the beautiful "streamline moderne" styling. Perseverance paid off however and through 1/2 steps, 1/3 steps and even 1/6 steps I have ended with a final version that I hope you all will enjoy.

The model is 8-wide, built to 1:48 scale and is designed to fit all standard lego track geometry. The locomotive is powered by two Power Functions M motors.

Directions to the build can be found here:

In the early 1930s the concept of fast and economical built streamlined cars became very popular. Not only in the US but mainly in Germany and Middle-European countries avant-garde ideas were put into practice.

The Tatra T77 was first presented at the Prague Car Salon in March 1934. In the same month the T77 made its German public debut on the Berlin IAMA motor show. Here this futuristic car was admired by Führer Adolf Hitler. Already in Dec. 1933 he made some sketches of an streamlined rear-engined small car affordable for the common people. In the Tatra concept he found confirmation of his ideas and ordered Ferdinand Porsche to develop such an innovative car. We all know the outcome...

The Tatra T77 was based on the ideas about aerodynamics by designer and engineer Paul Jaray (Hungary, 1889-1974). Technical engineer was Hans Ledwinka (Austria, 1878-1967, also designer and engineer), while the body was designed by engineer and car designer Erich Übelacker (Czech, 1899-1977).

Jaray was an early pioneer in streamlined airplanes and car bodies. Ledwinka invented the so called backbone chassis: a frameless central tubular chassis with swing axles and with independent suspension. He had a preference for rear-mounted air-cooled engines, which were applied in all streamlined Tatras. The revolutionary ideas of these automotive inventors resulted in one of the greatest cars ever, at least to my opinion.

In 1935 Ledwinka initiated an improved version of the T77 which was called T77a.

The Tatra T77 was the first successfully serial produced rear-engined car according to the streamlined principles.

In the late 1990s there were some festivities in Holland in the context of the 100 year anniversary of the automobile. There was made a list of the 100 most influential cars in automotive history. Tatra was not on that list. That was really incredible to me.

The other three cars in the row are unknown to me. Early 1930s cars are usually hard to determine exactly.

Although Panhard was known for its quirky and different post-war cars, the pre-war ones were even more odd ones.

The extravagant Dynamic was very special. Especially when you know it was a factory made model. The streamlined car had all kind of new features like a three-piece windscreen with three wipers.

It was designed by P&L's in-house designer Louis Bionier, and introduced at the Paris Motor show in Oct. 1936.

Note the central position of the steering wheel. After drivers had complained about it the wheel regained its conventional position.

The 'SS' on the grille stands for 'sans soupapes' which means without valves.

IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE:

====================

The Welta Weltini is one of the many 35mm rangefinder (or not) cameras that emerged in the wake of the famous Leicas and specially the Kodak Retinas and its (still valid) 35mm daylight standard cassettel. Although not one of the most known cameras, the Weltini is undoubtedly one of the most aesthetically successful designs, with its streamlined shapes, which makes it easier to carry it in a pocket.

It has a somewhat peculiar lens, since I have not found any indications that the Weltini mounted it as usual. This is a Steinheil Cassarit f2.8, 50mm, in a Compur Rapid shutter. In fact, for the serial number of the shutter it seems that it was manufactured in 1939. The usual lenses for the Weltini were the Xenar, Tessar and Elmar. In any case, I have found some Welta cameras with a Steinheil Cassar, but not the Cassarit. Perhaps this is a later modification. In fact, it might be that this lens only was produced after the war, but clearly this particular camera was manufactured and sold before or during World War II. You will see why.

This camera has a small, more disturbing secret on its back, a detail that refers to the years of the III Reich. It was sold to it's first owner by Ballin & Rabe photo stores, from Halle (Saale), as seen by the typical commercial plaquette that many cameras of the time have. But one of the stores of this firma was at the adress Adolf Hitler Ring, 14!
