This is downtown view that greets me every time I emerge from my barber’s after a haircut. Snell Tower is always an uplifting sight, and the NRHP-listed building celebrates its centenary this year. The half-moon windows belong to the US Postal Service building of 1916.
On the corner of Walnut Street and 16th Avenue NE, this Moorish Revival apartment group has been repainted from ochre to white and looks all the better for it.
That’s one way of describing our recent cold snap. (Americans still use Fahrenheit in their weather reports.)

Walking back to my parked car in downtown St. Pete, this row of trees stopped me in my tracks as I spotted a good photo opportunity. Just behind me, a young lady’s voice called out, “You’re not from here, are you?” I explained that I actually was a resident, of ten years’ standing, but it was my accent that wasn’t from here.
My friend herself perhaps had a comparable story to mine, as her accent suggested Latin American roots. I reflected that while I have taken root in my adopted city, but I haven’t wholly uprooted myself from UK and European thoughts and emotions.
