The Lighthouse of Pointe-au-Père was also home to river pilots that rowed out to ships and offered services of piloting the seafaring vessels up river to deposit cargo or passengers ensuring a ships safe passage up the St Lawrence with their specialized local knowledge of winds, currents and depths.
On May 29 1914 well after midnight one such river pilot left the passenger ship the Empress of Ireland rowing into the pointe as she made her way to the ocean heading to Liverpool not knowing the unfortunate events that were to take place roughly an hour or so later.
After sighting the Norwegian steamship SS Storstad at roughly 6 miles apart heading up river a fog bank rolled in obscuring all visibility what happened next was the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canada.
The Storstad crashed into the starboard side of the ocean bound liner opening up the lower decks immediately, due to late hour most passengers were sleeping and the ship went down in 14 minutes listing at such and angle as to make lifeboats almost impossible to launch.
Of the 1477 crew and passengers on board the 168m ship only 465 survived the freezing water as the Storstad commences rescue operations and several boats from Pointe-au-Père raced after receiving the Empress’s distress signals, all told 1012 perished.
I took this on Sept 20th, 2020 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 32mm 1/30 sec f/8 ISO200 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , Luminar and DXO

A view that encapsulate the ever-changing city landscape of Tokyo quite well.
The shot was taken from World Trade Center (now demolished) towards the Rainbow bridge and Odaiba - a big, artificial island in the bay. And the Ferris wheel, in the distance, is the Palette Town Ferris Wheel - which was closed down in 2022 after having been somewhat of a skyline fixture since its inauguration in 1999. At the time of its construction it was the largest Ferris wheel in Japan.

The Pointe-au-Père lighthouse (built in 1909) in Rimouski, Quebec, Canada.
It was de-activated in 1998 and is the second tallest lighthouse in Canada.
This lighthouse is renowned for having received an S.O.S telegraph from the passenger ship, the Empress of Ireland in the early hours of Friday, May 29, 1914.
The Empress of Ireland had just been struck by the SS Storstad, a steam cargo ship built in 1910. Within 14 minutes, the Empress sank. The Storstad fortunately escaped such a fate.
Of the 1,477 passengers and crew abord the Express, 1,012 people died.
Her sinking was and still remains, the worst maritime disaster in Canadian history.

Short stop in this small village and once the territory of the Empress of Ireland, object of the greatest Canadian mariners tragedy on May 29th 1914.
The souls of 1057 passengers remain at this site, at 45 meters depth, after colliding with the SS Storstad, which led it to sink in just 14 minutes.
I had strolled 8 km along the Strip, from my Hostel Cat to Mandalay Bay. Partly because that was about as far as the Strip seemed to stretch, partly because, uh, the hotel is mentioned / heavily featured in Robbie Williams's "Me and my monkey" and he's one of my fave artists. :q
Then I crossed the street and took the bus back. The driver forgot to sell me a ticket. :B

The Goliath House, built about 1260, with its ca. 1573 painting of the fight between David and Goliath, is one of the landmarks of the UNESCO World Heritage City of Regensburg. Along with the Haus Heuport, it is the largest city mansion in Regensburg, and is situated on the northern outside wall of the old Roman fort. Its name comes probably not from the Bible story, but rather from “goliard”. This was the name given to the itinerant theology students of the 12th century, from their patron St Golias. It is assumed that the theology students would have had their quarters near the bishop’s residence in Regensburg, where this house was later built. It was the seat of the wealthy Thundorfer merchant family, coming later into the hands of the Dollingers, the Mallers, and the wealthy Nuremberg merchant family of the Tüchers. The Goliath House is located directly in the historic centre of the Old Town. Coming from the Danube up the Brückstrasse, the impressive painting on the facade of the house tower is directly in front of you. The restaurant “Storstad” (Michelin Guide starred) is located on the top floor of the house, where you can enjoy culinary specialties of the highest quality amid stunning views of St Peter’s cathedral and the landscape of roofs of the Old Town.

The Empress of Ireland was rammed by a freighter at right angles. The career of the RMS Empress of Ireland ended in the early morning hours of May 29th 1914 when it collided with the Norwegian collier the SS Storstad. After being struck on its starboard side by the former icebreaker, the vessel listed on its side and sank below the surface fourteen minutes later. The slant of the museum wing and the faux stacks on its roof hint at the fate of the Empress. The stark steel clad and framed building also suggests a nautical theme.

Adam S. Johnston, Noted Lawyer, Dies - Heart Seizure in Club Fatal to Vancouver's 'Best-Dressed Man - A distinguished Vancouver lawyer died suddenly of a heart attack at his club, Wednesday night. Adam Smith Johnston, 60, of 1101 Nicola, died en route to hospital after an inhalator crew and Dr. Reid Townsley were unable to revive him in the Vancouver Club. Criminal, corporation and constitutional law were his specialty, and he earned a reputation as an astute lawyer and keen debater. One year after he was admitted to the bar, young Johnston established himself as a brilliant criminal lawyer. He defended a man known as "Australian McNamara," charged in connection with the $271,721 robbery at New Westminster's Bank of Montreal. A trio of men broke into the bank at Church and Columbia, at 4 a.m. on a November morning, 1911. They trussed up the Chinese watchman, drilled into the vault and escaped with bags of loot. Johnston spent months preparing his defense and all three accused were acquitted. McNamara, however, was later sentenced to nine years in the penitentiary for theft of a car the same day. As the trio escaped, they shoved an early model car out of the Trapp Garage and tried to start it. A man going to feed his horses saw them and later identified them in court. Friends called him "the best-dressed man in Vancouver." He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Lorraine, who is a lawyer in his firm, and three brothers. RMS Empress of Ireland was an ocean liner that sank near the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River following a collision in thick fog with the Norwegian collier SS Storstad in the early hours of 29 May 1914. Although the ship was equipped with watertight compartments and, in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster two years earlier, carried more than enough lifeboats for all onboard, she foundered in only 14 minutes. Of the 1,477 people on board, 1,012 died, making it the worst peacetime marine disaster in Canadian history.
Empress of Ireland and her sister ship, Empress of Britain, were built by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering at Govan on the Clyde in Scotland. The liners were commissioned by Canadian Pacific Steamships (at that time part of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) conglomerate) for the North Atlantic route between Liverpool and Quebec City. (The transcontinental CPR and its fleet of ocean liners constituted CPR's self-proclaimed "World's Greatest Transportation System".) Empress of Ireland had just begun her 96th voyage when she sank.
The wreck lies in 40 metres (130 ft) of water, making it accessible to advanced divers. Many artifacts from the wreckage have been retrieved, some of which are on display in the Empress of Ireland Pavilion at the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père in Rimouski, Quebec and at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. The Canadian government has passed legislation to protect the site.
Numerous books have been written about the sinking of Empress of Ireland and several films and documentaries have been made.
