The court house in Santa Barbara, California

Spirit of the Ocean Fountain

The Spirit of the Ocean Fountain is a prominent architectural feature near the great arch of the Courthouse. Years of rain, environmental toxins and exposure had taken their toll on the delicate sandstone, and efforts to reinforce and repair the statues with various fillers had resulted in a badly deformed carving.

With a project team of 15 professionals, and almost a million dollars raised by the Santa Barbara Courthouse Legacy Foundation, they located a quarry close to the original, cut large blocks from the sandstone, and transported them to the front lawn of the Courthouse to be publically and painstakingly hand carved using many of the original tools.

Completed by Nick Blantern and his team from Britishstone, this combination of ancient carving methods, combined with modern and computer assisted techniques resulted in an amazing replication of this beloved and historic fountain. Fundraising for this project took nearly 6 years, and would not have been possible without the support of Foundations and private donors in the Santa Barbara community.

Buzzards Roost Trail, Ga

How have I never noticed this Ozarks gem before? Right on the outskirts of town, it sits proudly, displaying windows galore and chimneys fashioned from our native stone.

Not myself personally.... the caption used, is to describe the subject I was focused on :)

I had to take this shell home: it had an assortment of different stones and pebbles permanently wedged in all the curves and swirls.

Island Beach, NJ.

Stones made round by wave action on the rocks at Nash point, there were hundreds of them , all different shapes and sizes , can not think how long it took to smooth them into perfect little polished balls of stone, amazing nature at its best

I arrived at this site today and found that the larger stones that I've sometimes worked with had disappeared, so I concluded that either someone madder, stronger and much bigger than me had taken a fancy to them and took them home for their rockery in their rucksack, or ....

perhaps the landowner had taken them away in his tractor to spoil my fun, because this is after all his sheep's field, but it's really unlikely because the sheep like me and would've argued my case, or ....

as implausible as this may seem, the sheep ate them.

If you study this sheep closely I'm sure that you'll agree that it is a bit 'bulked out' and heavy looking, and just look at the way she's eyeing up that beautiful tasty looking stone at the base of my balance sculpture.

Needless to say, I'll be taking sheep treats with me on future trips, otherwise I'll have no material left to work with.

This little rock is a popular spot for mallards and shovelers to sit and preen and sun themselves. A duck would often push its way on to claim ownership. No fighting. The previous occupier would simply move on.

All the recent rainy and windy weather has shown the mixture of rustic colours and textures on these wet stones and fallen leaves.

This little fellow was sitting here all by itself and I thought it needed some attention so I snapped a few shots :)
