Great Central Railway Winter Gala 2017.

Popped along to Trent lock last night after spotting the steam from the power station was dominating the sky locally and with the night sky being mostly clear, I thought it would be a great time to try some long exposure night time stuff. Despite numb fingers it was an enjoyable hours or so

This old steam locomotive was placed there as memorial to the time when the Xuhui riverside promenade and park (徐汇滨江公园) used to be a busy warehousing and cargo area.

The locomotive was made in 1987 by the Datong Locomotive Works (大同机车工厂). It is a 2-8-2 "JS" (建设, Jianshe = Construction), in the revised "B" specification, build no. 8145.

Of the "JS" in total 1,916 units were made in two production runs (not only at Datong), from 1957-1965 and again 1981 until the final end of production in 1988/9.

The steam locomotive is on display opposite the local museum in Altenbeken, a town that is and has been dominated by the railway. The main sight of Altenbeken is the large limestone viaduct that used to be a key element of east-west railway lines in Germany.

Jacobite Express at Lochailort (Lady of the Braes Roman Catholic Church)

Of course I did shoot the classic viaduct shot (patience...it will be posted) but I got the idea for this shot from the Photography Online YouTubers where they shot the Jacobite Express at both the viaduct and here. If you don't hang around at the viaduct you can get here with 10-15mins to spare to grab a double helping of steam.

You can either shoot it from the roadside or, as I did here, climb up on the hill behind the road and it gives you a glimpse of Loch Ailort you don't get from road level.

Just a quick 'shout out' for the 20fps electronic shutter shooting mode the Canon R5 allows (subject to having 60%+ battery - makes it a lot easier to get a well times shot.

The building was built in 1872 and for many years was known as Lady of the Braes Roman Catholic Church and served the now deserted townships of Ardnish and Polnish. I gather it was featured in the Bill Forsyth film 'Local Hero'. For the last few years it's been a house and I admit to cloning out a Range Rover that to me upset the whole feeling of the image.

I had a blast running my SPC 2-6-0 over the weekend. This loco has an RC system for the throttle, reverser, and whistle.

I was able to achieve a nice, steady, slow run and was quite happy to get a solid run in for an hour with just a few stops for water to be sure things were good in the boiler.

Arriving at Hull Station to take part in Filming the forties TV Drama called the "Blitz".....LMS Stanier Class 5MT 4932, is a preserved British steam locomotive. It is one of 18 surviving members of the Black 5 class which had 842 members constructed by five manufacturers. 44932 is the sole remaining member of the class which was built at the LMS's Horwich Works.

I can remember when, as a kid, I used to put postcards or postal enveloppes on top of a pan full of boiling water, so that I could detach the stamps without damaging them and collect them neatly in albums...

My collection is long gone (I've sold it for a ridiculously low price at a flea market in my teens), but I'm sometimes tempted again to put aside a few nice stamps. Maybe out of nostalgy.

For preparing this shot, I've started the process with a water boiler beforehand. Then for taking the picture I've been using the steam from an air humidifier, placed under the stamps.

This is one of the few shots with roughly the right amount of steam-induced blurriness but still enough crispness in the subject. 😊

This small steam engine was built for one purpose to haul lumber down from logging sites to lower elevation from the mid 1890's to the 1940's. However after WWII conservationists closed down logging operations and many thousands of acres of land were reforserted. This old tank engine is now just a decorative piece to an entrance to a ski resort.

The SS Sicamous was launched in 1914 and for many years connected rail lines and towns on Okanagan Lake. Built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, the vessel operated until 1937 and is currently beached as a part of a heritage shipyard operated by the S.S. Sicamous Restoration Society in Penticton. The ship is 200 feet long (61 metres) and was the largest ship plying the waters of Okanagan lake. The ship had five decks when built and in 1935 two of the decks were removed, turning the ship to mainly a cargo carrier.
