Another photo of this placid reservoir in the desert with mountains rising in the distance. Located about 8 miles north of Vernal (Utah), the Steinaker Reservoir has a diversion dam on Ashley Creek and this area is also designated as a State Park. The water supply is used for irrigation in nearby Ashley Valley.

A dramatic landscape in spectacular light, isn't that what we landscape photographers are yearning for when we go out or planning a trip? It does not always happen, in fact, a lot of times one or more ingredients are missing and we have to make due with what we are presented with.
But sometimes a little patience will pay off. We arrived at Goosenecks Statepark about two hours before sunset and it didn't look good. Heavy rain clouds had obscured the sun, and the landscape, while spectacular in form and shape, looked gray and drab.
We were not the only ones there, visitors kept coming, taking selfies in all imaginable ways and leaving looking somewhat disappointed. But I noticed that the clouds were moving away and a gap was opening up on the horizon. And sure enough, the sun started to peek out from under the clouds and spread its magic while we watched the storm recede into the distance.
This sandstone natural bridge is the largest in the state. The natural rock shelter underneath the arch was excavated by archeologists in 1957. Their findings showed that people they called Paleo-Indians lived in the shelter 12,000 years ago and apparently hunted megafauna like mastodons and woolly mammoths in the shadow of the retreating glaciers. (The park is about 10 miles west of Hwy. 12 on County Highway C in Sauk County.)

I can't remember which state park this was. This was taken during a side trip I did exploring upstate NY. Its a surprising mix of natural beauty, rundown old towns and quaint little places.

While not a national park nor a National Recreational Area like Lake Mead, don't let its status of a State Park make you think that it's of a sub-par quality. Not at all! And I think it's named appropriately - The ... #etbtsy
In my humble opinion, there is no better way to unwind after a busy day than photographing a lake in a wilderness setting in the evening. I had driven to the backside of Argyle Lake State Park in Colchester, Illinois just before sunset and then hiked down to a primite campsite--and from there down to the shoreline. There was no one else around, except for one boat that passed by sometime later on the other side. Fish were jumping and shadows began to grow across the lake as the setting suns rays hit the shoreline where I was standing. A perfect evening!
From this vantage point, it looks like the lake ends here. In reality, it wraps around to the right and continues quite a ways. I had hoped to see more color in the leaves along the shoreline at this time of the year. However, most of the trees are various species of oaks, whose leaves tend to turn brown instead of red, orange or yellow. We had visiting this state park looking for Florida Scrub Jays but we didn't have much luck and a typical tropical storm rolled in. Jonathan Dickinson State Park
I think I hit the jackpot when I saw this little baby Barred Owl. Thank you to two very nice women who pointed him out to me.

An old threshing machine still stands in good shape at Cottonwood Canyon State Park. Cottonwood is a former cattle ranch that was sold to Oregon State Parks several years ago when owners — the Murtha family — decided that the place should be shared with the general public.

Starvation Creek is a small Rest Stop / Park near Hood River, Oregon in the Columbia River Gorge.
I found the park, and the creek, by accident while hunting waterfalls and was shocked at how photogenic the creek is. I highly recommend visiting if you are in the Hood River, Oregon area.
This section of creek is right below Starvation Creek Falls.

Montgomery Bell State Park - the lake early on an unusual morning for Middle Tennessee; a week and a half below freezing. The early morning stillness was different than that which comes with the hush of snow. The ice seems to amplify, both noise and cold.
Roxborough State Park just south of Denver offers an outdoor experience like no other. Great hiking trails and sublime beauty year round.
