Staple Island : petite île rocheuse, ou skerry, qui fait partie du groupe extérieur des îles Farne dans le Northumberland, en Angleterre/Staple Island: a small rocky island, or skerry, that is one of the Outer Group of the Farne Islands in Northumberland, England.
After leaving Burrator on Thursday I head up to Great Staple Tor for sunset. The sky was looking great and there was some nice late afternoon light but in the end, the sun dipped below some low cloud and sunset was a bust.
I did manage to get a few shots while I was up there though so I'll be posting some of those over the week.
We visited for the first time a few weeks ago on a circular hike taking in Roos Tor and White Tor as well. It was one of those days which promised sunshine and decent temperatures but Dartmoor does have its own micro-climate and arriving at the car park we were greeted by storm-like gusts. Of course we did not pack anything for colder or windy weather so the first half of the walk I tried to convince the rest of the family that it will get better at some point - thankfully it eventually did and while we could not really enjoy the magnificent rock formations of Great Staple Tor for very long (that was still part of the windy and chilly parts of the walk), the rest of the walk provided some fabulous locations and memories!

Last one from my trip up to Great Staple Tor on Dartmoor last Sunday evening.
This was taken just as I was getting ready to pack up for the evening, I saw the sun hitting the horizon and fired off one more shot with the Western stack of the tor as my focal point.

First official shot of 2019 is one from a new year's day trip up to Great Staple Tor on Dartmoor.
I'd originally wanted to head up in the morning but there was thick low cloud all over the moors so I left it until the afternoon when luckily, the cloud cleared a bit and gave some gorgeous side light on the tor. Unfortunately, the sunset I was hoping for never happened but I still think this photo gives off enough drama.
I'm doing a year long feature for Dartmoor Magazine which is due out in 2020, and I've picked this tor as my favourite tor. So, I couldn't think of a better way to kick off the year than with a visit up to Dartmoor to start my project.

A beautiful BNSF 9294 leads a trio of typical, mid-2000s northern plains coal power west around the bend near Hawley, MN.
Back then, green SD60Ms were the main target whenever I headed out, and this one was a real treat because it was unexpected. I always enjoyed my excursions to the Staples Sub. It was a bit of a drive from my house, but totally worth it.
Great Staple Tor
Another shot from a morning at Great Staple Tor on Dartmoor a few weeks ago.
I was hoping for a bit more high cloud in the sky to give off those lovely pink colours, but as the weather report lied to me we ended up with just a few bits hanging around.
I get a lot of people asking me who placed the rocks like this, and without boring everyone with a science lesson, I've found a great fact sheet with the whole process of how they were formed. You can find it here...

Yesterday evening myself and my friend Darren headed up to Great Staple Tor on Dartmoor for sunset.
Unfortunately there was no cloud in the sky at all apart from a band of low level cloud on the horizon so the sunset wasn't anything to shout about. It was a lovely evening though and we spent a good couple of hours up there just admiring the view.
For me, Great Staple Tor is one of the most photogenic and dramatic tors on Dartmoor, it's two pillars make excellent foreground and background interest, and it makes an ideal location for sunrises and sunsets.

Having a play with some older images today, this is another one from my trip up to Great Staple Tor on Dartmoor when we had a bit of snow.
This winter has been very disappointing for me so far, I've been hoping for more snow up on Dartmoor so I can get some photos for next winter's edition of Dartmoor Magazine, which I've been asked to be a featured photographer for. So far all we've had this year is high winds, grey skies and rain. I missed the best of the snow as I was down in Cornwall so haven't really had a chance to get out. Fingers crossed Jack Frost will eventually turn up in February and give us a couple of weeks of nice cold winter weather.
Anyway, I'll stop moaning about our climate, Here's another view from the tor with a slightly different composition than the last couple of shots I posted.
A year round staple in my pantry is cranberry sauce; made with fresh berries (in season soon!), grated ginger, orange juice, cinnamon and half the recommended amount of sugar.
This tangy sauce compliments poultry like none other. :-)

This was such a fun discovery. I was leaving an open house--beautiful 3 bedroom loft with a 48' long living room at 335 Greenwich Street. (For sale for $4,950,000, which I'm happy to show if anyone is interested . . . ) Turned the corner onto Jay Street and re-discovered Staple Street.
The building on the left is a single family townhouse formerly owned by the fashion designer Zoran Ladicovbic. He bought the skybridge and the apartment on the 3rd floor in the building on the right for his studio. 9 Jay Street is a 6,300 sq.ft., 25' wide townhouse with 11' ceilings and apartment 3 A/B in 67 Hudson on the right is 1,900 sq.ft. Both were on the market for $30 million a couple of years ago. The properties did not sell at the time and I have not followed to see if they were sold privately or if Ladicovbic still owns them.
