Advancing women’s empowerment contributes to national stability, says DSRSG Walpole at International Women’s Day celebration

Baghdad, 07 March 2019 – International Women’s Day was celebrated today at an event organized by the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women at the Council of Ministers.

The event, which was supported by UN Women and the International Medical Corps, was attended by senior Iraqi government officials, including the two Deputy Speakers of the Council of Representatives, human rights activists, civil society representatives, the international community and many others.

Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) Alice Walpole addressed the meeting, along with Dr. Mahdi Al-Allaq, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, who represented the Prime Minister; Dr. Thikra Alwash, Mayor of Baghdad and Chair of the Standing Committee on the Advancement of Women; UN Women’s Representative, Ms. Dina Zorba and UNFPA Representative, Dr. Oluremi Sogunro; as well as the Director-General of the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women, Dr. Ibtisam Aziz.

In her remarks, DSRSG Walpole welcomed the upcoming discussions in Parliament on updating the Anti-Domestic Violence Law. “We need to acknowledge that domestic violence diminishes and shames all of society; it is a threat not just to women but to society itself,” she emphasised.

Reflecting on the challenges facing displaced women across Iraq, DSRSG Walpole noted that “They continue to suffer the brutal consequences of the recent conflict”.

“Female-headed households should be prioritised in accessing public services,” she said, and called on the Ministries of Defence and Interior, and the National Operations Command, to “to ensure that secure clearance mechanisms are coordinated among security actors to minimize re-screening of individuals already screened; and to consider removing security clearance requirements for civilians who have not been charged with a criminal or terrorism-related offence, so they do not face obstacles in accessing public services, including civil registries and courts”.

DSRSG Walpole also noted the high unemployment rate amongst young women, which is double that of men. She called on the government to “offer small business grants to female entrepreneurs to help them into the business arena, in particular to women returnees in the liberated areas, and those heading households”.

“Advancing women’s economic empowerment in this way will contribute to the government’s efforts to achieve national stability,” she noted.

You are looking at the back side of the trifold display board.

Each Trifold Display Board Stability Support System consists of a 5-gal. bucket of styrofoam pieces and sand surrounding a short PVC pipe. A long PVC pipe fits into the short one, and two blue Velcro straps are used to hold that pipe to the back of the center section of the trifold display board. The longer pipe is removable, so a lid can be put on the 5-gal. bucket for transportation. Each bucket of sand and styrofoam weighs about 10 pounds.

The purpose of this system is to add additional stability to the trifold display board for outdoor exhibits where there may be mild or gusty winds.

As Singapore becomes a developed country, she has attained both stability and sustainability. Despite the Government’s tireless efforts to serve the people and solve their problems, the living cost remains relatively high especially in the areas of public housing, transportation and food prices. As such many lower income groups in Singapore face greater difficulty in coping with the high standard of living. These six photographs, created based on the voices of the people, reveal their sorrow as they make do with just the basic necessities that ensure their survival in Singapore. Hopefully the current situation would be further improved and less people would be victims of the rising living cost.

On July 16, IRD, CSIS, and AECOM brought together colleagues in the diplomatic, donor, implementing partner, and beneficiary communities for a day-long discussion of how the United States uses civilian capacity to respond to foreign crises–and the importance of this capacity in stabilizing failed or fragile states.

"Mass wasting" is the geologic term for all forms of landslides - rapid or slow. Many roadcuts and riverbanks are prone to small- and moderate-sized collapse events of rocks & soil. Especially vulnerable sites are often modified using various slope stability measures.

A commonly-used approach to erosion control is the dumping of boulders, but I have never before (or since) seen the use of old junk cars. These trashed vehicles have been deliberately placed along the lower banks of the Tuckasegee River in North Carolina to slow erosion during high-flow events. The overlying slope leads to the edge of a well-used road.

Locality: southern bank of the Tuckasegee River at the Route 19/Governor's Island Road bridge, east of the town of Bryson City, Swain County, southwestern North Carolina, USA (35° 25' 53.06" North latitude, 82° 24' 52.95" West longitude)

Three decades later, a further battery - the New Battery - was built higher up on the headland because of concerns about the stability of the cliffs at Old Battery and also to provide the space needed for newer, larger guns. Three emplacements were built at a cost of £9,821, the contractor being a Mr Hill of Bungworth, Gosport, Hampshire. It was not until five years later, in 1900, that two 9.2 inch Mark IX breech-loading guns were emplaced (the third was added in 1904). Also in circa 1900 magazines, stores and other accommodation (including an artillery store, guardhouse, canteen and cookhouse) were added to the rear of the guns (all were demolished in the 1950s). Between 1900 and 1902 a battery command post was built higher up the hill with clear views of the Solent's western approaches. It continued as the Battery Commander's post until after the Second World War and was then modified during the 1950s and used as a transformer, sub-station and radio frequency laboratory. It is now (2015) an electricity sub-station.

The battery saw a range of armament in the early years of the C20 (see Cocroft, 2007, 5 for more details) with, just prior to the First World War, the emplacements adapted for VB (‘Vavasseur Barbette’) mountings which allowed the gun to recoil down a ramp. Both batteries were manned during the First World War and immediately afterwards the site was put on a care and maintenance footing until reactivated for use by the Territorial Army in 1926.

SECOND WORLD WAR ACTIVITY During the Second World War both batteries were manned by the 530 (Princess Beatrice’s) Coast Artillery Regiment. One of the main tasks for the site was the protection of the entrance to the Solent – and thus protection of the naval base at Portsmouth – from enemy attack. Second World War armament at New Battery was initially two 9.2 inch Mark X guns on VB mounts, which were later upgraded. Lewis machine guns and Bofors guns provided anti-aircraft defence, a Mark IIB rangefinder was added at the eastern end of the battery. Given how exposed the site was, steel protective covers were placed above the gun emplacements to offer some protection from hostile aircraft.

The site was mothballed at the end of the war with the Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment retaining an interest in the site

HIGH DOWN TEST SITE The 1950s saw the beginning of the Cold War and a convincing nuclear deterrent, in the form of a missile that had sufficient range to threaten Moscow and other Soviet urban populations, was therefore considered necessary.

Accordingly, in 1954, the Air Ministry commissioned a missile with a range of around 1,500 miles which would later be named 'Blue Streak'. This was to be Britain's only Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile and the most ambitious of its post-war missile programmes. Two of the crucial design challenges were the shape of the re-entry head and the type of material that might be used for the fabrication of its outer shield... EH Listing

When I took this photo, I didn't know much about the anatomy of a fly. I was particularly intrigued by the yellow bit sticking out of the side of the fly. I found that this is an Haltere.

Halteres are amazing! They are actually little wings that vibrate as the normal wings vibrate. They use the same principles as a gyroscope to provide stability to the fly. These Halteres also help the fly sense movement, much like the gyroscopes in the flight instruments of an airplane. At the base of a Haltere, the fly has a sensory organ that allows them to feel movement from the oscillating gyroscope.

These Halteres provide balance and guidance information. Without these, flies would not be able perform the spectacular aerobatics that we see every day.

The Royal Victoria Dock Bridge

Designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands

Completed 1998

This is a footbridge across the Royal Victoria Dock, although the design does allow for the option of a 40-person gondola to operate underneath as well - making this a true transporter bridge.

The structure has six masts which are between 10-30m high; the bridge has a clearance of 15m to allow tall-masted ships to pass underneath.

The Victoria Dock opened in 1855 (the 'Royal' was granted in 1880). This was the first dock designed to accommodate steam ships, the first with rail links to the national rail network and the first to use hydraulic machinery.

By 1860, the shipping was estimated to total 850,000 tonnes, larger than any of the other London ports. Although badly damaged throughout the Second World War, the Royal Victoria Docks were restored and returned to its former strength. The decline came in the 1960s with containerisation and larger ships shifting traffic to Tilbury. The docks closed in 1980.
