There's nothing like rich volcanic soil for growing good veges, no exception these potatoes ("spuds" in local lingo) near Ohakune in the central north island of New Zealand. The mountain is Mt Ruapehu (2797m), an active volcano in the Tongariro National Park. Aside from being famous as Mordor in the Lord of the Rings films, the mountain is popular with locals and tourists alike for skiing, hiking and sightseeing (many visiting Lord of the Rings filming locations!).
Recently I acquired an awesome little Wood Turtle for Christmas who I named Spud! He's a pretty cool guy so I decided to create a Lego version of him.
Claytonia virginica, commonly known as Virginia springbeauty or fairy spuds, among other names, is an early Spring flowering perennial plant native to Eastern North America. It is noted for its abundance throughout many parts of its range, especially in forests.
The Eastbound Spud local for Quincy and beyond climbs up out of Trinidad Loop with a pair of Geeps for power.
This is Spud who is three months old. I met him with his owner doing some training when out in the Forest on Saturday. He was walking Spud near the ponies, on his lead, trying to de-sensitise him from getting excited when he comes across any of the Forest animals (what a good owner). He asked if I would help with approaching Spud and petting him after his owner had told him to sit. He wanted Spud not to jump up at people who approached him. The first couple of tries had Spud jumping up all over me - lol, but after only a few attempts he began to calm down until eventually, whenever I approached he would sit patiently and wait for him to pet him.. I really enjoyed meeting Spud and his owner and only wish that all owners took so much trouble.

Happy Smile on Saturday!
With two SD40Ns, an SD70ACe, and a healthy cut of grain, UP YSPBN rolls off the Robert Street lift bridge as it passes Union Depot on its way to East Minneapolis.
Since losing Chippy it's taken a long long time for me to start enjoying my dog photography again without feeling disloyal to him, I'm there now and these two dogs we have now deserve nothing less than what Chip had, the dog lovers amongst you will understand.
As I upload this on 12/09/2022, I remember this day 5 years ago.
It was a historic moment, as two unusual visitors occupied St Paul Union Depot's platform.
It was a better time for the commuter, in fact, this was the first public trip to SPUD from Big Lake, a short-lived annual tradition called "Northstar's Holiday Special". When the pandemic hit, Northstar suffered.
Opposite the commuter is the fan-favorite "North Pole Express" led by Milwaukee Road 261. The NPE was in its 4th year (started in 2014) and has continued to this day.
Prior to Northstar and the 261 departing for their respective destinations, a photo shoot was organized by Steve Glischinski & Bob Ball. Several shots were taken of Northstar's 6-car train at the depot.
The last shot of the night was a side-by-side of the two trains on the platform. This will probably forever be a favorite memory of mine as a rail fan, still learning the ins and outs of night shoots.
CB&Q 957 leads two PC Motors and a sister GP30 at St, Paul MN past the SPUD facilities where some GN passenger power is awaiting their next runs. I believe this from the Kellogg overpass. Pretty amazing what used to be here 50 plus years ago. Bill Riebe Photo Sept 68.
Following a fresh snowfall, a late running Amtrak 8 waits as the Friends of the 261 North Pole Express powered by E9 32A passes by en route to the "North Pole" at St. Paul Union Depot. Above the E9 are tents for the annual European Christmas Market, and taking place inside is the annual Union Depot Bake Sale. SPUD is busy at this time of year!
The old building above the market with the curved entryway is the original headquarters of the Great Northern Railway, while the large building with the microwave tower was the joint GN/Northern Pacific headquarters, later home to Burlington Northern before they fled to Fort Worth.
At this time of year, trucks loaded with Idaho potatoes arrive almost every minute during the day, and are soon unloaded and dumped on spuds mountains.
TLC is not evident. :-)

Had a really hard time deciding on a subject this week. Luckily my wife came to the rescue and noted that we had some old potatoes that needed to be thrown away.
HMM everyone!

Poor Spud's been in lockdown for so long, so when the restrictions were eased that was it ....
He was really lacking a 'Chocolate Hit', so at the first opportunity .... he had a Picnic literally he scoffed a whole Cadbury Picnic bar!!! ....
Spud said afterwards ....
"Wow' now I feel normal again".
My brain seemed to go to Mash.
Inside .... 'day in' .... 'day out'.
Now I'm a Chip off the old block again "Ha ha."
He really missed that lovely milk chocolate deliciousness over the last few months of the Covid-19 lockdown.
Now I'm "Happy Spud"
No more Chips for him now! gone all the Mash and the rotten times ....
It's chocolate all the way .... Mmm yummy .... sweetness in my tummy.
Oh yes 👍👍👍
Love & Peace. 💟
Just a little fun to cheer me up, and possibly you too. 😷
No Spud's or Potatoes were hurt, or harmed during the
making of this image. 😹😂

Kokoni means small breed in Greek and this is a dog I often see on Instagram - his name is Spud. He's a rescue dog that belongs to one of the artists I follow there.
