Found on an overturned log in mixed woodland. These springtails are springless.

This tiny Sminthurinus sp. springtail was walking on a carpet of mold. This one was under half a milimeter, probably the smallest springtail I've found so far.
The colour pattern of this entomobryidae looks like Entomobrya nivalis. - Length : 1.5mm - Nikon D90 + Tamron 90mm macro f:2.8 + 68mm macro tubes - SB 900 strobe

Yay, the springtails are out! =) This one is particularly hairy. It also appears to have an aberrant antenna.
So, I found this on my pond the other day and thought it looked quite cool. I found a whole stack more today in the moss near the pond but couldn't get any decent photos. I can say though that they're about a third of the size of S. aureus that was there too and they have a red eye patch and I know nothing else.
Edit. There seems to be a whole range of colours across S. pumilis I've been watching, from this yellowy pink to full on orangey red with distinct markings. All have the strongly red eye patch and a kind of see-through shiny glow under a lens.

Spotted some springtails floating in a pot of water so I sieved them out through an old pan scrubber I have in the garden for cleaning duties.

In adult Orchesella both the 1st and 2nd antennal segment are subdivided in a short basal subsegment and a longer apical subsegment. There is no indication of such subdivision, so it must be one of the first instars.

No springtails here at the moment. It has been unusually dry. Finally it´s raining, so perhaps soon there will be some.

Well, wasn't today just the most gorgeous spring day? After a long abscence from macrophotography, I finally got my self into gear.
Not sure on the ID of this springtail as I am some-what un-familiar with them, although I am sure a contact or two might be able to help. These little guys are really tiny, no more than 1-2mm
Since upgrading body to the 7D, these are the first macro shots I've taken and I'm glad to say I like how the body performs with my macro-rig, even though my technique is a little rusty
This is the first Symphypleona photo I’ve gotten in which the body segments are so clearly visible! I’ve taken my $23 clip lens to the limit!
I still can't believe that such a distinctive Sminthurides form has never been recorded before. It must be somewhere. And I know I'm biased, as it lives on my pond but I do find it incredibly beautiful to look at!
Also, a question for Frans. In quite a few photos, the white stripe becomes opalescent and reflects pinks, blues and purples. Would there be any scales or is it just a bi-product of the flash?
