Excerpt from www.oala.ca/ground_articles/speaking-up-and-out/:

Currently, the only city in Ontario with an active Speakers’ Corner known to this author is Kitchener, which recently installed one at the corner of King and Frederick streets. While this space was a Speakers’ Corner prior to redevelopment, its presence was fairly discreet—a bench, some shrubs, and a sign saying “Speakers’ Corner.”

Artist Allan MacKay designed the new Speakers’ Corner in Kitchener.

Allan MacKay, an artist now based in Banff, Alberta, created the latest Speakers’ Corner in Kitchener in 2009 as part of the King Street streetscape renewal led by IBI Group. The piece is comprised of two granite walls that identify the space with repeating text PUBLICSPEAKINGPUBLICSPEAKINGPUBLICSPEAKING.

Central to the space is a mirror-polished stainless steel column, which reflects an anamorphic image rendered in porcelain tile around its base. The image, a panoramic photograph of the space taken by MacKay prior to redevelopment, reflects on the stainless steel and reconstructs itself, wrapping 360 degrees around the column. The original Speakers’ Corner sign can be seen in that image.

Along with the technical challenge of constructing a perfectly mirrored cylinder, MacKay received help with the technical challenge of the image projection from mathematician Dr. Jim Hunt. MacKay says, “I was interested in the experience of people finding the illusion, finding that little bit of magic that happens if you work mathematics in a certain way.”

While mathematics was important to the conceptualization, the Speakers’ Corner feature was close to MacKay’s heart. “I was doing a lot of speaking out about the [federal] government at that particular point in time, and so in a sense my own politics of the notion of public voice became very interesting, and I thought, well, it would be good to revitalize and reinvest this space with the aspect of being a Speakers’ Corner.”

If only folks would remember to raise the volume when speaking!

We all have difficulty, especially with added layers of plastic. . . . but especially those of us who are hearing-impaired! Please work a little harder at successful communication, as we do every day. Thank you!

Please remember:

The burden to be understood is on the speaker!

A couple of hundred senior citizens showed up in Vero Beach, Florida on August 16, 2025 to participate in the "Fight the Trump Takeover" event, a nationwide mobilization effort that comes on the heels of a showdown in Texas over electoral maps. They gathered in temperatures that exceeded 90°F (32° C) to speak up and be heard. If they can brave the hot Florida sun in August then you can speak up too. If you're not speaking up in your community then you are allowing this to happen. This event was also attended by members of the Vets Against Trump organization.1232

This image was created using artificial intelligence, not to depict an ideal angel, but to give shape to a profoundly human state of mind: contempt for humanity itself, especially for those who hold power and decide over life and death with cold indifference.

The man standing on the cloud, dressed in white, does not embody purity or divine grace. He represents the personification of an extreme thought: “If I were an Angel, I’d spit on your heads from above.”

A spit that is not only anger, but a gesture of rejection toward those who rule as if people were mere numbers, toward those who call victims “collateral damage” while justifying every atrocity as necessary.

This work also speaks to the silent masses who accept this logic as normal, who have absorbed the mentality of power and no longer believe they have the strength to fight back.

It is a visual cry against resignation, against the belief that there is no alternative, against violence disguised as order.

Artificial intelligence made it possible to create an image that could never exist in reality — but what it represents is painfully real.

no conforto do meu lar, sem nenhuma ameaça de bomba, assisto pela tv famílias inteiras correndo em busca de paz, ou apenas correndo, sabe deus pra onde.

cidades inteiras desertas, abandonadas, tudo deixado pra trás.
