Since the Plymouth Prowler first debuted back in 1996, I have always thought that this was a versatile platform perfect for exploration in multiple dimensions.

 

Around eight years ago I designed a V8, vintage plane themed HEMI Howler, replacing the stock V6 with one of Chryslers HEMI V8 engines. A not unexpected conversion.

 

The Prowler platform though is thoroughly modern, using a spaceframe construction and unstressed panels, meaning it can be turned into almost anything. That most customers didn't bother was a giant disappointment.

 

The Lego model here, designed to #mocaroundgang #mocaround56 for #hearserod models provided an just such an opportunity. Nearly all the change is via a long tapered rear overhang, suitable for carrying long thin boxes. And, unlike the standard roadster model, the inclusion of a roof smoothes things out.

 

The rear load door is all glass - a nod to the futuristic hotrod concepts of the late 1960s, and the grille, wheel trims and interior are finished in blood-red.

Shark-like air intakes and 6.3 pointing to the 6.3 litre V8 front-mid engine are the core elements of the SLS AMG side view.

Powered by a US built V2 engine with an output of 100bhp from engine specialists S + S makers of Harley Davidson engines.

The whole assembly save the oil tank needed for its dry sump lubrication sits ahead of the double wishbone front suspension and feeds power rearward through a Mazda MX5 transmission to a fat, belt-driven rear tyre whose width probably exceeds that of both front tyres combined. The chassis is a spaceframe Morgan design manufactured in Hinkley, Leicestershire while the body is aluminium and produced by Premier Sheet Metal in Coventry. With paint and final assembly at Morgan in Malvern

Designed for the Matra Group in cooperation with the automaker Simca and design by Greek designer Antonis Volanis.and marketed as the Matra-Simca Baghera until its final year when it was re-badged Talbot-Matra Bagheera after Chrysler Europe's demise and subsequent takeover by PSA.

Initially powered by a mid-mounted 1300cc Simca unit, it was upgraded from 1977 with the Simca 1442cc engine.

The Baghera was named after the Panther from Rudyard kiplings - The Jungle Book and was created largely from stock Simca components, including the engines, gearbox and suspension elements, but unlike the Simca, cars were constructed on a tubular spaceframe, clad with glass fibre bodywork and all round independant suspension with torsion bars.

There was only one row of seats, but it featured an unusual combination of three abreast. The Bagheera remains one of the few three-passenger sports cars.

In 1976, the Bagheera underwent a major restyling, with basically only the rear hatch unchanged (Bagheera type II). Another change took place in 1978, when the dashboard was replaced again, and in 1979 the Bagheera was given conventional door handles in lieu of the previous "hidden" ones (Bagheera type III). Since PSA took control of Simca in the previous year

This is a photograph that I took at Waterway corner during practice for the British Grand Prix at Aintree in July 1962. It’s Masten Gregory in a Lotus 24 Climax, entered by the UDT Laystall Racing Team. He qualified in fourteenth place on the grid and ended the race in seventh position, one lap behind the winner. The Lotus 24 was powered by the same 1,496cc Coventry Climax FWMV engine as the Lotus 25, but had a conventional spaceframe chassis instead of the Lotus 25's monocoque chassis.

The Trichechus is synonymous with the IBN. Many craft still operating today are well over a century old, and some early spaceframes are approaching a century and a half in service.

 

During the early formation of the IBN, fleets of Trichechus boats were instrumental in allowing crews to patrol the Belt and enforce its emerging laws. Rugged, modular, and easily refitted, the platform quickly became the workhorse of frontier security operations.

 

While newer and more sophisticated spacecraft have since entered service, the Trichechus continues to be widely used by specialist units such as the SBS. Crews favour the platform for its reliability and adaptability, often echoing the old engineering maxim:

 

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

 

Multi-role, robust, and dependable, the Trichechus is widely regarded as one of the most successful military utility spacecraft ever produced. Originally designed by Bombardier AstroSystems, the craft’s near-perfect balance of durability, modularity, and maintainability has ensured its longevity across multiple generations of upgrades.

 

The defining feature of the design is its modular mission nose bay, which allows a wide range of interchangeable packages to be installed depending on operational requirements. These modules may include:

•radar and targeting suites

•weapons systems

•maintenance and repair manipulators

•autonomous drone ports

•sensor and survey packages

•cargo racks or salvage equipment

 

The raised cockpit provides excellent visibility for manual docking and close-quarters manoeuvring — a capability still highly valued in environments where line-of-sight piloting remains preferable to automated docking systems.

 

The primary crew compartment can accommodate up to eight personnel in transport configuration, though most patrol missions operate with smaller crews. Internal volume is sufficient for additional cargo or mission equipment depending on configuration.

 

At the rear of the craft, a dual-purpose airlock door functions both as a loading ramp when docked in a station hangar and as an extendable soft-docking tube for direct station interface. However, in most SBS operations teams deploy directly via EVA while the Trichechus remains nearby to provide overwatch and security.

 

Additional dorsal rack assemblies allow further mission modules to be mounted atop the hull.

 

Magnetic docking skids integrated into the landing structure allow the craft to secure itself directly to station hulls, ferous asteroid surfaces, or external truss structures, making it well suited to the improvised environments common throughout the Belt.

 

An EVA umbilical and service pack is typically carried in the rear cargo basket for extended external operations.

 

While many Trichechus craft retain their original spaceframes, nearly all operational examples have undergone extensive modernization.

 

Current Block VI refits commonly include:

•upgraded dual fusion-torch drives with triple-nozzle main engines

•modern cold-gas RCS assemblies for fine manoeuvring

•updated avionics and flight control systems

•integrated radar, lidar, and multi-spectral targeting packages

•modernized data bus architecture for modular mission equipment

 

These upgrades allow the century-old spaceframe to remain fully competitive with much newer designs.

 

Kearey’s Patrol Trichechus - "Buttercup"

 

Buttercup is configured in a typical SBS patrol configuration. The nose bay houses an integrated targeting and navigation suite combining radar, lidar, and a 12 mm rotary cannon turret for close-range interdiction. A modular dorsal rack carries a six-tube missile pack, consisting of five OG-88 "Brine" cluster interceptors and a single SX-3 "Silvercap" EMP soft-kill missile intended for disabling hostile electronics or drone swarms. The launcher interfaces with the vessel’s fire control suite via an external data bus linking the missile rack with the opposing targetting sensor package.

 

This configuration allows her to perform escort, interception, and electronic suppression roles while maintaining her primary function as a patrol and transport craft.

 

Like many long-serving patrol boats, Buttercup carries an unofficial crew mascot - Teddy Boatswain. Teddy has been happily strapped to the rear cargo basket for hundreds of missions ever since Dave stumbled into a briefing with no pants and Teddy tucked under his arm. (...the crew stopped asking questions a long time ago...) Teddy has been bringing them luck ever since.

The Sapphire class shuttlecraft that would become so well-known across the galaxy began its life in 2511, when the Martian contracting branch of the Heorot Shipbuilding Corporation prototyped the X-511 Exo-Atmospheric Insertion Vehicle at Tigris Military Shipyard V. Conceived in response to the need for smaller and more flexible rapid insertion vehicles felt acutely by the ICNC during the Pirate War, the X-511 was of immediate interest to the military. The Naval Ordnance Board requested further prototyping, and the X-511 was stress-tested atmospherically on Mars, Europa, Venus, and later, the brown dwarf Indi B. In 2515, the Ordnance Board requested testing of a set of interchangeable propulsion packages and weapon systems for the X-511 spaceframe. In early 2517, the X-511-8 prototype was formally adopted by the ICNC as the EA-2 Sapphire-class Mk. I Exo-Atmospheric Shuttle. Based on equipment package fitted, the Sapphire-class could be configured as a Mk. I-A Insertion Shuttle, Mk. I-B Range Assault Shuttle, or Mk.I-C Support Shuttle.

Lister-Bell currently have two versions of their Lancia Stratos based kit which can be produced in all body variations from Stradalle to Group 4.

The STR a torsionally rigid CAD designed spaceframe chassis with full roll cage to RAC blue book specification and can be powered by V6 or V8 engines

The STRM features an evolution of the STRs chassis developed to accept the complete rear subframe assembly from the Ferrari Mondial. and is designed to accept the 3.0 or 3.2 litre Ferrari V8 from the phase 1 or phase 2 Mondial

The wide, flat spaceframe of the Hawk class, which reflected a departure from Federation War-era tall and narrow ships, allowed for a more spacious interior compared to earlier corvettes and frigates. The commanding officer, usually a Lieutenant Commander, was afforded a cramped cabin on the port side, fore of the medical bay, and the crew got slightly more spacious accommodation on the starboard, with most of that side of the ship functioning as bunk and recreational room. A central corridor connected these spaces to the large aft engineering section, wherein the operation of the single Hienlem-Heldfield R40 Cold Fusion Reactor could be monitored, and to the bridge in the forward 'nose.' The angled spaces at the aft of the ship on each side were used for cargo storage and crew amenities.

 

[Yes, the Hawk class was heavily inspired by - virtually modeled on - the Ebon Hawk from Knights of the Old Republic. Thus, the name. The model measures 54 studs long and 42 studs wide.]

* The original intention of the JPS was not just to manufacture 100 for the UK but also 100 apiece in the “rest of the world” or USA markets that provided up to a third of total volumes when the Lotus export effort was “on track”. One Lotus employee did provide the JPS total and information is that 147 were probably made: 94 for Britain; 10 for California; 16 for the other 49 US States and 27 for the “rest of the world”.

- Colin Chapman (owner and founder of Lotus Cars) had a long-term sponsorship relationship with the John Players Special cigarette company. The relationship worked so well that "Team Lotus" was the most successful team in Formula one racing for its time.

- The Commemorative Edition Esprits Series was a special edition to commemorate Lotus' victory in the 1978 F1 World Championship.

- Model “Type 79” referred tot he wnning Lotus 79 John Player Mark IV Formula 1 car, raced by Mario Andretti.

- The body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro from Italdesign Giugiaro S.p.A in Moncalieri - Italy.

- Lotus never developed or built a convertible Esprit, custom manufacturers stepped in to fill this market.

- The 907 aluminium-block 4-valve engine has been used in Jensen-Healeys, nicknamed "The Torqueless Wonder" for its lack of bottom end but good high end horsepower.

I took this photograph at the Donington Park Museum in October 1989 showing the the car that brought BRM its only World Drivers' and Constructors' Championships. It's the 1962 BRM P578 which Graham Hill drove in the 1962 and 1963 seasons, although the 'stack-pipe' exhaust system was quickly revised as the pipes had a tendency to drop off quite frequently. The Great Racing Cars of the Donington Collection says this about the car:

Sir Alfred Owen made it clear to BRM’s personnel that 1962 was to be their make-or-break season. They had won their first, and so far only, Grand Prix victory at Zandvoort in 1959, and now the expensive new 1½ litre V8 engine had to prove itself successful. It did, and Graham Hill won his first Grand Prix at Zandvoort, went on to win again in the German, Italian and South African rounds, and ended the season as World Champion Driver. British Racing Motors won the World Constructors’ Championship; honour was satisfied, and the concern survived. BRM’s prototype P56 V8-engined car appeared in practice for the 1961 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where it impressed as one of the sleekest and smallest Formula 1 cars of its time. The engine was a 90-degree twin-overhead camshaft V8 with Lucas fuel injection, designed by Chief Engineer Tony Rudd, and initially it offered about 188bhp at 10,500rpm. The prototype P56 car introduced a neat and light multi-tubular spaceframe chassis with strikingly handsome bodywork, and the type began the 1962 season with individual megaphone exhausts swept-up from each cylinder bank. These won it the name of the ‘Stack-Pipe BRM’, and Hill won the first heat of the Brussels GP with it, then went on to win at Goodwood and then in an epic near dead-heat with Jim Clark’s Lotus-Climax at Silverstone. The stack-pipe exhausts regularly came adrift, and were replaced by a complex low-level system at Spa. Hill fought a season-long battle with Clark, and his American team-mate Richie Ginther drove ably to take third place in Germany and second to Hill in BRM’s great day at Monza. BRM V8 engines sold well to private customers, and the P56s raced on through 1963 when Hill won the Monaco and United States GPs and Ginther excelled once more. The pair chased Clark home in the World Championship table. By that time, people had stopped laughing at BRM!'

 

The car was generally known as the P578 to differentiate the 8-cylinder car from the previous season's 4-cylinder P57, but because it had a P56 engine the car itself was known as such by BRM. Behind the P578 is the Donington Museum's 1954 BRM P30, V16 Mk2 No2, alternatively known as V16/05. After the demise of the 4½ litre/1½ litre supercharged Formula One at the end of the 1951 season the Mk1 and Mk2 BRM's were raced in Formula Libre events until 1955, after which the BRM team concentrated on the new Formula One 2½ litre BRM P25.

Special:

- The Z8, created by a design team led by Chris Bangle while Henrik Fisker now is the best known man ☺! and interior by Scott Lempert, was at first shown as a concept car at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show.

- The real introduction was at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.

- This two seater roadster has an aluminum space frame and body (inspired by designer Count Albrecht Goertz's BMW 507 Roadster 1956-1959) with a BMW E39 M5 S62 engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, rear wheel drive and a 73 liter fuel tank.

- The engine was located behind the front axle in order to provide the car with 50/50 weight distribution and better handling.

- It has hydraulic dual circuit brakes with brake booster and stress reducer ventilated discs (front Ø 334 mm, rear 328 mm), front dual-piston fixed caliper, rear single-piston fixed caliper.

- The front suspension has lower wishbones with MacPherson struts and stabilizer, while the rear suspension has wishbones (above) and trailing arm with spring struts and stabilizer.

- Especially for the American and Japanese market BMW introduced the Alpina Roadster V8 (2002-2003), a downgraded 4.8L Alpina-tuned V8 engine from the Alpina E39 B10 V8 S, with a five-speed automatic gearbox (BMW Steptronic) and only 280 bhp.

- Until 2003 450 Alpina's were sold in the Us and the other 105 in Japan and Europe.

- Standard features were Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), neon exterior lighting, Xenon lights, a color-matching metal hardtop with rear defroster, a "birth register" and 1:18 Z8 model from Kyosho in the ordered colour combination.

- Its expensive MIG-welded aluminum spaceframe was produced at the Dingolfing Plant and than hand-finished in Munich, Germany.

- It was standard delivered with a hardtop. An electric textile roof was an option.

- The Z8 became famous being used in the 1999 James Bond film "The World Is Not Enough".

- From all 5,703 Z8s built, 3,160 are in ECE and 2,543 in US outfit.

The Ford RS200 — Brief History

 

Born for the wild world of Group B rallying, the Ford RS200 was unveiled in 1984 as a purpose‑built, mid‑engined, four‑wheel‑drive machine designed to take on the most extreme cars of its era. With a lightweight composite body by Ghia, a spaceframe chassis by Tony Southgate, and a turbocharged Cosworth BDT engine, it was engineered from scratch to be fast, agile, and uncompromising.

 

Homologation rules required 200 road cars, but when Group B was cancelled in 1986, Ford suddenly found itself with unsold chassis sitting in storage at Boreham. This led to one of the RS200’s quirks: the existence of several “1989 Ford RS200s,” despite none being built that year.

 

As Ford struggled to move the remaining stock, a number of completed but unregistered cars were sent to Tickford between 1988 and 1989. There they were trimmed, upgraded, and finally registered for the first time, giving them later‑year documentation even though the core cars were built earlier. These upgrades varied from improved interiors to mechanical refinements, depending on customer specification. The car in this triptych was first registered for use on UK roads in 1989 so likely falls into this category.

 

Today, the RS200 stands as one of rallying’s most iconic creations — a rare, raw reminder of the most dramatic era the sport has ever seen.

Avante GT (1982-86) Engine 1500cc Alfa Romeo

The Avante was a short lived Coupe (1982-86) it was an attempt at an exotic GT car based on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis, although a version with Golf GTi running gear was also tried. Designed in a simular style to the ageing Nova kit car, it is believed that fewer than 50 were sold. The Avante came with a quality fibreglass bodyshell, with integral spaceframe giving good rigidity and Volkswagen running gear though different engine fitments were possible such as the Alfa Romeo Boxer engine or Ford CVH

 

There was also a 2+2 version, which is physically bigger than the two seater GT, stylistically the two variants differ with the 2+2 having rear quarter light windows

Buttercup is configured in a typical SBS patrol configuration. The nose bay houses an integrated targeting and navigation suite combining radar, lidar, and a 12 mm rotary cannon turret for close-range interdiction. A modular dorsal rack carries a six-tube missile pack, consisting of five OG-88 "Brine" cluster interceptors and a single SX-3 "Silvercap" EMP soft-kill missile intended for disabling hostile electronics or drone swarms. The launcher interfaces with the vessel’s fire control suite via an external data bus linking the missile rack with the opposing targetting sensor package.

 

This configuration allows her to perform escort, interception, and electronic suppression roles while maintaining her primary function as a patrol and transport craft.

 

Like many long-serving patrol boats, Buttercup carries an unofficial crew mascot - Teddy Boatswain. The new modernist/structuralist Mercado municipal of Tavira is on the Avenida Don Manuel I, some 150m from the river. It was inaugurated in 1999. A remarkable feature of the edifice is its roof supporing space frame.

 

It has a central support ‘column’ (with integrated drainpipes) which is lit from above by a large skylight. The benches that encircle the column make it a fine place to sit. The old local men are alway there of course (they’re very good at choosing the best places to hang out) and its also a meeting places for the traders. So it’s in more than one sense a central spot in the market with a no doubt much appreciated panoptical quality. (Check out a panoptic situation with mirrors in Antwerp here )

 

At the market there is is a great abundance of fresh food, including seafood. In the plinth of the building on the avenida and riversides are shops and cafés.

And the butcher shops all offer one of the prime delicacies of Southern Portugal: Secretos de porco preto (try it when you visit Portugal!).

 

The market is historically the third market place of Tavira. The first place was formed by the big arcades of the town hall, the second is the Ribeira Market (inaugurated in 1887) and remained active until 1999. Thereafter It was redeveloped and renovated and is now a place of leisure, esplanades and commerce. A pic of the traditional pavement of that market is: here.

KVA was founded by Kenneth Vincent Atwell in the early 1980s. Ken Atwell was then working for Ford in Swansea when he first toyed with the idea of building his first replica. When fate leant a hand, Ford had requested that Ken help with the restoration of their own Mk3 car that had been involved in a filming accident. As there was no budget for the restoration Ken agreed to their request, completing the work in his home workshop with the proviso that he was allowed to take moulds from the body panels which he would later use to construct his own replica. He designed his own spaceframe chassis which exceeded the torsional strength required. By late 1982 his first car was complete and was displayed in the reception area at the plant. With Ford’s blessing, Ken formed a small company called KVA and began manufacturing kits that could be built up as replicas. He continued his full-time work as a Senior Engineer at Ford and, with the KVA developing rapidly his wife stepped in as business manager.

 

In 1994 the business was sold to Jules Hoffman of Integrity Motors in Florida.

1980 BMW M1

The BMW M1 was the first production car from BMW Motorsport. Clad in Italian bodywork by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and built by German specialty coachmaker Baur, this example of the E26 was imported into the US on March 27, 1980. DOT compliance testing soon followed in Los Angeles on May 25, 1980, where it passed with flying colors.

Its first owner was Kenneth Lloyds of Key Biscayne FL, who owned the car until 1986 when it was purchased by David Coffin of Sunapee, NH with only 8,778 km (5,454 miles) on odometer. Coffin, a car aficionado and collector, used the car sparingly for the next ten years. In 1996 the car moved on to a new owner, Robert Greene of Santa Cruz, CA with 12,162 km (7,557 miles) on odometer.

Knowing the collectable value of his M1, Greene put the car away in storage, only taking it out to have it inspected and smogged. The result of this careful preservation was that in 2012 this E26 had only 12,237 km (7604 miles).

The M1 has spent the last three years in the private collection of a BMW dealer in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and has covered only 800 miles since 2012.

Designed by one of the world’s greatest automotive stylists, and built by hand, this amazing low mileage car is a clear window into a unique period of automotive history. This M1 comes with its tools, manuals, spare and jack. Like all the automobiles at Canepa, it’s been thoroughly assessed and detailed, both cosmetically and mechanically, to ensure it meets and exceeds the expectations of collectors that drive their cars.

About the M1

The M1 is an iconic sports car, and launched BMW’s “M” motorsports division. BMW hand built just 453 M1s, making it one of their rarest models. Of those, only 399 were built for the street. The rest were destined for racing. The M1 was a mid-engine supercar. Its 3.5 liter four valve, twin-cam inline six was good for 277 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. The performance and handling were impressive, especially at speed. The handsome Giorgetto Giugiaro design successfully blended Teutonic and Italian machismo in a style that, 30 years later, still looks surprisingly current.

The E26 M1 project was approved by BMW AG in 1976 under the condition that it would not interfere with the production of any other BMW model. The M1 was developed to show that BMW was a legitimate manufacturer of sports cars that could compete with Porsche and Ferrari on the street, and to offer a purpose-built machine that could participate competitively in the Group 4 and Group 5 racing series.

BMW Motorsport initially contracted Lamborghini to assemble the cars with engines produced and shipped from Germany. However, severe financial troubles at Lamborghini forced BMW to terminate their agreement with the Italian supercar maker. Thus, the production examples of the E26 M1 were partially assembled at Ital Design in Turin using fiberglass bodywork supplied by T.I.R and tubular spaceframes supplied by Marchesi. Final assembly was then conducted at the Baur coachworks in Stuttgart, Germany. Each M1 was then given a final inspection at the BMW Motorsport facility in Munich before being delivered to its owner.

There are many conflicting production numbers regarding the E26 M1. The official BMW production figures show that 453 examples were produced in a three-year period between July 1978 and July 1981. Of these, between 54 were competition versions, while the remaining 399 examples constitute the road-going street cars. It is thought that the final street-legal M1 (non-Procar) was produced in February 1981.

In 1970 Ferrari began production of the 512 S to challenge the Porsche opposition. It was named after its 5-liter V12 engine and the Sport class which it raced in CSIA/FIA events.

 

Unfortunately, the 512 was largely unsuccessful at upsetting Porsche dominance. Although the 512 was much better balanced, the updated 917 was much faster and could reach speeds of 245 mph.

 

Chassis 1040 was the first 512 S that was revealed in November of 1969 after an eight month development period by Technical Director Mauro Forghieri. The 512 S was based on the 312 P chassis which had a steel spaceframe reinforced by aluminum panels.

 

The engine was installed as a semi-stressed member of the chassis. It was a derivative of the Project 241 Can-Am unit and offered 550 bhp at 8500 rpm.

 

Over the season, the 512 S received various aerodynamic appendages including a long tail for Le Mans. Eventually the entire body was replaced for the 512 M. The front and rear body panels were fabricated in fiberglass by Cigala & Bertinetti, a Torinese boat manufacturer. In 1970, the body was completely revised for the 512 M.

 

The first season, Ferrari and select customers raced the 512 S to little effect. Only one victory was scored at the Sebring 12 Hours and Porsche won almost every other race (source: Supercars.net).

Ford GT40 replica built by GT Developments. GTD began building GT40 copies for KVA in the mid-80s with a Ford V8 and Renault transaxle. Later they built their own version of a Lamborghini Contach using the same spaceframe and from 1987 a Lola T70 Mk.3.

This version was a roadgoing version of the GT40 Mk.2 race car. Designed by Ray Christopher and announced in 1990 this was first registered 2001 it is a very true copy. available with Ford 5 litre or 7 litre engines and performance quoted at 150 mph tops and a 0-60 of 5.2 seconds

The XP-430 is an innovative experimental prototype spacecraft, designed to test advanced manoeuvering principles. Built around a modified spaceframe from the model 60430 ship, the "Viper" features more specialised and extended control surfaces for in- and trans-atmosphere flight, as well as enhanced flight computers and more powerful thrusters.

This is a bit of a weird beast. I saw (what I assume was a digital creation) on Facebook about a year ago in a Lego site, with an open invitation for someone to create this in Lego.

 

I was curious, saved the post, and hoped to come back to it sometime later.

 

While not strictly a #ratrod this build nonetheless meets most of the design requirements. The body is a T1 Transporter double-cab pickup, with the rear body replaced by a spaceframe, with a mid-engined V8 race-engine. This extends the wheelbase over a standard T1, which is originally quite short. The front end is lowered significanty, tucking the wheels up into the guards.

 

Paintwork, rather than the standard faded/rusted look of ratrods, is a two-tome dark grey, trimmed of bumpers and trim features.

 

Built for #mocaroundgang 48th build chalenge for ratrods.

The company John Gordon, formerly of Peerless and Jim Keeble who came together in 1959 to produce the Buuick powered Gordon GT. The car still in development was later fitted with a Chevrolet 283 V8 into a spaceframe chasis with independent front suspension and all-round disc brakes. The complete chassis was then taken to Turin, Italy, where a body made of aluminium panels designed by Giugiaro was built by Bertone.

The car appeared on the Bertone stand in March 1960, branded simply as a Gordon, at the Geneva Motor Show., after road testing the car was shipped to Detroit were the Chevrolet management agreed to supply engines and components for a production run.

The production ready car was altered with a glass fibre body made by Williams & Pritchard Limited. replacing the aluminium of the prototype and a larger Chevrolet 327 Ci V8 (5398cc) engine

Problems with suppliers occurred and before many cars were made the money ran out and the company went into liquidation after only about 90 cars had been built, the company was purchased by Harold Smith and Geoffrey West and was re-registered as Keeble Cars Ltd. with production resuming in 1966 but halted after only a few car were built, with a combine total of 99 cars constructed, a final car was produced in 1967 from factory spares.

An attempt was made to restart production in 1968 when the rights to the car were bought by an American, John de Bruyne, but this came to nothing, although two cars badged as De Bruynes were shown at that year's New York Motor Show along with a new mid-engined coupé

This is a photograph that I took at Aintree on the Friday practice day for the British Grand Prix in July 1962. It's Trevor Taylor's Lotus 24 which was powered by the same 1,496cc Coventry Climax FWMV engine as the Lotus 25, but had a conventional spaceframe chassis instead of the Lotus 25's monocoque chassis. The Lotus 25 was to be run by the Lotus team and the Lotus 24 was intended to be a customer car although Trevor Taylor drove the Lotus 24 in five of the nine World Drivers' Championship races that season. He qualified in tenth place on the grid at Aintree and finished in eighth place in the race, and his only points scoring finish that season was in the Dutch Grand Prix when he finished in second place.

The Trichechus is synonymous with the IBN. Many craft still operating today are well over a century old, and some early spaceframes are approaching a century and a half in service.

 

During the early formation of the IBN, fleets of Trichechus boats were instrumental in allowing crews to patrol the Belt and enforce its emerging laws. Rugged, modular, and easily refitted, the platform quickly became the workhorse of frontier security operations.

 

While newer and more sophisticated spacecraft have since entered service, the Trichechus continues to be widely used by specialist units such as the SBS. Crews favour the platform for its reliability and adaptability, often echoing the old engineering maxim:

 

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

 

Multi-role, robust, and dependable, the Trichechus is widely regarded as one of the most successful military utility spacecraft ever produced. Originally designed by Bombardier AstroSystems, the craft’s near-perfect balance of durability, modularity, and maintainability has ensured its longevity across multiple generations of upgrades.

 

The defining feature of the design is its modular mission nose bay, which allows a wide range of interchangeable packages to be installed depending on operational requirements. These modules may include:

•radar and targeting suites

•weapons systems

•maintenance and repair manipulators

•autonomous drone ports

•sensor and survey packages

•cargo racks or salvage equipment

 

The raised cockpit provides excellent visibility for manual docking and close-quarters manoeuvring — a capability still highly valued in environments where line-of-sight piloting remains preferable to automated docking systems.

The 190SL was sold alongside the faster, more expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL, which it closely resembled both in its styling, engineering, detailing and fully independent suspension, both cars having double wishbone suspensions at the front and swing axles at the rear. However, the 190SL did not use the 300SL's purpose-built tubular spaceframe W198 platform, but was built on a shortened and monocoque R121 platform that modified from the W121 small saloon.

Development of the Lancia F1-car started in 1953 under supervision of Vittorio Jano, former chief-engineer at Alfa-Romeo. He opted for a V8, and in an effort to minimize the overall length, the engine was a structural part of the chassis, a novelty in racing at the time. The engine and the rear-mounted transmission were connected by a spaceframe. Aluminum fuel tanks were fitted as side pontoons between the wheels for optimum weight distribution. The driver seat sat lower than in most contemporary GP cars, because a single-piece propshaft ran alongside his seat. The D50 was very quick, but theeting problems prevented major successes. At the end of 1955, the Lancia team was handed over to Ferrari. In 1956 the only slightly modified Lancia-Ferraris D50 became World Champion with Fangio.

During the Resource World Summits of 2519, the X-511 spaceframe was adopted by the Interstellar Coalition Diplomatic Corps as the EA-D7 Shuttle. Following this publicity, the Heorot Shipbuilding Corporation successfully pushed for declassification of the nonmilitary hull and propulsion systems of the X-511 and received the right to produce its design commercially. From 2521, the EA-C series shuttles based on the X-511 spaceframe were offered in a variety of commercial options, sometimes tailored to the needs of a given contract. During the Federation War, the X-511 design achieved new prominence. The Sapphire-class shuttle was appreciated by troops of the ICMC for its rapid insertion capabilities, flexibility, and sturdiness, which made it the favoured craft for assaults during the space-dock raids of the early Foxfire Campaign. The CLF made use of both captured Sapphire-class Mk. I shuttles and of converted civilian EA-C shuttles, the latter most famously as the D-51 Assault Craft which boasted heavy missile pods and acceleration exceeding that of the ICNC Sapphire Mk. I. This chassis dates from 1987 and was purchased by a Scottish enthusiast, he began the build with the intention of using a Rover V8 engine driving through a Renault five speed gearbox. The build however ceased in its early stages and the kit put up for sale. Purchased in 2014 by builder and owner Peter Stevens, the car was stripped back to the basic chassis and modified to take a Ford V8 as were the original GT40s. More modern items that were included for driver comfort such as Air Con, Power Steering ect.

 

Build completed the cars first road trip was October 2016.

Messerschmidt were temporarily banned from building aircraft following World War II and had turned to producing other products, in 1952 they were approached by Fritz Fend with a view to manufacturing a small motor model was the KR175 launched in 1952 powered by a 175cc engine. based on his Fend Flitzer invalid carriage. Retailing for around DM 2,500, the KR200 was considered an instant success with almost 12,000 built during its first year, maximum speed was probably determined by the bravery of its pilot but due its lightweight the little car was capable of a speed in excess of 90 km/h (56 mph)

 

In 1956, around a year after West Germany joined NATO, Messerschmitt was allowed to manufacture aircraft again and lost interest in Fend's microcars. Messerschmitt sold the Regensburg works to Fend who, with brake and hub supplier Valentin Knott, formed Fahrzeug- und Maschinenbau GmbH Regensburg (FMR) to continue production of the KR200 but as the German and other economies began to recover sales of the bubble car derivatives decline and Messerchmidt car production ceased

Introduced in 1955, the 190 SL presented an attractive, more affordable alternative to the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, sharing its basic styling, engineering, detailing, and fully independent suspension. Both cars had double wishbones in front and swing axles at the rear. Instead of the 300 SL's expensive purpose-built W198 tubular spaceframe, the 190 SL used a shortened unitary floorpan modified from the W121 base saloon. A 1.9-litre four-cylinder inline engine was used instead of 300 SL's engine.

I got the first structure down for the canopy, a transparent egg made with Technic beams triangulated and a lot of canopies.

 

This ship is meant to be light and airy, a hybrid of modern architectural spaceframes, flying buttresses, and magical lands.

I know it's not February but I got a Buggy itch and had to scratch it. Really happy with how this has turned out, especially the spaceframe chassis, mudguards and lattice seat backs.

Introduced as a 4 seat front engine Grand Tourer as a belated replacement for the 412. Designed by Pietro Camardella under Lorenzo Ramaciotti at Pininfarina and originally only available as the 456 GT with the GTA, an Automatic version joining the range in 1996. The 5474cc V12, with 4 valve per cylininder engine produces 436bhp in a car of 1690kg. The chassis is tubular steel spaceframe construction, with a one piece composite bonnet and body panels of aluminium

A modified 456M was introduced in 1998 with improved aerodynamics, cooling system and interior which was to run until 2003
