Day 93 - Half Life 2

If you're going to back me into a corner and ask me what my favourite games of all time are. I'd not be able to give you a definitive number 1, as it's too hard to narrow down, plus it'd fluctuate far too often.

However! Half-Life 2 often makes any top 10's I conjure up in my head. Back in the early 00's when I'd finished my very first self-built computer, I finally got into PC gaming properly. This was after nearly 2 decades of being a console fiend (simply because my PC before that could only really run low requirement (generally outdated) games.

Not long after PC gaming had charmed me, Half Life 2 was released!

...After many delays, which you can hear about...here: video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7861393839432762235#

At the time Half Life 2 just blew me away...

Graphically it was great at it's time, especially compared to a lot of my console offerings, although that wasn't even key too why I liked it (or any games on this list really). I hadn't played the original Half Life beforehand, yet still I found myself really enjoying the dark story Half Life 2 offered.

To simplify, you're in a world controlled under a harsh regime, although the story is told in game in a very believable manner thanks to characters that made me really feel as though I could relate with in what they were going through. Plus the opposition in the game had you outnumbered and out-powered beyond all sense of hope, yet this set up an amazing sense of cautious desire to succeed.

Your typical FPS game would just consist of a bunch of set levels were you can mindlessly blast your way through, and many a times that has been all you would need to have a good game providing the gameplay and level design is good enough.

Half-Life 2 went much deeper than that though. You didn't have a sense of "levels". Instead you had 'chapters' that seamlessly flowed together, keeping you immersed into the experience, and in a sense it felt a lot more realistic.

Given the fact the opposition in the game was such a huge entity, you weren't simply shoved into places with a respawning health bar and left to deal with an unrealistic number of enemies on your own, instead you'd generally have a great sense of having to do things quietly or covertly, sure enough there were some amazing action pieces that had unrealistic odds for survival, but I remember many many hours of being hunched in front of the PC monitor, absorbing everything the game fed at me, and just loving the experience far beyond 95% of the FPS games I'd ever played before it.

I loved the vast range of environments the game took you through, to meet up with key story people, and initiate a number of great set pieces and sabotagery to bring down the powers that be. Traversing through futuristic cities, sewers, underground caves, forests, mountains, yet it all flowed in a way that was totally believable that you could and have done this all on foot yourself [as opposed to many other games where once you had finished a level, you would just randomly be in a new country or location for the next].

Obviously I have to give a lot of credit to the physics based puzzles in the game too, at the time this was a rare find in games, and especially so in an FPS. Credit goes to Valve's "Source Engine" for bringing that gameplay to life, and really adding to the overall experience Half-Life 2 offered.

The single player campaign in Half Life 2 definitely goes down as one of my favourite 1 player games I've ever played. A campaign that was further extended with the shorter, yet still sweet; Episodes 1 and 2. Thankfully though I owned this game originally on PC, and because of which I had access to "Half Life 2 Deathmatch".

I'm sure many people who've got some enjoyment out of this "25 years of Gaming" photo album have had a moment in there lives were they got addicted to some form of online multiplayer game for PC's (and I'm sure many of you reading this with the PC's to do so still have your vices). Personally, HL2 Death Match was the game I sank a perhaps shameful number of hours into.

I just loved the source engine gameplay that I'd become very familiar with from my hours spent in singleplayer. As well as the familiar Half Life 2 weapon set. So to mix that with a great range of multi-player maps both official, and ones made by modders... it was just what I wanted in an online FPS. The multi-player side seemed to embrace the humour of Half Life 2 too, so the game had a great sense of light hearted fun mixed with skill, which was part of the reason I really liked the Timesplitters series in multi-player.

Obvious bonus shout outs go to Counter Strike Source (which came included with my HL2 purchase), I definitely racked up a lot of hours played in that game too, and in fact I would love to find out what my total hours played across HL2, HL2DM and CSS were, but having had PC problems and numerous email changes I had a number of different 'xfire' accounts back in the day, and I'm not sure if I could find my 2-3 old accounts I had now to get that information. Regardless though. Whilst the number of hours played figure isn't laid out in front of me any more...nothing can shake the many many hours of fun I've had thanks to that original purchase of Half Life 2 on PC.

Roll on Half Life 3! - A game which I try not to think about, because it may be too much to ask for me to believe anything by Valve could top what Half Life 2 offered overall. Although even still, I want more Gordon Freeman in my life, and want to get more Half Life story!

"You just got dominated, toymaker."

"Take that, booksmarts!"

At the peak of daytime, a lone Engineer from Builders League United (BLU) stands guard, his goggled gaze focused on the distant control point. Unbeknownst to him, however, a Sniper from Reliable Excavation Demolition (RED) sits patiently as a fellow Soldier takes aim with his rocket launcher...

I'm pretty sure they were losing from the sounds they were making. Lots of yelling at each other and guys would just stop playing. Counterstrike was actually pretty fun to watch as an audience member.

Dr. Gordon Freeman - theoretical physicist by trade - peers around a steel corridor of the labyrinthine Black Mesa Research Facility. Faced with the looming threat of strange interdimensional creatures and government "clean-up" crews, it would behoove Dr. Freeman to remain in his Hazardous Environment Suit (HEV) until the crisis concludes, and to find a more suitable means of self-defense...

The announcers were on either side underneath the giant screens; you can't see the announcers or screen on the left side in this pic, obviously. One pair of announcers was in English, I think the other may have been in Chinese, or perhaps Korean--those are guesses because I couldn't hear them, only the English speaking announcers, but I'm basing that on either who made up the majority in terms of Asian-language speakers (ethnically Chinese Singaporeans) or the language of the people running the event (Korean).

The tables with five monitors on each were were the competing Counterstrike teams would sit. There were camera operators behind me with a giant crane which would move around the crowd and to the stage, and there wer camera operators on stage (which you can see) monitoring the faces of the competitors. The editing was done real time just like a sporting event and I think was quite competently done. The announcers would reference the map and the map would flash on the screen with pointers to where the competitors were, it was sort of like when football announcers bring up a play chart. They really managed with the announcing and filming to make this very (physically at least) solitary experience into a compelling event. The crowd was going wild as things were happening.

Does someone want to explain it to me?

(Truthfully though, SiN Episodes: Emergence is pretty cool.)

In this blog post and video I tried the legendary free source engine game Counter Strike Global Offensive the first time properly. I mean that I did try it before but I never really tried to go pro… Which is a joke because I am far from being professional. 1:00 - GLOBALOFFENSIVE In fact this whole post and gameplay revolves around my first steps in this game and my attempts to not fail. I also want to mention that I would be glad for some feedback and if you could tell me what you want me to play else. 10:00 - SOURCEENGINE The game was of course made with the epic Source Engine. In some modes people get the chance to jump high like on the Moon which I think is simply more epic than not jumping for reasons I cannot further explain. 20:00 - GAMEPLAY I personally like the fact that Counter Strike has a Battle Royale mode that I will for sure also try if I find some other players. However in this gameplay I tried some normal modes and training with Bots and the training mission. 30:00 - GAMING In fact this was my first longer gameplay of Cs Go in 2020 and I must say that it was actually amazingly fun. This was a big deal, and sort of representative as it was the Singapore team vs. the Korean Team; that is, the country hosting the event vs. the country organizing it.

I'm not quite sure what they were doing; I believe they were watching the scores. Perhaps there is the possibility of cheating too, I dunno.
