Playing around with f/x and timelapse macro videography.
20 minutes of video compressed down to 20s. The subject is a tungsten filament of an incandescent light bulb that I recently picked up. I thought it was cool to watch it dance and move slowly over time, so it was a good subject for a time lapse.

My friend Brendon and his wife Val have just shifted into their brand new house, so myself and two friends headed there on Friday night to have a chat and discuss our hobby (model railroads). I took along my UP 1983 (WP heritage paint scheme), to see if I could get to hear it (all my other model railroad stuff is stored in a container due to losing my 8 year old house (earthquake land damage).
Brendon models N scale while Val owns two HO scale KCS units (4032 was further to the right). Brendon got out some snap track and a power supply, but the total length of run was only just over the length of the three locos. They are all Athearn Genesis SD70ACe models with DCC and sound. It was great to hear all three locos start up and then go into idle. even if their run was rather restricted.
Can't wait to see these running around a railroad! Maybe a trip to Wellington to see Vival is in order!!

Caught a car accident on our security camera. I don't usually do video editing, so I didn't have a good editor on hand... But the one I had came with some built-in sound effects. Only a few. But enough to create this video, which has made us laugh out loud 50X, as well as made us lose some old friends (?!?!).
What? How can a funny video make you lose friends? Well, we had friends who wanted to come over and play Munchkin with us, but before we started playing, I wanted to stop and show my funny video. But "somebody who isn't me" would not stop arguing about how horrible the driver was for remaining in his vehicle for such an incredibly long time after the accident. For blocking traffic. The video is 41 seconds. You do the math on how slow the driver was in getting out of his vehicle.
For someone to come over to play board games, and instead argue with me at length about the video that I created to share with my friends and laugh with -- and then to leave, without playing the board game, because they were mad that I'm not going to agree with him about the argument he started in my house? How totally immature, and how completely overbearing and boorish. People have an image of me starting fights, but I would never go over to someone's place and argue about their video with them to the point that I have to storm out, leaving, without doing what I came to do. That's some hilarious diva bullshit.
The kicker was when I pointed out that the video is only 41 seconds, and that the people didn't sit there "for several minutes blocking traffic on a blind turn" after the accident not getting out, because the video itself simply IS NOT THAT LONG. "Is the passage of time wrong, now?", I asked. I believe that was the point where he said to his wife, "That's it, we're leaving." I just started laughing. Bam! 20 year friends walking back to their vehicle, in the rain, without an umbrella, getting wet where they otherwise would not have been (it only rained for a few minutes), recorded on video for posterity, for us to laugh at, as a last visage of a very argumentative and negative person that I had debated defriending for over 15 years.
I'm glad that he made such a procrastinated decision for us; We had been too gracious these past 15 years, but it was a case of "the merits of the wife outweigh the deficiencies of the husband". But it's not like we left it at that: We reached out after the argument that THEY started, and they never responded back. Time to cut the cord. Party leeches who have big houses and attend parties constantly but never throw their own tend to be one-sided friends, and this was another data point for that truth.
But anyway! This video, man! It is supposed to be hilarious, and not have a bad story attached to it! But because I apparently have shitty friends... The comedy of this video will always be mired by the stink of a bad friendship. How dare me invite someone over to teach them a fun board game, and then try to show them a funny video beforehand.
When I initially shared this story, many friends asked us who the people in this story were. Not wanting to finalize the nail in the friend-coffin just yet, and wanting to dial down on the gossip, we said that we would have a 3 month cooling-off period, before revealing any names. "Ask us again in November." Come November, nobody asked. Nobody missed them. Nobody ever brought them up. Nobody cared. They were not missed, in the slightest, by anybody that we currently hang out or socialize with. It is as if this anecdote never even happened! Funny stuff, in a way.
