Journeying along the path of the white trail. The beauty of the sun to my eyes never fails.

As the sun sets, it baths the land with its light. We admire its beauty with the gift of our sight. Parting the land with a kiss of its light. As it slowly fades away, it makes way for the night.

The sun sees ruins of old that have long been forgotten.

The decay of the land that lays desolate and rotten.

Beauty can be seen from the sheen of her rays.

No eyes lie praise amongst the living these days.

For those of haste with wasteful tongues, bicker bitter words of envy.

Blot out their eyes for those that despise my fall and my rise for tears shed their eyes.

For as I was in your beginning,

I shall to be in your end.

From the dust of the earth, you were birthed.

To the dust return all the accursed of no worth.

The faithful live for eternity.

While the faithless perish eternally.

My light can bring joy, and my light can bring pain.

How you decide to walk in life will be judged by my flame.

In 1910 stock broker William Porter built the colossal granite mansion “Foxcroft” on the top of Fox Hill, selected for the commanding views it afforded. In 1911, while traveling back to New York after a weekend at Foxcroft, Porter was killed in an automobile accident. He was survived by his wife Ruth Halliwell Porter, who was returning from a European vacation aboard the Lusitania at the time of the crash.

In 1913, Ruth married Warren Van Slyke and renamed their part-time retreat the Van Slyke Castle. When Warren died in 1925, Ruth moved to the castle permanently and remained there until her death in 1940. On March 1, 1949, the Castle was purchased by Celeste and Robin MacFadden, who subsequently sold to Suzanne S. Christie on July 2, 1951. Between 1951 and 1962, Suzanne S. Christie was to become Suzanne S. O’Sullivan then Suzanne Noyes Brussel. As strange as it may seem, Suzanne (who was the sole owner) abandoned the mansion between husbands, and left it to the mercy of the elements. In 1959, the magnificent structure was reduced to ruins in a fire of undetermined origin.

On August 18, 1978, Suzanne Brussel sold the ruins to Bruce Ademski of the Ademski and Van Saun Home Improvement Company. Ademski then subdivided the 15.9 acre parcel into three 5 acre lots. On February 22, 1980 the State of New Jersey filed a “Declaration of Taking;” which informed Ademski that his lots would soon be seized by the NJDEP at a non-negotiable price. Shortly after the receipt of this document, Ademski’s lots became part of Ramapo Mountain State Forest.

In the early part of the 20th century, Clifford MacEvoy purchased about 2600-acres of what would become Ramapo Mountain State Forest. In 1976 the area became state lands using Green Acres and federal funds. The majority of Park acreage was conveyed by the trustee of the Clifford MacEvoy estate to the State of New Jersey to be included as part of the existing Ramapo State Forest.

DNA studies suggest that native American dogs entered North America from Siberia roughly 10,000 years ago, and were then isolated for some 9000 years until the arrival of the first Europeans; these pre-contact dogs exhibited a unique genetic signature that is now almost gone. A study based on sequencing of ancient dog genomes, published in 2020, suggests that this pre-colonial ancestry survives in two Mexican breeds, to the extent of about 4% in the Chihuahua (and some 3% in the Xoloitzcuintli).

Colonial records refer to small, nearly hairless dogs at the beginning of the nineteenth century; one claims that sixteenth-century conquistadores found them plentiful in the region later known as Chihuahua. In a letter written in 1520, Hernan Cortés wrote that the Aztecs raised and sold little dogs as food.

The American Kennel Club first registered a Chihuahua in 1904, Midget, owned by H. Raynor of Texas.

The Palisades Cliffs are the eastern edge of a long, low mountain ridge that rises along the western shore of the Hudson River for more than 40 miles, from Staten Island north to Haverstraw, New York. The 12-mile section of the cliffs contained in the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey is roughly in the middle of this long ridgeline.

The name “Palisades” was given to the cliffs because they are formed from vertical columns of rock that resemble a stockade-type fence, or palisade. (A Native American name for these cliffs was Wee-Awk-En: “rocks-that-look-like-trees.”)

To a distant memory that I held dear, you've always been in my thoughts throughout all of these years. We parted with tears as we said our goodbyes. I watched the light fade dim from within your own eyes. As another sun sets, I live on with regret as I dread another step that I must walk all alone. Until my last breath, you'll be the distant memory that I'll never forget.

One of my favorite childhood insects that still fascinates me to this day. I decided to go out in the field after sunset. It took a great deal of patience to photograph this firefly in the dark with my lens set to manual focus with a aperture of F/1.2. The mosquitos had a buffet with me that night. All in all it was worth it, and I'm happy with this shot.
