Solar silicon at a New Stone Age settlement replica at the Broekpolder, Vlaardingen.
This settlement is a center piece of an educational program on the archaological findings from the late 1950s of the "Vlaardingencultuur" that date back to approximately 3000 BC.

Tonopah, Nevada, has a 110 megawatt solar thermal power plant called Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project. It will start operating later this year and will provide power for 75,000 homes. The anticipated to cost is a bit less than $1 billion.
This solar power plant can operate 24/7 - hot salt in a big tank stores energy for use at night. A truly large-scale project. An overview video describes this.

The 12 storeys are constructed of wooden building elements with straw insulation. It is a climate-positive building that stores the carbon dioxide the trees and the straw bound as they grew - perhaps also the world's most climate-positive building.
There are solar cells on the roof, balconies and facades and the building is a PlusEnergy building - it produces more energy than the tenants use. No district heating is needed, the building is heated with heat recovery from the ventilation air plus a heat pump.
The building consists of 52 apartments for rent (34-91 sqm) owned by ETC Bygg. On the ground floor are premesis for shops/offices and under ground are rooms for bicycles and a shared laundry.
The financing is unique since the base is crowdfunding: more than 3000 people have chosen to save and invest in the ETC building and solar companies (with returns), the rest of the project is financed through bank loans.

A rain storm was moving across the promontory of Ponta do Queimado where the Serreta Lighthouse is located on the day I visited. A lighthouse was originally erected on this site in 1908. But like many structures on Terceira it was partially destroyed in the massive January 1, 1980 earthquake. It was torn down and in 1983 the old 12 meter high metal tower from Cacilhas lighthouse in Almada on mainland Portugal was brought over to the Azores to replace the original lighthouse. That structure was replaced in 2004 with the current light house shown in this photo. Solar energy powers the new light that sits on a 14-metre cylindrical fibreglass structure. This lighthouse requires no light keeper.
The crystal sphere - Valued for seeing the future but I'm happy seeing the present. The glass ball is like a converging lens giving a lovely distortion with all lines pointing to the center. Like being in the middle of a snow globe or rather sun globe. The image is flipped so the scene in the ball is right side up, feels better this way.

The title is a play on a tail. The fossil fuel industry is riding on government subsidies and misses the boat. The renewable energy industry is smart and leaping ahead.
I climbed up a big sand dune to get a good vantage point. Walking barefoot was the easiest to get up on the dune. You see my steps at the crest.
I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from two RAW exposures, then merged them by blending 80% of the paintery version into the lower part of the scene.

The picture was taken on a freezing cold morning at Falling Sands Viaduct in Kidderminster.
I did one similar to this last year and have been wanting to do another and perhaps improve on it. It symbolizes human as caretaker to our planet . So take care, it's all we got.
