Miami Beach may be best known for its Art Deco architecture but strung along the sand are some brightly colors structures which play an equally compelling role in the city’s visual identity.
Despite their firmly rooted place in popular culture, the lifeguard towers of Miami are a relatively recent addition. When Hurricane Andrew swept through South Florida in 1992, the scale of the destruction was immense and the previous incarnations of the lifeguard huts were all but destroyed. The City of Miami made a forward-thinking decision to have them redesigned as future icons, with architect William Lane stepping in to design and construct the first new stands, followed by others commissioned by local business owners or as the result of design competitions.
Miami Beach is now home to 31 of these kaleidoscopic towers which lure visiting photographers to the shoreline in droves. Drawing inspiration from a mix of free flowing forms, cartoonist colorist and the city’s own brand of Tropical Deco, they continue to make an impression on tourists from around the world. We take a look at some of the quirkiest, most personality-filled huts on the block.

Metropolitan Miami is the major tourism hub in the American South, number two in the U.S. after New York City and number 13 in the world, including the popular destination of Miami Beach.

South Beach boasts creativity from every ounce of its being, which is why the South Beach lifeguard towers serve as vibrantly painted wooden ornaments strewn about the beach. Across South Beach’s two-mile shoreline, you’ll find plenty of lifeguard towers, each painted in rich color schemes. These Art Deco designs mirror the Art Deco District in which they’re found, which houses plentiful art and culture all along Ocean Drive.
The award-winning South Beach lifeguard towers, voluntarily designed by architect William Lane after the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, quickly became icons of South Beach and the greater Miami area. When Hurricane Andrew, Category 5, blew through Miami with 165 mph gusts, it traumatized the ordinarily bustling city. The storm left 10 dead in Dade County, and South Florida incurred roughly $25 billion of damage.
When Miami was at its weakest, William Lane saw an opportunity to boost the city’s spirits. The architect began construction of 29 whimsical towers, scattered throughout all 8.5 miles of Miami Beach. Most of the towers were repainted and restored since their original construction, but some of the originals still stand today. The towers not only remind Miami residents of the city’s resilience but also show visitors the very essence of the city’s attitude.
Even architectural critics acknowledged the brilliance behind the beachside towers. The geometric structures won the AIA Award for Excellence in Design, and Lane, the architect behind them, also received recognition for the project. In 1997, Lane won the Excellence in Architecture award, presented by the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Now, over two decades later, Lane’s at it again. Last year, the architect presented plans to create two more of these playful towers. The new towers, one round and one square, are taller and more durable than their predecessors – but they’re just as colorful. These and the existing towers embody the heart of Miami and South Beach, making them forever popular among tourists and locals.

I found this kitten at work. I wasn't going to bring him home, not until I saw those beautiful eyes. I have always wanted a cat with 2 different colored eyes. I really don't know how old he is, I'm guessing about 4 months old. I can't believe someone would drop this one off. He is very lovable and cries when I leave and when I come home.

I use only two types of editors, one is the Cyberlink Photodirector and the other is the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, these two editors consider them quite good, but I do not let myself be dragged by the creation if not more so than what I see in that moment.
In 90% of my photos I try to show the color of Miami Florida and the magic of this place in color, I have been and lived in some states of this country and I have given some trips out there, I have only seen color similarity in Islas Baleares, Canary Islands, Cuba, but the color of Miami Florida and its beaches is unique, dynamic and different.
And as is natural when I edit that light and color, I leave it as I see it in its 90%

The sculpture Awilda presents the artist’s large-scale portrait of a young girl from his native Barcelona, Spain.
The piece was initially shown in Rio de Janeiro by the sea, where it took on additional references, particularly Plensa’s interest in the Yoruba female deity of the sea, Lemanjá. The piece then traveled to Millennium Park in Chicago, where it became a popular icon for the city. Awilda’s new home in Miami returns her to a seaside location, as her serene face, with closed eyes, is positioned in front of the Port of Miami.
Jaume Plensa was born in 1955 in Barcelona, where he studied at the Llotja School of Art and Design and at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Art. Since 1980, the year of his first exhibition in Barcelona, he has lived and worked in Berlin, Brussels, England, France and the United States, as well as the Catalan capital.
He has been a teacher at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and regularly cooperates with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a guest professor. He has also given many lectures and courses at other universities, museums and cultural institutions around the world.
Plensa regularly shows his work at galleries and museums in Europe, the United States and Asia. The landmark exhibitions in his career include one organised at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona in 1996, which travelled to the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris and the Malmö Konsthall in Malmö (Sweden) the following year. In Germany, several museums have staged exhibitions of his work. These include Love Sounds at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover in 1999 and the recent The Secret Heart, which was shown at three museums in the city of Augsburg in 2014. During 2015 and 2016 the exhibition Human Landscape has travelled by several North American museums: Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art and Frist Center of the Visual Arts in Nashville, TN, the Tampa Museum of Art in Tampa FL and the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, OH.
