The Waterpoort or Hoogendster Pijp is a water gate, a gate in a defensive wall that connects a city to a waterway. It is situated in Sneek, the Netherlands.

In the 15th and 16th century, a defensive wall had been built around Sneek. The city lay on the important trade route between Leeuwarden and Stavoren, from which the rich western parts of the Netherlands (now North Holland and South Holland) could be reached. To facilitate this trade, a new harbour called the "Kolk" was built to the southwest of the city and in 1613 the Waterpoort was erected to connect city and harbour. It formed part of the city walls, but when large parts of these were demolished in the early 18th century, it was decided to leave the Waterpoort intact.

The style of the gate, now the symbol of Sneek, can be described as Manierist. It is unclear who designed it, but names suggested include those of Thomas Berentsz. and Jacob Lous. Above the gate itself, which originally would have had wooden fences, is a loggia (gallery) and above that are what were the quarters of the gatekeeper. On each side is an octagonal tower.

THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT AND FAVES

ON THE REACTIONS I WILL TRY TO RESPOND BACK

The water gate was probably built around 1492, at the same time as the city wall around the city.

In 1613 the gate was converted into an ornamental gate because it no longer had a military function. From that moment on, the gate basically has its current appearance. The architect is also unknown. A thorough renovation followed in 1757.

In 1785 the gate was given a guard house. The middle section now had a strong 18th-century appearance. From 1825, the city was no longer closed at night, so that the gate definitively lost its function.

The Waterpoort in Sneek, Netherlands, is one of the most iconic landmarks of the city. Here's a brief history and details about this architectural gem:

History of the Waterpoort

The Waterpoort (Water Gate) was built in 1613 as part of the city's defenses.

Originally, it served as a gate in the city wall, allowing access by water to Sneek, an important trading and shipping center in Friesland.

The gate is a classic example of Dutch Renaissance architecture, featuring two octagonal towers connected by an arch over the water.

Its distinctive design reflects both defensive and decorative elements, symbolizing the wealth and importance of Sneek during its golden age of trade. (Quelle/source: Internet)

Do you have a piece of clothing with the sign of Gaastra on it? When you are standing on that bridge, you see this view. Beautiful in reflection.

---------------

The Waterpoort of Sneek consists of two octagonal towers, with a bridge between them over the shipping route between the De Kolk and the Stadsgracht in the city centre, and a gatekeeper's house above the bridge. Sneek had four other water gates and two land gates, all of which have been demolished. The Waterpoort remained and is nowadays the symbol of Sneek.

The water gate was probably built around 1492, at the same time as the city wall and served to close off the water access to the city. In 1613 the gate was converted into an ornamental gate because it no longer had a military function. From that moment on, the gate has basically taken on its current appearance.

First I´d like to thank you for all the comments and favs on "the edge of reality", but I also want to say sorry cause I´ve been off for quite a while.

Currently I´m really busy with the preparations of my very first exhibition and I hardly find the time to go online or process new shots.

I´m so stocked that I can finally show my work to my "neighbourhood" and so curious about the feedback.

This is probably one of the funkier perspectives I´ve chosen for a landscape photo. I hope you guys like what you see!

A lovely morning to you!
