With a hull length of 820 ft (250 m), the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) amphibious assault ship [1] is gigantic when compared to the green and white Star Ferry [2], which is a passenger ferry service with its principal routes across Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.

Sometimes people asked me when I decide to process photographs in color vs black-and-white. It is easy. When things do not work as well in color, I develop them as black and white. Push as you will, but some photographs just won’t work as well in color.
This is one such example, the black and white version to follow. But here you see it is very foggy. You might say that it has a very blue cast—but it is not the cast. The natural laws of physics and the way air absorbs colors dictates that things in the far would appear bluish. The color information here is almost a distraction. But I am posting this here so you can compare after the fact.
Like I said, I am a nice guy. This is stitched together using seven 7D RAW captures mounted on a tripod at my living room window—a dangerous act with the camera exposed in the air, yes, but well worth it I think.

When you are driving, it is hard to see the speed limits. But traffic signs in Hong Kong are often placed on the ground. They are vertically scaled to match the eyesight of the driver.
These speed limits signage are seen on 西沙路 Sai Sha Road in 馬鞍山 Ma On Shan, a road in Hong Kong, which links together from Sai Kung District to Sha Tin District in the New Territories.

Do artists adapt their language to suit the audience that they intended? Some apparently do. This is a large scale installation by Jaume Plensa, an Catalan Spanish artist and sculptor. Using stainless steel to string along latin alphabets to form human forms is a motif dominant in his sculpture works [1], but this might be the first instance of them in Asian characters.
Unlike latin characters which can form all kinds of different meanings just by the jumbling of a limited character set, seen here are a collages of selected scripts. Perhaps most bizarre though is that it features characters from both the Japanese Kanji to Japanese Kana, some simplified Chinese characters. I cannot read Japanese so I do not know if they say anything specific, But there are some recognisable characters, such as 時 (time), 建 (architecture), 男 (Men), 界 (world, division), 案 (document, project), 力 (strength).
Only the artist himself would know what all these mean to him, but being able to relate more succinctly to the works (which often feel alien to me because they reference cultures in another world) is very welcoming indeed.

Jaume Plensa (Spanish, b.1955) is one of the world's foremost sculptors working in the public space, with over 30 projects spanning the globe in such cities as Chicago, Dubai, London, Liverpool, Nice, Tokyo, Toronto, and Vancouver.
Over the past 25 years, the artist has produced a rich body of work in the studio and the public realm. By combining conventional sculptural materials (glass, steel, bronze, aluminum) with more unconventional media (water, light, sound, video), and frequently incorporating text, Plensa creates hybrid works of intricate energy and psychology. From his delicately textured, intimate works on paper—like his 2005-06 series of ethnographic portraits that resemble worn, 19th century photographs—to monumental outdoor sculptures like Nomade (2007) and a range of cityscape-altering public projects like the Crown Fountain in Chicago (2000-05), Plensa's work takes many forms.
Plensa's work is invested in evoking emotion and stimulating intellectual engagement. By posing conceptual dualities in his work (inside/outside, front/back, light/dark), Plensa seeks to connect with his viewers on an intuitive level. Often, the viewer participation, or the object/viewer relationship, is what completes Plensa's work.
The winner of many national and international awards, Jaume Plensa has had solo exhibitions at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton, UK; Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; Institut Valencia d'Art Modern, Spain; the Musée Picasso, Antibes, France; the Arts Club of Chicago; Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid and Galerie National du Jeu de Paume, Paris among many others. He lives and works in Barcelona

I dread it when people ask me what I photograph, because I don’t really photograph anything particular that is deemed interesting to normal humans.
This is Hong Chong Road (康莊道), a road next to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel (海底隧道) in Hung Hom (紅磡). Far in the background is Hotel ICON (唯港薈), which is the teaching and research hotel built for The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM 酒店及旅遊業管理學院) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) [1].
I photograph this because I like how the lines lead the eye through the frame. This is for my 中文字形 Chinese Typographic Forms series, where I find Chinese characters in a frame after noting that the concept of 形 Forms is not readily appreciated by the Chinese audience but they can relate to Chinese characters.

I am usually not a big fan of these typographic lightbulb installations. However, the installation seen here at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia works well with its environment, and establishes a bit of interaction with the bystanders.
“You imagine what you desire” is the title of the 19th Biennale of Sydney which was on view from March 21st til June 9th. I had a brief visit when they were still putting the show up and the works were quite good. I even saw some of these pieces shown there at Art Basel Hong Kong 2014 (to be posted).

Chinese guardian lions, traditionally known in Chinese simply as Shi (獅, literally “lion”), are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China. Statues of guardian lions have traditionally stood in front of important Chinese architectures, and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits.
The lions are usually depicted in pairs. When used as statuory, the pair would consist of a male resting his paw upon an embroidered ball (in imperial contexts, representing supremacy over the world) and a female restraining a playful cub that is on its back (representing nurture).
Pictured is one of the bronze guardian lions outside the Gate of Supreme Harmony (太和門), the second major gate encountered when entering the Forbidden City from the south.

At first I did not notice the humanoid in red jeans with a scruffy beard. I was all too focused on the installation hanging from the ceiling made with mirrors and wires.
But the sculpture was small—so small that I moved closed enough to examine further. But then within my wide angle lens came a pretty face who asked if I am interested in the work.
There is quite a bit of charm in finding a well-dressed, good-looking, soft-spoken, and intellectual cuteness within all the insanity at an art fair. I supposed this is why girls love going to galleries?
I never exchanged contact information with him. But as you can see, I do know where he works now, so it should not be too hard for me to locate him in the future. Perhaps when I am in Denmark for vacation I will give him a hola — after all, they do show truly brilliant works.

乳豬 Baby suckling pig is a Chinese delicacy. Pictured is how it is served at 翠亨邨 Tsui Hang Village — where SML had his Chinese New Year dinner with the mom’s side of the family. Super yummy. # About 乳豬 Baby suckling pig
A suckling pig (or sucking pig) is a piglet fed on its mother's milk (i.e., a piglet which is still a "suckling"). In culinary, a suckling pig is slaughtered between the ages of two and six weeks. It is traditionally cooked whole, often roasted, in various cuisines. It is usually prepared for special occasions and gatherings.
The meat from suckling pig is pale and tender and the cooked skin is crisp and can be used for pork rinds. The texture of the meat can be somewhat gelatinous due to the amount of collagen in a young pig.

An extreme close-up of the camouflaged naval officer courtesy of the 100-400.
His carbine is loaded, but I am not sure why it was taped together with masking tape. At 400mm, I noted that he is married, as a silver wedding ring is on his left hand holding the massive gun.
Interestingly I note that his pants are either button-flied or ripped. If you look at full resolution you can see the torn stitches so I think that they are ripped. I do like these boots though. Note that the ties are completely concealed inside. Also, apparently the US Navy uses Motorola radios.
Photographed at ISO 12800 + 400mm: and you see why this recent purchase was a very sound decision indeed. It really is great for photojournalism uses.

Born Ralf Winkler in Dresden, Germany in 1939, A.R. Penck is the pseudonym for the artist, a name he used as he attempted to go under the radar to exhibit his artworks for the international audience while being actively pursued by the East Germany communist regime. His relationship with Galerie Michael Werner is significant, as it was this gallery where Penck would have his first public one-man show in 1969.
Penck’s paintings are known by its flat and pictographic imagery of human figures seen in Egyptian hieroglyphs—what the critics called “neo-primitivist”—and other totemic forms. His early works suggest influence from Picasso, but having been turned down by academies in Dresden and East Berlin in his academic years, his work is different than those with more formal attitudes.
Besides art, Penck also has his love for jazz music. A keen drummer, he took every opportunity to play with the best jazz musicians of the late 1980s. His love for music has obvious influence, as his paintings also often feature lively improvisation of forms and compositions.
A.R. Penck lives and works in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Dublin and New York.

I have always enjoyed the moment right after the rain. Water drops attached to all the plants, leaving a bit of shiny coating while water drops are found everywhere, giving a bit of life to all the botany around the neighborhood. The water drops add a bit of tension to an otherwise still capture. It is almost dropping—but not quite. It suggests motion while sitting still. In many ways, that water drop is like me stuck in some boring meetings—luckily that does not happen much anymore now that I only work on things which I love. :)

I have been on a roll for panoramas lately, but they are fun.
Bridges have great forms, but so do tunnels. Someone on Google+ commented that they don’t like the traffic in Hong Kong because it treats pedestrians as second-class citizens and stuck them underground—not true.
Tunnels allow pedestrians to cross the road without stopping traffic, so tunnels make it quick for pedestrians and cars alike to go through without stopping. It is a win-win urban-planning design.
On the far side you see some architecture with squares. Everyone in Hong Kong would immediately recognise that it is a school. Like I said before, the architectural forms are fairly standardized and they are instantly recognisable.

This is one of Chiang’s official state cars, donated by overseas Chinese in the Philippines. The 1955 GM-manufactured Cadillac is a four-door, seven-seat limousine that measures 610 (L) x 200 (W) x 163 (H) cm and weighs three tons. It is fitted with bulletproof glass and other security measures. Chiang, however, only used the vehicle once.
In countries that have indigenous automobile manufacturers, the government will usually commission one of the national automakers to provide a state car, or allow several to provide cars for an official state fleet. That the Taiwanese government picked something from an American manufacturer certainly shows the intimate relationship between the US and Taiwan.
Also of note is the car plate, which reads 0888. In Chinese language, the number 8 sounds similar to the word for abundance and good fortune, and is often the preferred number used for car plates, street numbers, cell phone numbers, etc.

A series of sculptures using ink, silkscreen, spray paint and enamel on wood with painted aluminum base seen at Michael Werner at Art Basel Hong Kong recently.
These works are not really my cup of tea—but it might have to do with the fact that they are placed against such an overwhelming wall of psychedelic paint.
Individally I do like the pieces, which appear out of the cubist paintings of Picasso, with the medium referencing that of street art. But in this installation view the peripherals stand to distract more so than to add.
Thoughts?

The serenity series are mostly photographs taken outside my window. It is the same exact view, but the scenery changes quite often—drama by nature!
The cloudscape at sunset this evening is simply too incredible not to capture it—nature never repeats itself so if I don’t do it today there will be no tomorrow to capture the same thing. Just wow! A panorama is currently being processed to show the full view. But since I already have a wide angle shot, I generally like to also do the detail view—with only the essence.

It used to be that I must mount on tripod to do panorama—Not anymore. Hugin, which is open source and thus free, has an uncanny ability to align images. The best part is that it can do so interactively.

This is a close up view of one of the nine Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters currently deployed on the USS Peleliu LHA-5.
The X at the front is the tail rotor, whereas the / in the back is one of the folded main rotor blades which spans 72 ft 2.8 in (22.01 m) when fully extended.
What I find to be particularly interesting is that the blades are marked by color bands in blue, red, black and yellow. I do not know the reasons for them, but I do see a usability rationale: when the weather condition is terrible and especially if you are in combat, being able to quickly communicate to your engineer which blade needs fixing definitely save time. Split second decision might often mean the difference between life and death, no doubt.
I do not know if this is specific to the US Marines or if it is a standard for helicopter designs, but I thought that it is wonderful.
# About the Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion
The CH-53 Sea Stallion is the most common name for the Sikorsky S-65 family of heavy-lift transport helicopters. Originally developed for use by the United States Marine Corps, it is also in service with Germany, Iran, Israel, and Mexico. The United States Air Force operated the HH-53 "Super Jolly Green Giant" during the late- and post-Vietnam War era, updating most of them as the MH-53 Pave Low.

Buses in Hong Kong serve an important function—it transports people traveling long distances between remote areas and downtown. Although the metro (MTR) is fast, it is also very crowdy. The last thing you want after a day of work is stand inside a compressed train being pushed around.
Pictured is a bus terminal located in Central, the financial district in Hong Kong. It is situated at the ground level of Exchange Square, the building which also houses the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. A time lapse video of this area can be seen earlier in the stream [1].
This 360-degree panorama was stitched together using 15 captures on the 6D + 17-40 f/4L mounted on the Manfrotto 303SPH. Many people walked by as I was photographing this, but you do not really see them as this was shot with a relatively long exposure. I do this intentionally to hide the identity of the pedestrians.

A man paddles his kayak leisurely at Tolo Harbour in Hong Kong.
Aside from his funny wetsuit which reads “I am very very slow,” I was drawn to the variety of water forms made by his paddle—from the “swoosh” on his left to the tiny droplet splashes on his right. Then of course there is a calm reflection on the water as well as the rather calm sea surface.

Two life-sized nude figures with long braided hair stand in front of a table on top of a Persian rug. A feast is served. It is that of a giant fish killed by arrows. The figures appear like tribal natives, but one is holding an umbrella in the modern era. The only thing that can summarize what is seen best is WTF?! This is the kind of works which I adore—things which although my logical unit cannot process, but I know I would love to live with it over time.
This installation is by Indonesian artist Entang Wiharso (b. 1967). There is not much written about him, except that his intention is “to combine personal, Western and Indonesian mythologies and cast a critical eye on the socio-political conditions of his country” — as with most art reviews, not entirely useful unfortunately.
If I have unlimited budget and can bring home any five items from Art Basel Hong Kong though, this would definitely be one of them. But I can’t quite reason why except that crazyisgood!
…Ironically my other favorite artist from the show, Chiharu Shiota, is also represented by ARNDT — trust that if I am ever in the market for some good works, they will be the one for me to visit.

I have always wanted to take photographs of the moon, but I think that my lenses are just not long enough. Every telephoto beyond the 400mm range are all > US$10,000+ — where do people get that kind of dough to buy those lenses? I can’t quite justify that yet. I wish that Hong Kong has a place for lens rentals. There must be something like this here. Or maybe in mainland China?

I have often formed the opinion that artworks which you cannot relate is not the artwork for you. In usual fashion, I am drawn to works which I find to be slightly bizarre.
From the espresso maker which I am planning to buy, an “object and its unreliable witnesses,” the “talking clock” to the witty form juxtaposed near one”s belly, I find this piece of work to be a feast to the eye.
I haven’t had a chance to speak to the gallerists so I can only respond to this as candidly as I can. I am certain that there will be far more “high-brow” mumbo-jumbo which you can chow down on various art sites. The links are below. Meanwhile as a layman this South African piece is calling to me in more ways than one.
(Note: You do much prefer my nonsensical analysis more so than the impossible-to-read essays written by people who get As in English from Yale, right?)
Seriously WTF. Crazyisgood. SML Love. Highly recommended.

# William Kentridge
William Kentridge (born 28 April 1955) is a South African artist best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. These are constructed by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again. He continues this process meticulously, giving each change to the drawing a quarter of a second to two seconds' screen time. A single drawing will be altered and filmed this way until the end of a scene. These palimpsest-like drawings are later displayed along with the films as finished pieces of art.

A curved pavement built in stone lead travelers from the peak of 泰山 Mount Tai all the way to the ground. Before the cable cars were built, this was the only way to travel to the top. It still took us an hour on foot from the cable car station to reach the top of the mountain though. To give you a sense of scale, if you zoom in you can see very tiny people walking on the path.

Every popular tourist destination comes with at least one or two living statues. Almost all are covered in paint from head to toe. I cannot imagine what a hard life it must be to support one’s living this way, especially at this weather.

My philosophy for HDR is different than most. I prefer them to look natural without much heavy-handed tone-mapping. This HDR image were composed using three captures: 1/6 sec, 1.3 sec and 10 sec.
The building on the left is 君臨天下 The Harbourside Tower 3, a luxury residential condo in West Kowloon, Hong Kong. The architecture to the right is the 環球貿易廣場 International Commerce Centre (ICC). Aside from being Hong Kong’s tallest building, it is also currently the world’s fifth tallest building by height and the world’s third tallest building by floors. It also houses The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong.

What happens when you string hundreds of hexagonal pieces of mirrors with vibrant concentric stripes together? A magical 3D kaleidoscope, it seems.
This installation titled “Supertaster” by Los Angeles-based artist Pae White is nothing short of being magical. With each step that viewer takes, the sculpture seems to change. And perhaps even more incredible is that its appearance changes depending on where the work was installed, as its myriads of mirrors reflect the sights from its surrounding.
In this stunning work, the insignificant becomes extraordinary. Highly recommended.

The National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine (國民革命忠烈祠) is considered a must-see attraction for visitors to Taiwan. It was built to honor the 390,000 Chinese soldiers killed during the Xinhai Revolution, Northern Expedition, Second Sino-Japanese War, Chinese Civil War, and the First and Second Taiwan Strait Crises.
The ceremonial changing of the guards, seen here, occurs every hour. The military officers stand still until they are replaced in the next hour.

An off-duty US Marine hangs out with another marine named Hurst (as seen on his jacket) near some air duct (venting system?) on the USS Peleliu.
Nearly every single man who is sitting by these openings at the ship is using either a cell phone or a computer. Could it be that they have no coverage in international waters? Or perhaps they cannot really check personal messages until they are near navy ports like Hong Kong?
For some shots I could even see what they have on their computer monitors—mostly white screens—clearly reception is an issue everywhere you go, and for sure the freegovwifi in Hong Kong is unusable. Good luck—go get a 3G card next time you are in town!

Summary
Typographic landscape of a city described through visually counting from 1 to 100.
Setup
These were shot with my first digital camera, the Sony Mavica FD7.
Statement
This was my first photography project. It started out as a project for a typography class while I was in college. Like most graphic design assignments at Yale, it was very open ended. We were asked to show the experience of a city through the language of typography. I have always been interested in numbers, and I as such I decided to run around New Haven and photograph numbers which represent the city, from 1 to 100.
The series is to be projected on the wall as slideshow. The numbers are recognizably New Haven, and most who have been in New Haven can recognize the sense of time and space as they go through the series. Some commented that it reminded them of Sesame Street.
I thought of extended this to different neighborhoods in New York, but I never had the time to work on more of them after college, and as such I have only completed the first and only one...
The original series was displayed via a conventional slide projector. In order to best-simulate the original intention on a computer, view the set as a slideshow and set the speed to fast.

The major historical events of the bride and groom is visualized in a timeline where you can see interesting tidbits of their life as well as intervals where they overlap around the world. It provides a different way to outlining their stories as just text and images. The actual date of the wedding + reception as well as today's date is highlighted so visitors can visually get a sense of when the different events are happening.
Instead of using username and password to gain entry to the site, visitors simply user their first name and last name to gain access to the site — they are on the guest list, they will gain access promptly.
No-click IxD. Almost all interaction requires no clicks (limiting clicks is part of my interaction design philosophy: interface should require clicks only where necessary as it requires much more efforts for the users than rollovers)

Since 1975, the BMW Art Car project has been inviting an international roster of artists to utilise their automobiles as canvas for art.
The project was introduced by the French racecar driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain, starting with Alexander Calder and the CSL 3.0, which Poulain himself raced in the 1975 Le Mans endurance race. Although the cars were intended to be race in the beginning, these days it has shifted the focus somewhat to position BMW as a player in the arts as luxury global brands have been seen to sponsor many art programs.
Pictured is the BMW Art Car #10 seen at Art Basel Hong Kong recently. It was painted by César Manrique, art artist and architect born in Arrecife, Lanzarote, and grew up in the area of San Ginés lagoon. It was painted in 1990 on a BMW 730i.

For a long while now, I have wondered what those weird rocks formation across the harbour is. Now that I can zoom way far, I took a pano and realised that they were not rocks at all. They were in fact Chinese traditional tombstones.
In remote locations in Hong Kong, there lies these traditional burial grounds which have been present before the modern times and dates back far before the Opium War after which the British took over as part of a 99 year lease from China [1].
The 風水 fengshui is excellent here. Its back is against the mountains and it faces the ocean. The area is called Yim Tin Tsai (Chinese: 鹽田仔; literally "Little Salt Field") [2]. It is apparently an island and is connected to the mainland in the north by a road to The Beverely Hills [3], a luxury residential development, and to the island of Ma Shi Chau [4] in the east by a tombolo.
Perhaps even more interesting is that a late neolithic prehistoric site sting back to about 4,000 years ago has been identified on the island. Members of the Hakka Chan (陳) clan were thought to have moved from today’s Shenzhen and settled in Yim Tin Tsai during the 19th century.
I have seen many fishermen boats coming from that vicinity towards me (also in the center of my capture), and it appears that there is in fact a fisherman village as well as a typhoon shelter for boats just across the hill.
(This sounds like a potentially full-blown photojournalism article for me to work on in the future—stay tuned)
Stitched together using 13 full resolution captures on the 7D with the 100-400.

For over 30 years, Los Angeles and Brooklyn based artist Kenny Scharf has been creating sparkly, pop-ed and monstrous paintings, sculptures and installations featuring imagery from animated cartoons in his childhood.
This particular character is called “Squirtz,” one of the artist’s “classic guys.” The one shown recently at Art Basel Hong Kong 2013 is a red one, though recently an 8-ft tall blue version can be spotted in New York at Paul Kasmin Gallery, The Standard, High Line when the artist has a solo show called “Kolors”.
The juxtaposition between the cheery sculpture and the gallerists show that the line which used to divide street art and fine art is becoming very blurry these days. Sparkly!

Sometimes when you are little it is hard to get noticed, but fear not, if you are good, you will still be spotted despite the noise around you.
This painting by UK artist Julie Roberts caught my eye because unlike most artworks which are screaming loudly to me, it is a world within its own. It is painted with oil, but the strokes it makes resemble one which looks like markers—with fine lines, accented with dots, rings and bubbles.
I recognize what is depicted almost immediately—it is that of a boys’ boarding school. There is something decidedly British about the scenery, and all have a child-like wonders to them in the distant past. It appears that going through historic archives is part of her process, and it really does show through.
Fine and exquisite. SML Love.

西灣 Sai Van is a bay area [1] at the Macau Peninsula [2], the oldest and most populous part of Macau. In the old times, it used to be a place where merchant ships dock, but it has become a residential area in modern times.
The locals—including schools and public media—pronounced the character 灣 as 環 even though the character suggest otherwise (different intonation in Chinese). Because of this, even the Macau public bus transport Transmac named the place as “西環” instead of “西灣”.
This panorama is stitched using 15 full resolution RAW captures with the 7D and the 24-70. The serial looks off mainly because I originally shot these bracketed intended as HDR but as I wrote earlier the pano processing combined with HDR is somewhat challenging at the moment and I will not attempt it until I have more time in the future.
The unmistakeable architecture for Grand Lisboa (新葡京) [3] can be seen on the far left of the frame, where as the Macau Tower is unfortunately chopped off. One unfortunate reality about these panorama shots is that if I had included the full tower then almost the entire frame would be filled with the sky. I would have had shot these with the 17-40 but I lend it to my dad who was traveling with me and he was way too far away for me to get it back so next time.

Like I said, the urban jungle is filled with interesting forms—especially through the reflective surfaces of skyscrapers whose windows were never perfectly flat.

I found it funny that there is a “Manly Ferry” at the pier. Is there a girly ferry somewhere also? It turns out that Manly is a surf beach in Sydney frequented by both locals and tourists. I did eventually go and it did not disappoint.
Photographed at Wharf 3, Circular Quay in Sydney with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L.
