If there were a single incident in the history of mankind where the act of war has solved any problems, I have never observed it. Instead, history has shown repeatedly to me that wars have contributed to massive sufferings of the human race and countless destructions of civilisations.
The state of affairs between US and Syria has troubled me deeply. I am so in awe with the justifications pumped out by propaganda machines that I feel the urge to say something, and this is the only way I knew how.
War is never justified.
War is never the answer.

No one can say that they do not enjoy receiving the “likes” on their feed. But I enjoy the comments more—comments which explain why they like or dislike something. I don’t mind negative comments really. If we only receive kudos and no criticisms then we will never grow.
In America, I learned the arts of being “politically correct.” The problem with that stance is that I never really know what people are trying to tell me. I prefer direct and open communication. Sometimes it does hurt quite a bit, but it only hurts when we have ego. Once we remove the self-pride (which is one of the seven deadly sins), there is nothing to be hurt about.
I would much rather you tell me that you don’t like something than telling me that “it’s nice” but secretly hating it.
Please criticize me in my face and tell me you absolutely dread this crap that I am posting. If you tell me, I will correct my course and post relevant content that is of interest to you. Of course I could also agree to disagree with you.
Feedbacks—good or bad—are always good. There is no such thing as constructive vs destructive criticisms. For me, criticisms are always good. It is always feedback. But elaborate feedback are better, because we know the why.
Have an opinion. Elaborate.

Being able to identify what I am not good at is difficult, so being diagnosed with ADHD + Bipolar was mostly a blessing as it became far easier for me to identify possible weaknesses using available statistics models.
What I suck at: time management, organization of physical space, people skills. By noting what I am not good at, I can then tackle the problem by delegating work which I cannot complete to others who are excellent at it.
+/ Since I suck at time management, I do not sign myself up on any large projects unless it has an excellent project manager.
+/ Since I suck at physical space organization, I find that it's often best if I date OCD people — ADHD/Bipolar + OCD = match made in heaven.
+/ Since I suck at people skills, I make sure that there is a “people person” co-host present when I wish to organize any event.
Apologies notes and thank you notes run through most of my daily communication. As such I was surprised to see that the majority of business stationary design jobs do not include these as standard deliverables. For my own business, I rarely find the need for business cards so I don't really print them (yet). However the first thing that I will be printing which I find to be most crucial are thank you notes and apologies notes such as these.
This will likely be printed on postcards so I can write + mail as needed.

“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. “Do it.
Do it for you.
Do it for your own happiness.
Do it so your life has meaning.
Do it so you can be.”
blog.seeminglee.com/2012/12/do-it.html
Countless humans I have interfaced with in the past have mentioned to me that they want to do something but they don't because they don't know what other people would think about them when they do it.
In his book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” author Stephen R. Covey suggests that moving from dependence to independence (i.e. self-mastery) is key to one’s happiness and sanity. In other words, caring about what other people think is a self-destruction act.
The happiness of others is not your concern—especially if you have not yet mastered self-happiness. You are however responsible for your own happiness. Everything that I do, I do it for myself. I don’t do anything because it makes other people happy. I do it because it makes me happy. The same philosophy applies for what I do for work. Work should be 100% fun. Work should be play and play only.
Once you learn to let go and not mind about other people‘s business, you can move on with your life. Opinionated people who “thoughtfully” offer suggestions to others are everywhere. They will continue to “care” about you and proceed to drive you nuts. In these scenarios, I find it best to initiate a dialog with them. Make sure that they understand that what they are suggesting is not helpful. Ask them to stop. Have the ability to “agree to disagree.”
Unfortunately some of these “caring people” will not stop even after prolonged discussions. In my experience, some humans—for reasons which escapes me—simply do not have a logic unit in their CPUs. These types of humans will continue to send negative waves in the form of opinions and comments as “suggestions” about what you do. When these are constantly present and leeching into your sanity, terminate relationships with them right away. If you can't cut them loose then just move as far away as possible.
Remember: be independent. Be yourself. Be happy. Be responsible for you and yourself only.

The 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple is situated at the top of 泰山 Mount Tai. It is a grand building complex which was built using a special combination of metal components, wood, and bricks and stone structures.
In the historic age (though I am unclear when it was actually built), workers must travel on foot to the mountain top. The temple is situated at the tallest peak—the 玉皇頂 Jade Emperor Peak—which is commonly reported as 1,545 metres (5,069 ft) tall, but is described by the PRC government as 1,532.7 metres (5,029 ft).
It is a living monument that anything—no matter how crazy—can be accomplished as long as you have the determination and the will. (1, 2)

I used to care about what people think about me. So I change the way I am for others. It drives me nuts.
In order to appear “normal” to people and be able to talk at half my normal rate, I started taking 40mg Strattera (ADHD medication) twice a day in 2007. Although people like it, I have also ceased to win any important international design awards because I also lose my creativity as a result. These days I minimize taking any. I noted that if I need to do any public speaking, if I just take 18mg on the morning then it's alright. Excessive Biohacking is bad for the soul.
In order to appeal to the body conscious gay community, I used to go to the gym 3x/week and had a professional personal trainer for two years. Did I feel good? Yes. Did he get me into shape? Yes. Did it increase the chance for me to be in love? No. Did I get happier? Yes and no. I did feel better but it is taking so much of my time that I ended up getting stressed out from not having the time to do my work—which is the most important thing in my life. I have thus decided that it is unimportant to me. I exercise these days from carrying all that photography equipment around town and in remote location. That works well.
Overtime I have stopped doing things just to please the crowd. I have principals. I make it my mission to talk about important issues which no one talks about. I make it my mission to blog about things which mainstream media will not cover. I have learned over time that being popular is unimportant to me. I am happy being on my own. If others don't like me it's ok. By being who I am I am able to do what I love. By being who I am I no longer waste time with people who are unimportant to me.
Self identity is something which defines who you are. Embrace it.
blog.seeminglee.com/2012/12/control-all-3-connectors-mave...
The Law of the Few.
The success of any kind of social epidemic is heavily dependent on the involvement of people with a particular and rare set of social gifts:
1/ Connectors = SML#Hub = SML#HR
2/ Mavens = SML#Journalism = SML#Media
3/ Salesmen = SML#Marketing = SML#PR
— Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point
Control all three. Control the network.
— SML Network Theory
People often ask me why I am so active on social networks, what I am trying to do, and what my “end game” is. My objective for SML Universe (org) is to give a voice to people who have no voice because of social bigotry. In order to do what I set out to do in order to effect change, Malcolm Gladwell’s book “The Tipping Point” suggests that I need to become all three types of people: connectors, mavens and salesmen. And this is what I try to do.
1. Connectors = SML#Hub = SML#HR
I try to go to different universes to meet random people. People who don't do what I do is interesting to me because I don't know anything about them. I am usually interested in things which I don't know anything about so I ended up meeting lots of people who do not seem to relate. Because of this, I find myself often functioning as an HR for jobs, and I am more than happy to send introductions to people because I believe that when awesome people come together they often create amazing, beautiful, and creative things.
2. Mavens = SML#Journalism = SML#Media
When I see interesting things happening when I explore the random universe, I like to blog about them. I enjoy photography so I tend to record a visual record of what I see. Photojournalism is therapeutic and it gives me opportunities to write, so I do a lot of it. It was said that pictures say a thousand words and I certainly believe so. Often people don't have the time to read my essay length blog posts but most don't mind looking at photos. So that works out nicely. I also started turning my photography into videography interviews. I enjoy every opportunity to create as the act of creation gives me the thrill. It is my happiness life hacks. The bonus is that I get to write music as soundtracks so those are all very fun.
3. Salesmen = SML#Marketing = SML#PR
When I publish content I always simulcast to multiple social media networks. Most people believe that they only need to be on a single network, so in order to to reach the entire critical mass I post the same thing to multiple networks, all with very different audience. This works out nicely. Content where people like on Flickr are often very different than those for Instagram or Foursquare or Twitter or Facebook or Tumblr. Since I can't really tell when and why people will like something, covering the entire UGC content media network is important, and is also what I advise / recommend companies in the business of reaching critical mass do when I do marketing strategy for them.

Removing history does not work. Public unsearchability creates a false sense of safety. Just because you are not searchable by the public domain does not equate unsearchability.
Put yourself in the shoe of Google: if you just spend a whole lot of resources to dig up all these information, are you really going to disposed them all that easily? Most likely not. If I were Google, I will be happy to remove your result from the public domain to keep peace with you.
Tada! Due to quesiontable actions committed by you to fulfill your very desire to remove data, I have just identified why I get into the search business at the first place: to mine important intelligence data that no one else has a copy of. Thanks to your help, I have just identified what you considered to be most damaging to your credibility. I’m sure that businesses will pay me tons of money just to get their hands onto my treasure chest.

The older you get, the more you begin to appreciate the availability of time. Your time is limited, but how do you prioritize for things which are important?
I used to put priority in terms of categories: work, self, love, family. But when you group things into categories then sometimes you have exceptions and rules with exceptions are tricky to follow.
So now I only ask myself one question: “Is this worth doing if I die tomorrow?” If it is worth doing, then I do it. If it is not worth doing then I postpone it as long as postponing so will not affect anyone else.
This I learned mostly from Steve Jobs, which before his death gave a commencement speech at Stanford which has affected me deeply [1].
Is this post worth writing if I die tomorrow? I believe so. And therefore it is written and posted.

It never “gets better.” The campaign which tells you that it does has no idea wtf they are talking about.
People who are narrow minded will continue to hate and discriminate you for who you are. But when you grow older you will learn to understand that their hating you is not your fault. You can try to educate and help them understand you better. You can also try to understand why they think the way they do. Investigate. Research. Do not give up. Don't hate them for hating you. Invite a dialog with them.
When you understand where other people are coming from and why they form the opinion that they do, you can choose to agree or to disagree. Being able to agree to disagree is a sign of maturity. You have power when you recognize that your being you is your own business. Life is too short caring about what other people think. You are not responsible for their happiness. You are however responsible for your own happiness.
You are you. You have you. You will always have you. If you believe in yourself, you need not care what other people think. If they hate you for your being you, just tell them to fuck off. Be yourself. Never change for others.

There are many people I am friends with on different social media sites where I don't know in real life. I use social networks differently then most people I think. Most people use social networks to keep in contact with their friends. I, on the other hand, use social networks to find interesting people, converse with them, and then when I have had much fun with them on these networks, I proceed to then meet them in real life. When the term Web 2.0 was popular way back in 2009, I used to call this behavior Web 3.0. I meet people this way from all social networks—networks which you won't think that it is possible to meet people but somehow I did.
+ Delicious (social bookmarking site): I met David Bausola (zeroinfluencer) because I was researching the interactive agency R/GA and he also appear to be tagging a lot of their content.
+ LibraryThing (social book collection site—way before GoodReads existed): I met Juhan Sonin this way. LibraryThing has an interesting feature which compares library according to similarity. As a designer + technologist, I have a rather unusual library which spans both design and technology. Juhan also is an interaction designer and so he also reads design, technology and photography. When I met him on Libraryathing, our library has a 75% overlap. It's too bad that he's straight as otherwise I would so date him! :)
+ FriendFeed (the super awesome share everything site which Facebook bought): I met Deborah Hustic (a Linux-loving technology blogger who blogs about everything from wearable technology to Linus distros). I met Sofarsoshawn (a super awesome crazy funny gay writer in Canada). I met Ode Andersson (an awesome Swedish guy who crazily enjoys my Facebook posts)—swedes are awesome! The people I met on FriendFeed I don't yet meet but I plan on visiting Europe next year or two and I plan on meeting all of them when I do! The social web is unbound by geographical locations. We are all connected through hashtags and data analytics. It is amazing that way. Use it. Harness it. Make web your own.

Adding things is a human fallacy. People have a tendency to create value through adding. Add more features, add more colors, add more fonts, add more things, add more people, add more likes. Everything is lost in chaos. Nothing is seen.
I photograph this, because it depicts a balance of forms, color and composition. It is a good example of how to use colors, in particular. Colors are utilized as accents. If you want to accent anything, use it sparingly. The pipes of the ceiling forms are in a relatively neutral off-gray, with strokes of red and blue just here and there, the overall composition is formed. It has contrast. It is balanced.
The same principle can be used in design. Use one font, make one huge, make others small. Use red sparingly, contrast with sea of black. Of course, the reverse is also true. If you fill the page with red, you can accent by having a small point of white also. Everything just need to have contrast. Without contrast everything is just a blur.

Say no to things which are unrealistic.
I have a tendency to over-commit. In the past when clients asked me if I can do something within an unrealistically short period of time, I used to agree to them and as a result also drove myself to death—literally. The stress was so high that I had contemplated killing myself.
The crazy thing was that since I was a perfectionist then, I decided to postpone suicide because I could not see myself having a tomb with something like “SML, the one who did not finish an XYZ project.” I also considered the possibility that no one would show up to my funeral because I somehow messed up their project. Yes I know that this is all very funny but somehow crazies have their crazy ways to cope with life.
These days I just say no. I tell people to go find someone else for things which I think will kill me. Interestingly they usually stay with me because usually when I was given unrealistic requests like that it was because they could not find any humans to do it and I am usually their last hope.
Wishful thinking is a common attribute among humans. Humans are just weird.

blog.seeminglee.com/2012/12/professionalism-is-qualitativ...
Some people said that they are not a professional because they don't make any money doing what they do. I find this interesting. What does making money have anything to do with being a professional or not?
To me, professionalism is an attitude. It is a measure of how one approaches an activity. It has nothing to do with the amount of money one makes doing it.
I have worked with countless so-called “professionals” in my years of business over the years and I can tell you that there are a lot of people—regardless of competency—who charge their clients exuberant sums of money but who can never deliver what was promised. I have also worked with countless so-called “non-professionals” who do not receive much pay but are top-notch in what they do.
You are a professional if you can deliver a professional product. You are a professional if you maintain a professional attitude while doing it. You are not a professional just because you do it for a living. You are not a professional just because you have a degree in that field. You are most certainly not a professional just because you are able to make lots of money doing it.
Business transactions are monetary exchange agree by two parties. Business dealings, monetary compensation and professionalism often relate. However, relationship is not the same as equality.

I love photographing trash. I started my “Deadyard” series for a few reasons:
1. Often people respond to photography because of the intrinsically beautiful subject matter. I see it all the time. Sh!tty photos of beautiful men. Very popular photography with no inherent photographic value. It is unhealthy. I have a few of those sh!tty photos on my Flickr stream also. I have no idea why they become so popular. People are responding to the person, not the photography. So by photographing intrinsically ugly things the viewer must respond to the photography itself.
2. I am far from perfect. So in some ways these are self portraits. Broken, battered, depressed and left out to die. They are real. This is what life is. When you face life head one and be able to stay your own, you are fearless. I see beauty in everything around me. Life is much more enjoyable this way.
3. I know looking at other photography works that many people also see the beauty of decay. There are far more interesting things, textures, and forms in wasteland. No one really care to organise them. But they are beautiful. Just imagine for a second that these are not trash but forms in an abstract painting. This is what I would paint if I were a painter. This is poetry to my eyes.
Pictured: the trash file left behind on the roof of some storefront in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Photographed while walking on a pedestrian bridge and thus be able to see all the things which were left behind. Completely random, though every bit interesting.
