On a winter morning, the day Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, a once historic town wakes up in the Deccan plateau in India to its present day mundane destiny.
A man takes many decisions in life, some work out well, some do not and some can be equated to veritable disasters. This is how personal history as well as history of the world gets shaped and formed.
Of many ruinous decisions that the great Mughal and the preceding Tughlaq empires took in its 1000 years of dominion over the Indian subcontinent, two stand out for sheer stupidity and lack of common sense. One the decision of the Mughal emperor Akbar to commemorate his victory and to make a new city at Fatehpur Sikri in the year 1570 and the other the proposed city of Prosperity two centuries earlier in 1327 by the Tughluq leader Muhammad Bin Tughluq.
Both the places were supposed to be converted to the capitals of the empires and huge population shifts were carried out. Both were abandoned a few years later for the lack of water.
Grand follies indeed of magnanimous proportions.
Pictured here is the Daulatabad fort on top of the hill and forming the skyline. The foreground comprises of the flatlands and the dry river bed and a few solitary battlements. This is the view of the fort and the town from the traditional caravan route running atop an adjoining hill and running down into the valley below.
It must have been just like this centuries ago when the Tughluq rulers ruled the brief roost here, (bar the 3 communications antennae and the brick kilns and buildings in the foreground ).
