"It's been exactly a year since the Commission severely restricted staff presence in the offices in order to avoid as much as possible the spread of the virus among its staff. So for one year we have been working almost exclusively from home, all our meetings have been by video, and we no longer go on mission. [...] As the prospects for a slow exit from the crisis seem to materialise, we would like to look back with you on this year which was so special in many respects. To remember, not forget, to mark this deadline. Would you like to share with us a memory, anecdote, gesture, learning, a particular moment of this year?"
This is in essence the call that we - my manager and me - launched to our 700+ colleagues to mark a year of teleworking. It's part of my job, as internal communication officer, to help colleagues to keep social connections, also through initiatives like this one. And I love to illustrate them with hand-made drawings.

One of the university teams, SmartWorks, is developing inexpensive consumer micro-robots for some of the least pleasant home cleaning tasks.
At the DFJ Venture Challenge yesterday, the 15 winners of university business plan competitions convened for a state-wide finals event. They were all fascinating and creative, yet completely different from each other.
The two winners will each receive $250K of seed financing:
• Bionic Harvest from Cal Tech: Electrical energy harvesting from the motion of the human body to recharge the batteries in implantable medical devices.
• World of Good from UC Berkeley: ethically sourced fair trade artisan gifts sold in mainstream retailers.
Congrats to these wonderful entrepreneurs!
First day of work in 2012. Offices are desperately empty. Most people are still on holidays. These chairs/sofas are also offices since we are all "smart working" now.
