I am sad to pass on the news of the passing of a superb human being and nature photographer, Jim Dubois, Garnite.

Jim was a wonderful, funny person who met adversity with a continued love of life.

We met on Fotolog back in 2004 or so and were part of a funny group.

Think of this as a reflection on the tragi-comedy of life ala Samuel Beckett.

I will toast his memory with a glass of wine later today as I watch Treme, listening to New Orleans Jazz.

A second and last for the moment of Planet photos. The base photo was a shot taken at dawn last June looking down a hill in the South Downs on a poppy field and other fields to the mist in the Arun Valley in West Sussex just as the sun was rising. See the first Comment for the base picture. Unlike the previous shot there was sky in this image and an ideal even tone for the process. I have seen pictures before of panoramas turned into small planets but have never tried it until this week The key is hidden away in Photoshop and Elements under Filter – Distort and Polar Coordinates. It sounds complicated but can be done in 10 minutes when you get used to it following some simple steps. I have done the first Blog entry on my Website in a while showing the steps required with screenshots to produce the previous image and this one used the same process, see edwinjonesphotography.com/blog/2019/5/a-simple-way-to-cre...

Small planet shots are usually done with 360 panoramas but for this shot I used a simpler method again of a single image flipped as described on my Blog entry. I think in this case a 360 would not have worked as well as behind me was an area of ploughing and then a high hedge and road at the top of the hill.

Unusually among the historical castles of France, Rambouillet plays a role as important now as it did in the past - it is now the summer residence for French presidents, and frequent host to heads of state from other countries.

Dating from the 14th century, at which time it was a manor house, it gained importance as an occasional royal residence, and it was here that King Francois I died in 1547.

The castle retains a medieval defensive form, with turrets in each corner of the building, although the castle has been very extensively altered during the follwoing centuries.

The extensive gardens and parkland that surround the castle were laid out during the first half of the 17th century - the castle is surrounded by 200 square kilometres of land, much of it covered by ancient forests. The garden is significantly more 'English' in style than many of the castles in the Paris region and the Loire Valley.

Towards the end of the 18th century the castle passed to the crown under Louis XVI, bought as a gift for Marie Antoinette. It's political importance continued into the 19th century - Napoleon occasionally stayed here, and his 'successor' King Charles X, abdicated at the castle.

It is from the end of the 19th century that Rambouillet has acted as the official French Presidential summer residence.

During the 20th century many important meetings and summits have been held here. General de Gaulle frequently held important receptions at the castle. More recent engagements have included the G6 meetings of leading industrialised nations, Kosovo peace agreement discussions, and state visits by Boris Yeltsin and Nelson Mandela.

360° panorama, view large, small planet

- tripode manfrotto x055

- rótula Nodal Ninja 3 MKII

- sigma 15mm f2.8

- flashes: canon 580 EXII, 430 EXII y Metz 54 MZ disparados usando unos Elinchrom Skyport Speed

- 5D MkII
