At the last La Mesa Custom Car Show of the summer.

July 15, 2018

Another shot of the Rickey Weisse. This is a great beer, and I actually liked this shot better than the first one. The suds spilling over the top seemed to give a little "life" to the still life. This one is slightly out of focus though, so it has to take a back seat.

Welcome to low-end heaven. This tightly packed display of Bacchus bass guitars, spotted in a Tokyo music store, reads like a love letter to boutique craftsmanship at accessible price points. Made in Japan by Deviser, Bacchus is a brand celebrated for delivering hand-finished instruments with tonal punch, custom-shop looks, and smooth-as-butter playability—all without the eye-watering price tag of some boutique luthiers.

At the heart of this display are numerous Bacchus Handmade Series and Global Series basses, each flaunting its own distinct finish—from charcoal burst to natural ash and deep aqua quilt tops. The headstocks gleam under recessed lighting, while the gloss finishes play with reflections from the polished wood floors. There's a heavy lean into 5-string and 6-string territory here, a clear sign that this shop caters to serious players who need versatility, extended range, and modern tonal flexibility.

Architecturally, the display itself is an efficient labyrinth of sonic sculpture. The basses stand tightly packed but thoughtfully arranged, forming a visually rhythmic grid of tuner pegs, fingerboards, and tonal variety. The shop’s lighting design—cool ceiling spots over warm floor tones—gives the entire room a curated gallery feel.

This isn’t just a retail moment—it’s a snapshot of a culture that reveres craft. In Japan, even production-line instruments get attention to detail usually reserved for custom shops elsewhere. Whether you’re a slap-happy funk monster or a fingerstyle explorer, Bacchus offers a gateway into the boutique world that feels both grounded and elevated.

PALATE

Caramel | Vanilla | Pear | Sweet apple | Nutmeg

FINISH

Warming spice | Raisin | Light cinnamon | Touch of malt | Seasoned oak | Medium length | Light ethanol aftertaste

OVERALL

A sophisticated bottle design perfectly mirrors what the bourbon inside the bottle offers.

Notes of caramel and vanilla are found throughout the bourbon acting as a steady constant and bringing a classic style to the bourbon. From there though, the whiskey looks to expand its horizons. The nose is noticeably light and surprisingly fruity with green apple, citrus, and sherry combining to a pleasant effect. The palate introduces pear and sweet apple for its part, before transitioning to a more baking spices and oaky affair for its finish.

The brand claims for all intent of purposes, that this is a bottled-in-bond bourbon, but due to contractual obligations couldn’t disclose its DSP number preventing it from featuring it on its label. Comprised of just 10-15 barrels, it's definitely a small batch bourbon that showcases the rounding off some edges while also allowing it to keep some character more akin to single barrels or very small batches.

Thursday is my Friday this week.

I am taking a well deserved off tomorrow so I am having my usual Friday night Manhattan tonight.

I picked up this bottle of Elijah Craig last weekend and I waited until tonight to try it out.

I have to admit that it's a really nice Bourbon.

The label translates its name to "The well deserved beer." Hard light from warm late winter sun is shining on the deck, making it feel more like early spring than winter.

This is the 2nd beer that I've tried from my variety pack. Very tasty and refreshing, outside on a sunny, but crisp Sunday afternoon.

A session sour by Dogfish Head Brewery. Very refreshing on the beach.

Our annual 4th of July trip to Head of the Meadow was washed out, so we found a break in the weather today to make up for lost time. It was a short trip, but a good one.

The crowd was typical at the lot entrance, but a short walk to the North put us in a spot with ample elbow room.

A hand-held shot in the tasting room of the Labrot & Graham Distillery where Woodford Reserve Bourbon is produced.

Woodford Reserve is a brand of premium small batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey produced by the Brown-Forman Corporation. It is distilled at the company's Woodford Reserve Distillery, aka the Labrot & Graham Distillery; the oldest of the nine bourbon distilleries in current operation in Kentucky as of 2010.. Each bottle is numbered with a batch number and bottle number. In 1995 the distillery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2000 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Woodford Reserve Distillery offers tours and is part of the American Whiskey Trail and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail promotional programs. In a contract arrangement with Churchill Downs, Woodford Reserve has been declared the "official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby" and is used in a $1,000 mint julep cocktail that is sold to patrons on Derby Day.
