The Zwinger is a complex of buildings with gardens in Dresden. The masterpiece of architecture, sculpture and painting, which was built under the direction of the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser, is one of the most important Baroque buildings and, along with the Frauenkirche, is the most famous architectural monument in Dresden. Its name Zwinger goes back to the medieval name for a part of a fortress between the outer and inner fortress walls, although the kennel no longer had a function corresponding to the name when construction began.

Happy Caturday 17.8.2019 "Long and thin"

Back to Millstone Edge with a shot taken just over a week ago during some of the best light I’ve seen for a long time. I’d gone up in the evening as the forecast showed sunshine and rain which can result in great conditions, I arrived up on the edge and could see the storm clouds building but strong sun behind them produced fantastic light throwing down golden shafts. This was the view looking down over Hathersage and the Hope Valley and I just loved the way the sun has illuminated the river and put perfect shadows of the trees onto the fields.(Olympus EM-1 Mkii 12-100mm f/4 pro 1/40 f/6.3 @ 38mm Kase Wolverine 4 stop soft grad + slimline CPL)

Wednesday evening I had my second visit to this amazing poppy field after going earlier in the week and having poor light. I met up with Andy and Mark and we arrived to thick grey clouds and initially didn’t look too promising. But gradually the sky began to clear and the light started to improve until the sun finally burst through magnificently backlighting the flowers creating a stunning scene which was a delight to experience.(Olympus EM-1 mkii 12-100mm f/4 pro 1/30 f/6.3 @ 12mm Kase Wolverine 4 stop reverse grad + slimline polarising filters)

This is a very rare sight, I've never seen both Optare Solos in service together. The school bus R8 journey is timed ahead of the routine R8 journey, however here both vehicles arrive together.

This is the reverse of my pocket watch, the obverse side can be seen here; www.flickr.com/photos/119509436@N06/54560147643/in/datepo...

It is a slimline one and is just under 2.5 inches from base to the handle at the top.

I bought this pocket watch when I was promoted to the Sargeants Mess while serving. You may detect slight red hues to the gilding, this is because the RAMC Mess Dress was dark blue Surge, with Cherry Red edging and waistcoat / vest. Over the years the red surge wore away some of the surface and stained the front and back red.

Until I changed my 3 piece civilian suit recently, I used the watch regularly. I now have a 2 piece suit and therefore do not use it.

Sadly it does not work any longer as the battery has died and I haven't yet found watchmaker / jewelry store willing to try and open up the casing to replace it.

THE NEW STANDARD BICYCLE RACK FOR NYC

The Hoop Rack designed by Ian Mahaffy and Maarten de Greeve is the new standard bicycle rack for the streets of New York City. There are over 5000 racks installed throughout the city, as part of a larger initiative that is helping transform New York into a cycle-friendly city — designed for the New York City Department of Transportation (

The circular shape of the Hoop Rack provides accessible locking points all around its profile for all sizes of bicycle frames and wheels. An intersecting horizontal bar is at an optimal height for locking the bicycle frame. Moreover, the slimline design profile allows it to be easily installed on the crowded NYC sidewalks while consuming a minimum space and preventing congestion. As a whole and in its details, there are sharp or protruding edges or parts that could cause harm to pedestrians or bicycles.

Our aim for the design was twofold, to create a simple yet symbolic design for NYC and improved functionality over the existing installed racks. The circular and wheel like form is the symbol and expresses a strong relationship with the bicycle, helping with functional communication.

Though the form, materials and manufacturing process we considered how well it should fit into different urban environments from the more modern and new build areas of Manhattan to the classic and historic neighbourhoods like the brownstones around Brooklyn.

Creating a design that could stand the test of time, survive harsh weather and treatment on the streets of NYC was critical. The pure form of the circle has inert strength as well as a simplicity to being timeless.

We considered a permanent look in the NYC urban environment, and material choice and production methods helped achieve this. We also wanted a good fit with other street features such as utility hole covers and quality park benches. For strength (tried and tested), character, permanence and solidity cast iron was selected.

The simple pared down form allows for multiple racks to be placed close together without becoming an ‘eyesore,’ crude looking, attention seeking or overbearing. The clean and simple design makes this possible.

“Mahaffy and DeGreeve have created a bike rack that works beautifully in a variety of contexts: in historic districts and newly built environments. The form of the rack-a wheel-is ‘product semantics’ in motion!

Mahaffy and De Greeve’s design reflects a modern simplicity that will greatly enhance the City’s streetscape. The rack is round with a horizontal crossbar, evoking an abstracted bicycle tire. Constructed of cast-metal, the design is elegant yet sturdy enough to withstand New York cyclists’ harsh treatment.”

Thursday evening with sunshine and heavy showers forecast I decided to head out to Millstone Edge as these conditions can result in some dramatic images.

Heading up onto the edge the light was wonderful, thick storm clouds were moving rapidly down the Hope Valley but the sun was brightly shining behind them creating fantastic shafts of warm light to spill over the landscape. By now the rain had started with vengeance so I sorted my composition and placed a cloth over over my lens and filters to keep most of it off then it was just a case of whipping it off firing a quick shot and covering it up again.

I got completely soaked but came away with a big grin on my face and a few shots that I’m really pleased with this one being on of my favourites of the day.(Olympus EM-1 Mkii 12-100mm f/4 pro 1/13 f/6.3 @ 31mm Kase Wolverine 4 stop Reverse grad + slimline CPL)

Live your passion / with Slimline Moonphase Manufacture / says Frederique Constant from Geneve.

I couldn't believe how busy the Fairy Pools were when we arrived. We even struggled to get a parking spot it was that busy.

We headed on up to the most popular vantage spot - I kept on having to stop to pull my socks up as I had my wellies on and they kept falling down! so glad I had purchased them prior to this trip as we lived in them 90% of the week.

Shot using Kase Filters - ND64 (6 Stop) and the Slimline Polariser

Could have ideally done with a slightly faster shutter speed possibly a 2-3 ND Stop filter but I only had the 6 stop with me and didn't want to compromise else where.

I over exposed the photos so the area which suffers from the "spotlight" effect you usually get with this telescope has completely blown out, leaving most of the disc featureless. Howerver, I was lucky enough that the only active region currently visible was just outside the area that I over exposed and these 2 huge prominences came out ok

A shot of South Stack Lighthouse just outside Holyhead. This location has been on my list of places to shoot at sunset for a long time so it was lovely to visit here and get some fantastic conditions. I arrived about an hour before the sunset and set my camera up on the steep cliff edge looking down over the lighthouse, the sunset was very nice but we got the best colour a little while after the sun had set when a bit more cloud had moved in.(Olympus EM-1 mkii 12-100mm f/4pro 0.8sec f/6.3 @ 12mm Kase Wolverine 3 stop Reverses grad + Slimline polariser K9 system holder)

G-HEKL, Percival Mew Gull (replica) built in 2008

The Percival Mew Gull was a British racing aircraft of the 1930s. It was a small, single-engine, single-seat, low-wing monoplane of wooden construction, normally powered by a six-cylinder de Havilland Gipsy Six piston engine. During its racing career it set many records and was considered a significant, efficient design.

On Sunday we went onto Anglesey and over to Llanddwyn island to capture the classic shot of the lighthouse for sunset. We actually got some dry weather for a change but did get a few heavy rain showers which helped to produce some lovely dramatic skies, this is Llanddwyn cross and the lighthouse catching the late afternoon light taken a few minutes before the heavens opened giving us another soaking.(Olympus EM-1 Mkii 12-100mm f/4 pro 1/320 f/6.3 @ 12mm Kase Wolverine GND 1.2 (4 stop) soft grad + slimline magnetic polarising filter)

The Optare Solo.

The Optare Solo has been manufactured in Leeds by Optare plc since 1997. The name "Solo" is a play on the the low-floor status of the bus, the manufacturer believing its vehicle having an entrance "so low" to the floor, namely 200mm with kneeling suspension.

The innovative design, featuring a front axle ahead of the entrance, gained the bus a "Millennium Product" award, along with " The Queens Award for Enterprise 2000".

It is an integral bus, (as opposed to a seperate chassis and body) built in a modular design, with a steel frame and GRP panels.

The Solo is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM904LA engine, which produces 122bhp or 147bhp (91kW or 110kW) according to specification. Typically, it is fitted with an Allison 2000 fully-automatic gearbox. Later models had options of Cummins engines and alternative gearboxes.

The standard Solo has a width of 2.5m, and is available in various lengths, Chassis type: M780 is 7.8m, M850 is 8.5m, M920 is 9.2m, and M990 is 9.9m.

Solo's with the Cummins engines needed 0.3m of extra bodywork to accomodate the larger engine, but this wasnt shown in the Chassis code, so a Solo M990 with a Cummins engine would in fact be 10.2m in lenght.

With the launch of the M990 Solo model, it became the first to be offered with LED-type rear lights, instead of the rear rectangular clusters.

Seating capacities were: M780 25, M850 29, M920 33, and M990 37.

A narrow-bodied version named the "Slimline" was launched into service in August 2004. It was 2.33m wide, and is identifiable by the code "SL" suffix, in the Model code ie M780SL, it also has small wheelarch extensions mounted to the rear. It was available in all lengths except the M990 9.9m models. The 25 seating capacity of the M780 made it a popular replacement vehicle for ageing minibuses etc.

In June 2006, Optare announced another new Solo model, the Solo SE. At 2.33m in width, and 7.1m in lenght, it was the shortest Solo offered. Seating capacity was 23. It also utilised a single piece entrance door. Plant were also made to produce a model in 7.8m lenght.

Some models were exported to the USA and Europe.

Playstation 3 Slim - a new 120 GB model announced, it's a great time to pick up a Playstation 3 Slim to play games and watch Blu-ray movies.

I have an 80 Gb PS3, so will probably not be getting one. That having beens said. this may be the answer Sony has been looking for. With the Large Hdd and the pricing, it may be the thing to get the consumers attention. The biggest problem I have heard concerning the PS3 is price. This is a very good price for what you will be getting. This may push those who were on the fence about laying out the money, over to buying one. Hopefully, this Playstation 3 Slim new developement will be the thing to spur sales of the console and by extention create greater support by game developers for the PS3. It is only $[...] more then the Wii and you get a heckuva lot more for your buck. As for lack of backwards compatibility, no problem. The PS2 slimline has come down in price. I also have a PS2 ( Non Slimline )so I enjoy games for both.
