Many people in China sleep on bamboo mats on top of their bedding in the summer heat, as it is very cool and comfortable. Here it is joining the laundry on the line and getting the sun treatment "shai" , killing off bacteria and drying up.

here the second night, by the beach. It rained, again, but the company, the fire, the whiskey, the ocean, the swim, the sea foam, the mushrooms, the rainbow, the stars, made up for it many times over.

We are told that Canada is the only country that packages fresh milk for sale...in colourful milk bags ( the milk is inside the bags in sturdy 1 litre clear bags...we put the bag in a jug )...

A local group in this town has been crocheting or weaving the bags into sleeping mats ...which are shipped to places ( Haiti is the main recipient...) ...The mats are not liked by biting bugs and poisonous spiders...and they are easily washed and they provide great comfort for people who must sleep on the ground.

In the past 5 years, this group has made about a thousand matts. !

I went to help ...just a little...and observe today... so you can see the process.

Top pic shows two woven mats ( faster to make: looms made by Bob Hastings, a friend of ours..... ) and one crocheted...most of the early mats were crocheted. All are made from cut strips of clean empty milk bags.

A catalogue/promo shoot for some new sleeping mats I helped design at work. We really wanted to feature the surface texture of the mats, which is a big design feature so I used a low hung strip soft box and no fill.

To get the fade-to-black at the back of the picture I only put a strobe in the close end of the box, and not the far end (It's a home made strip-box with a hole at each end for strobes) and meticulously hung flags between the mat and the box.

The valve was almost completely black, so I rigged a mega-tight snoot on another strobe to bring that up a bit. Snoot was a ~40cm tube with the front almost completely taped over - again, a lot of meticulous testing and refining until only a pea sized hole remained.

The only post processing required was to black out white walls at the edge of frame, and contrast/sharpness type boost.

I'd like to thank my boutique light modifiers - cardboard, aluminium foil and gaffer's tape.

Our booty. Major haul today. Major. This stuff cost $75.75 total (plus $17.57 for the gas we used). But it's worth about $919.72, so our money was multiplied by 9.86X. Works out to $126/hr in savings!

We had just run out of rosemary (which seems to last a decade), and these French people were selling huge bottles of fresh rosemary from their garden. SLACK! Win! $5.00 was a good price. Weighted it on a digital scale: It was 184 grams. At Giant prices, that's $88.85 of rosemary! The Parmesian-cheese jar it came in was repurosed (plastic lids suck); the Rosemary thusly moved into proper, metal-lidded, glass jars.

The self-inflating sleeping pad was a steal. The yuppies bought a $90 sleeping pad, decided it wasn't good enough, upgraded, then sold us the $90 for $2? Let's profit on your rampant consumerism! I'll sleep extra well knowing somebody else paid for it! What I want to know is... How much was the upgraded pad, if the $90 wasn't good enough? These people don't seem like campers as much as people who like to protect the image of being campers and talk about it like some kind of consumerist trend, discussing the awesomeness of their overpriced camping gear as "shop talk". Judging.

Meanwhile, for $1, we bought a $15.45 wireless USB adaptor, just in case Carolyn needs it for her non-wifi old laptop. It could come in handy someday, assuming it works.

Because of the heat, the cats spent most of the day hiding from the sun. Under the chairs was a popular spot, as was under the camping gear.

The sleeping quarters, again matching her dress. It was freezing in the night and boiling in the morning and very uncomfy, we only got comfortable the last night we were there.

When I found the office, a monk who was sitting on the floor, got up and made me put on some slippers, and took me to my room. It was a room with no furniture, but he took some mats and blankets from a closet and put them on the floor for me to sleep on. The room was cold although there was a small space heater trying to keep some warmth in the room. It is about 25 degrees outside, and there are sliding doors to the outside with only rice paper windows. There is no bathroom, but there is a common toilet at the end of the hall.

I told him I was going for a walk and would be back at 6:00. He said no, I had to be back at 5:30 for dinner. So I took a short walk, took some pictures at other nearby temples, and returned by 5:30.

Every time it gets harder to stuff a 4-person, full-height tent, three sleeping mats, three sleeping bags, three pillows and a mallet into a single rucksack.

In fact, this time I had to leave out a sleeping bag and a pillow. I might have managed the pillow, but then, I might have broken the zip on the rucksack. We'll squeeze the remainder in somewhere else.

Beavis jumped on top of the rolled-up sleeping mat. I guess he wanted to be higher up. It looks like he has some heightened awareness going on -- probably due to everyone packing.

Tent, Inflatable Pillow, Towel, Socks, First Aid Kit, Inflatable Sleeping Mat

In the tent, as mentioned here, www.flickr.com/photos/chsor4/4340548200/, Morten and Lærke were preparing their sleepingbags and sleepingmats. The bottom layer had to be very insulating. It was made from two heavy groundsheets, to sleepingmats with aluminiumfoil on it, to reflect our bodyheat from the torso, and our own sleepingmats. I'm not sure every bit of it was necessary, but better safe than sorry. Especially when it is concerning our sleep.
