Chiaroscuro, derived from the Italian words "chiaro" (light) and "scuro" (dark), is a prominent technique in art, particularly in painting and drawing. It involves the skillful use of strong contrasts between light and dark elements within a composition. These bold variations in light and shadow not only create visual drama but also play a crucial role in conveying depth, form, and a three-dimensional quality to the objects and figures depicted in the artwork.
In the world of art, chiaroscuro is often used to enhance the realism and sculptural quality of a subject. By strategically placing highlights and shadows, artists can give the illusion of volume, texture, and spatial relationships, making two-dimensional artworks appear more lifelike and tangible.
Chiaroscuro is a technique that has been employed by many renowned artists throughout history, with notable examples including the works of Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Leonardo da Vinci. Their masterful use of light and shadow not only brought their subjects to life but also added emotional depth and atmosphere to their creations.
This concept of chiaroscuro extends beyond the realm of visual arts and finds application in other forms of media as well. In cinema and photography, the manipulation of light and shadow to create dramatic effects and depth is also referred to as chiaroscuro. Filmmakers and photographers use this technique to evoke mood, highlight key elements, and enhance storytelling through the interplay of light and darkness.
Chiaroscuro is a fundamental artistic technique that harnesses the power of contrasting light and dark to achieve both visual impact and a sense of three-dimensionality. It remains a timeless and influential aspect of artistic expression, bridging the gap between traditional art forms and contemporary media like film and photography.

Hello my amazing Flickr friends !
Today is a pink or purple day at Color my World Daily and we have a very awesome theme at Smile on Saturday: composite images.
I must admit it wasn’t an easy one for me. I’m truly a huge fan of composite images and I would love to be able to create awesome pictures and magical composite worlds… Unfortunately I’m not very skillful at picture manipulation and I rarely use composite pictures in my photos. Maybe that is something I should learn. This theme is perfect for starting this learning process. And here we have this composite flying world which doesn’t make sense at all. Maybe it is an alcohol induced vision which was in my head, who knows ? I hope you will like it and I hope it will make you smile ! Of course it involves an egg... floating egg.
Mucho, mucho amor for you all !!
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts!! Stay safe and well!!

Well it was bound to happen eventually! Yesterday the light was terrible and nothing was happening, very boring and I even pulled out the fairy lights, still nothing. With a very limited number of small ornaments on display this year I was going to take a pass on this week's Macro Mondays theme after having so much trouble with this little Santa. That was until I woke up and had some beautiful sun coming into the studio! I was bound and determined to make something work. That was until the star of the show fell off the chair and had a wee bit of an accident. Well the show must go on, I'm just going to say this fine little Santa took one for the team this week. Perhaps I can skillfully glue back the pieces and no one will be the wiser. I doubt it but we'll see.
This Santa measures app 2 inches tall, his buddies are 2.25 inches tall so good to go for Macro Mondays. Shot with the Meyer Optik 50mm f/1.8 Oreston, with a Nikon PK-12 14mm Extension Tube, focus stack of 2 images. Direct morning sun for lighting. For the group Macro Mondays, Theme: "Festive Season".
Technical note: The Oreston loves to saturate colors with early morning sunlight especially red, here I desaturated the red berries and dark green of the holly leaves a bit. It also can really tone down bright early morning sunlight. I shot the same scene with the Nikon 55mm Micro and way too much contrast.
Mardin, a poetic city in Southeastern Turkey, gives her visitors the feeling that time has ceased. Excavations in the area show that Mardin saw classic settlement since 4500 B.C. Mardin is an open air museum which skillfully mixes structures from Subari, Hurri, Sumerian, Akkadian, Mitanian, Hittite, Assyrian, Scythian, Babylonian, Persian, Macedonian, Abgarian, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Seljuk, Artuqid and Ottoman periods. There are many important locations in the city where archeological excavations may take place. After these excavations, the history of the city will be made more clear.

Young Red Panda Bear at Zurich Zoo.
The red panda is slightly larger than a domestic cat with a bear-like body and thick russet fur. The belly and limbs are black, and there are white markings on the side of the head and above its small eyes. Red pandas are very skillful and acrobatic animals that predominantly stay in trees. Almost 50% of the red panda’s habitat is in the Eastern Himalayas. They use their long, bushy tails for balance and to cover themselves in winter, presumably for warmth. Primarily an herbivore, the name panda is said to come from the Nepali word ‘ponya,’ which means bamboo or plant eating animal. (WWF)

I was surprised when I saw this on the hiking trail – cut trees are being burnt with no one around. According to an in-park free shuttle driver, this is called "Controlled Burn", and that park rangers burn excessive and/or sick/dead trees and return their ashes to earth every winter, which is actually necessary to keep the forest healthy. It takes a few days for the woods to burn completely, but as it is done skillfully, a few days before rain, there is no risk of causing forest fires.
This operation is also the part of the beautiful park.

"The Syndics," also known as "The Sampling Officials," is a renowned painting created by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn in 1662. It is an exceptional example of group portraiture from the Dutch Golden Age, depicting five men gathered around a table, engaged in their duties as syndics (officers) of the Amsterdam Drapers' Guild.
The painting is notable for its meticulous attention to detail and Rembrandt's skillful use of light and shadow. The figures are positioned in a semi-circle around the table, with their faces illuminated by a strong light source from the left. This dramatic lighting technique creates a sense of depth and dimensionality, drawing the viewer's attention to the individual expressions and gestures of the syndics.
Each syndic is portrayed with distinctive characteristics, capturing their roles and personalities within the guild. Rembrandt expertly renders their varied facial features, clothing, and accessories, demonstrating his mastery in capturing human likeness and conveying individuality. The syndics are shown examining fabric samples, which symbolize their responsibility for regulating quality and standards within the textile industry.
"The Syndics" is regarded as one of Rembrandt's most celebrated works and is highly regarded for its technical brilliance and psychological depth. The painting exemplifies his ability to infuse ordinary subjects with dignity and introspection, elevating them beyond mere representation. It also reflects the artist's deep understanding of human nature, emphasizing the individuality and humanity of each syndic.
Today, "The Syndics" is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it continues to captivate visitors with its remarkable craftsmanship and profound insight into the human condition. It stands as a testament to Rembrandt's enduring legacy as one of the greatest painters in Western art history.

Even when the wind is quite strong the Red Kite seems to relish taking to the air, drifting over woodlands and fields, its forked tail twisting skillfully like a rudder.

This is one of the more comical species to observe as they seem to be constantly squabbling, bantering and charging across the surface of the water at a rival with flailing, splashing wings in an effort to intimidate during the breeding season and then after the young are raised they gather in groups of thousands especially in a few select staging areas.
Despite the fact they have lobed feet rather than webbed they are still very skillful swimmers and when feeding can dabble like a duck, dive like a diving duck and also forage on land.
Their favored habitat is a shallow pond, marsh or wetland with a good supply of emerged vegetation where they build their floating nests, lay 5 - 15 eggs per clutch that they incubate for 21 - 25 days. They will raise one or two broods per season.
This adult bird is spending the winter months in a shallow portion of the shoreline of Lake Ontario.

Exploring an old theme of the false images we create for ourselves in consumer culture. The fanned fire of gossip, judgement and 'cancellation' of those that disagree with our own mightily-held opinions ... all incendiary acts that don't really help us move forward skillfully. Mannequins as representing the false humanities we create to hide behind and judge from. Decoys to distract us off from our real, mutual humanity.

The little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), also known as dabchick, is a member of the grebe family of water birds.
The little grebe is a small water bird with a pointed bill. The adult is unmistakable in summer, predominantly dark above with its rich, rufous colour neck, cheeks and flanks, and bright yellow gape. The rufous is replaced by a dirty brownish grey in non-breeding and juvenile birds.
Juvenile birds have a yellow bill with a small black tip, and black and white streaks on the cheeks and sides of the neck as seen below. This yellow bill darkens as the juveniles age, eventually turning black in adulthood.
In winter, its size, buff plumage, with a darker back and cap, and “powder puff” rear end enable easy identification of this species. The little grebe's breeding call, given singly or in duet, is a trilled repeated weet-weet-weet or wee-wee-wee which sounds like a horse whinnying.
This bird breeds in small colonies in heavily vegetated areas of freshwater lakes across Europe, much of Asia down to New Guinea, and most of Africa. Most birds move to more open or coastal waters in winter, but it is only migratory in those parts of its range where the waters freeze. Outside of breeding season, it moves into more open water, occasionally even appearing on the coast in small bays.
The little grebe is an excellent swimmer and diver and pursues its fish and aquatic invertebrate prey underwater. It uses the vegetation skillfully as a hiding place.
Like all grebes, it nests at the water's edge, since its legs are set very far back and it cannot walk well. Usually four to seven eggs are laid. When the adult bird leaves the nest it usually takes care to cover the eggs with weeds. This makes it less likely to be detected by predators. The young leave the nest and can swim soon after hatching, and chicks are often carried on the backs of the swimming adults. In Bangladesh, the species breeds during the rainy season.

" I'm afraid to say the wrong thing
Criticized from every angle
And I'm afraid to lay it on the line
And selfishly I wanna hold back
Do we got the room to make mistakes?
Are we judged for everything we said?
I wanna grow but I'm afraid
And will it always be the same?
Does what I gotta say even matter?
Is life about climbing up the ladder
And can we even see lives that are shattered?
'Cause I'm really tryna silence the chatter
What have we done with society?
When everybody's getting canceled
And can't there be room for maturity?
'Cause writing 'em off is not the answer
We can't write people off
God never writes us off
Even in our darkest days, even when we least deserve it
Even when we're doing that stupid thing we wish we weren't doing
God never writes us off, ever
He's with us in our pain, He's with us in our struggle
He's with us in our bad decisions
He's with us all the time, He never writes us off
You formed the whole of me
Inward and out
I am awesomely and wonderfully created
Your creations are spectacular
You skillfully designed me
You saw the essence of me, before I was formed
Before I existed, all of my days were written in your book."

Atlantic puffins, like most seabirds appear to breed with one partner for life. They spend six months of winter out at sea and return to the same nest site in April to breed. The Farne Islands are busy with over 40,000 breeding pairs by late May.

This Cooper's Hawk and I looked at each other across my backyard while we pondered why the sparrows and finches were absent today :)
Among the bird world’s most skillful fliers, Cooper’s Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds.
Dashing through vegetation to catch birds is a dangerous lifestyle. In a study of more than 300 Cooper’s Hawk skeletons, 23 percent showed old, healed-over fractures in the bones of the chest, especially of the furcula, or wishbone.
A Cooper's Hawk captures a bird with its feet and kills it by repeated squeezing. Falcons tend to kill their prey by biting it, but Cooper’s Hawks hold their catch away from the body until it dies. They’ve even been known to drown their prey, holding a bird underwater until it stopped moving.

W9 and I walked over to watch the nature center bird feeders. We surprised the Cooper's Hawk and he surprised us.
"Among the bird world’s most skillful fliers, Cooper’s Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds. You’re most likely to see one prowling above a forest edge or field using just a few stiff wingbeats followed by a glide. With their smaller lookalike, the Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawks make for famously tricky identifications. Both species are sometimes unwanted guests at bird feeders, looking for an easy meal (but not one of sunflower seeds)." allaboutboids

In their natural environment, the mandarin duck is very shy and mostly hides in the dense vegetation of rivers and lakes. It flies very skillfully through the branches and climbs around in the branches of the trees with its sharp claws.
Mandarin ducks are very insensitive to cold. Since they also show a high degree of local loyalty, they can be kept free-living in Central Europe.

I have found my father's old external flash (made in USSR, works only on cable, not compatible with my camera, of course), and I decided to test it. Wishing you all a wonderful week!
