The Pena Palace (Portuguese: Palácio da Pena) is a Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.

Sintra is a delightful Portuguese town that is situated within the hills of the Serra de Sintra. Hidden within these pine covered hills are extravagant palaces, opulent mansions and the ruins of an ancient castle.
The variety of fascinating historic buildings and enthralling attractions, combine to form a fantastic destination. A visit to this wonderful place is a must
[You will find this and other images of mine in my new website:
Sintra is a charming village just about 20 kms from Lisbon's center. The village itself is beautiiful and, in the mountain above it, the palace and castle are also jewels that justify a visit.
What isn't so well known is its coastal area, where you can explore beautiful beaches and amazing rock formations, Along the cooast you will find excellent trekking paths to explore the area.
The spot where this shot was taken has a magnificent view that extends as far as Praia da Ursa (you can see one of its iconic seastacks) and to Cabo da Roca with its far distant lighthouse.

Palácio Nacional de Sintra is the best preserved medieval Royal Palace in Portugal. Its first historical reference dates from the 10th century during the Moorish rule. The earliest surviving part of the palace is the Royal Chapel, possibly built during the reign of King Dinis I in the early 14th century. Much of the palace dates from the times of King João I, who sponsored a major building campaign starting around 1415.
Like a picture postcard, the little city of Sintra, Portugal (UNESCO World Heritage site) charms the soul.

Although there are many places to visit in Sintra, I preferred rambling through Sintra's streets, both narrow and wide. I find the Sintra architecture very beautiful and quite peculiar, conveying a mysterious sense of dignity in spite of their old age.

Sintra's town hall built around 1154, one of the many beautiful historical architectural marvels. I am amazed at the precision and detail. The town of Sintra not to be missed when visiting Lisbon in Portugal. So many palaces to see, one day is just not enough.
Sintra, Portugal (UNESCO World Heritage Site) showcases a special style of Architecture called Manueline which is a cross between Gothic & Romantic - it flourished particularly in the 19th century.

View of Sintra .. here you can see the Paço do Concelho (the tower is all covered in azulejos), built in early 1900. Sintra is a Unesco Heritage and an unique place; about 30 minutes frm Lisbon, its fascinating not only for its beauty and unique climate, but for its Palaces and History.
A favourite holiday place of the Royal family and beloved by the British its a charming place.
