LUNAR EXCURSION MODULE SIMULATOR (LEMS)

In front of you is the very training vehicle used by Apollo astronauts to practice landing on the Moon. Suspended from a giant gantry at the NASA Langley Research Center, the LEMS recreated the special challenges of flying the arduous final approach to the Moon while standing up. The ground beneath the vehicle was configured to look exactly like the lunar surface to simulate the unfamiliar, disorienting landscape that would greet astronauts upon landing on the lunar surface. Scientists at NASA Langley based this configuration on the data they collected from the Lunar Orbiter (replica suspended near Lunar Habitat) in 1966.

Twenty-four astronauts, including Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, practiced in the Lunar Landing Research Facility.

The LEMS was suspended from a 250-foot (76-m) high gantry at the NASA Langley Research Center. Known as the Lunar Landing Research Facility, the gantry site is now a National Historic Landmark.

Langley engineers produced a simulated lunar surface with realistic lighting to make the stark landscape of the Moon familiar to the astronauts.
