This former roller mill in Wagga Wagga (330 km west of Wollongong) was built for the Murrumbidgee Co-operative Milling Co. Ltd, and covers about 5 acres (2.02 ha). It was designed by Thomas Robinson & Son Ltd and William John Monks, and was built by Charles Hardy, sen., in 1890, to produce flour by the complete gradual reduction process. The consulting engineer to the company’s board of directors was Norman Selfe.
While Wagga Wagga has had several flour mills over the years, the only mill working in 1890 was that of Henry Hayes, and there was a strong demand for a newer and larger one. The main building of the Murrumbidgee mill of several storeys, plus basement, measures 72 ft x 31 ft (21.95 m x 9.45 m). It included 79 engines running day and night to run the milling machinery.
The largest of these was a Wolfe compound steam engine installed in 1913 with cylinders of 24 in. and 14 in. (60.96 cm and 35.56 cm) with a 30 in. stroke (76.20 cm). It was fired by a multi-tube boiler and also ran a dynamo to light the building by electricity. The mill operations, however, were not converted to electricity till 1927. The silos date from 1918, when four were built, with ten more in 1927. Milling operations ceased in 1978, the mill was sold to Goodman Fielder in 1987 and closed in 2000.
