The Queen Anne style Simpson-Vance house was built in 1892. The house was built for James and Elizabeth Simpson and their large family. James was a contractor and builder in Eureka. He was also a skilled carpenter. In October of 1902, the house was sold to John M. Vance, the nephew of pioneer lumber baron John Vance. His wife Sarah lived in the house until her death in 1933 and then her daughter Etta lived there until her death in 1943. The property was then sold to Charles Hudson who was a Congregation Minister. In 1974 the State of California purchased the property as part of the right-of-way for the Eureka Highway. The project never happened and the State then sold the property to the Redwood Community Action Agency who completed a 5 year renovation in the house. The Simpson-Vance house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
The magnificent octagonal corner tower was too tall for me to fit into my camera's lens so I made an exception and took what I could get!

Teníamos buenas referencias de Simpson pero no esperábamos encontrar tal nivel de calidad en su cocina. Este es un restaurante sencillo pero pulido y suficientemente confortable situado en pleno paseo marítimo de Llafranc, con una gestión estrictamente familiar a cargo de una entusiasta pareja (Maribel en la cocina, Félix en la sala). El trato es directo, cortés y cómplice, y su cocina -la madre del cordero- se presenta sabrosa, ingeniosa, sensible, vital, estimulante y verdaderamente sorprendente. Producto de calidad en platos de inspiración casera con un marcado perfil artesano, minuciosamente preparados y presentando, a pesar de su evidente sencillez, un acabado impecable y soberbios resultados. En nuestra primera visita comimos fenomenal y salimos tan entusiasmados que la ansiedad por probar más cosas nos motivó a volver a los pocos días, confirmando así las buenas impresiones (lo que muestran las fotografías es el conjunto de ambas experiencias). Hay algún aspecto que urge revisar (la inexistente carta de vinos es el mejor ejemplo) pero lo que esta casa ofrece en el plato es pura suculencia y obliga a sumarnos a su clientela fiel y devota (pasa a favoritos desde ya). Una joya.
En la fotografía: Delicia de mermelada de tomate, gorgonzola y foie. Este plato nos lo recomendaron especialmente y, desde luego, acertaron (no hay como jugar con ventaja sabiendo que es un plato ganador). Excelsos pedazos de foie a la plancha sobre una finísima crema de gorgonzola y, en el fondo del plato, una capa de deliciosa mermelada de tomate. Se come con cuchara introduciéndola hasta el fondo para así coger un poco de todo y se reveló como una de las creaciones más emocionantes que hemos tomado en mucho tiempo. Pura exquisitez.

Billy Simpson’s House of Seafood and Steaks

This unassuming two-story brick building was constructed in 1923 as part of a four-unit row housing commercial tenants on the first floor and residents above. During the transition from segregation to the era of Home Rule, it was the place where William W. “Billy” Simpson met a demand for an upscale venue in the African American community where luminaries of politics, government, and entertainment could meet, socialize, and strategize. Billy Simpson’s opened in 1956 and became an immediate success. It attracted important figures and up-and-comers of the government, political and entertainment worlds. Stars like Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sidney Poitier would drop in when visiting and performing in Washington, but it was Simpson’s political and governmental connections that put him and his restaurant in the network of Washington’s African-American establishment. Regular guests included his personal friends Congressmen Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., and Charles Diggs; the restaurant was also a favorite refuge for
Washington’s corps of African diplomats, often not warmly welcomed at white establishments. Simpson provided moral, political and material support to the rising black political class and to the causes of the tumultuous 1960s, including the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign, and the anti-war movement. Beneficiaries included first Home Rule mayor Walter Washington and the Rev. Walter E. Fauntroy, an organizer of the 1963 march and later the District’s first congressman. Simpson kept his restaurant open round the clock to feed marchers, including Martin Luther King and Ralph Abernathy. He also participated in the strategy and financing to accomplish the defeat of South Carolina
Representative John McMillan, an unsympathetic chairman of the House District Committee. In 1968, Simpson’s restaurant served as Jesse Jackson’s headquarters during the Poor People’s Campaign. Built 1923 (Walter A. Dunigan, builder), with Tudor Revival facade alterations installed during the period of significance from 1956 to 1975. Hill County. North of Havre, Simpson was named for the Simpson brothers (Barney and Ernie), early day sheep ranchers in the area. The view is along the Wild Horse Trail (Highway 232), about 4 miles south of the Wild Horse port of entry at the Canadian border. A post office was present in Simpson from 1915 (January 21) to 1972 (January 30); Edwin Fitch was the first postmaster.
