This is one of the great sights of Egypt - a temple reconstructed when the Egyptians built the Aswan dam. UNESCO funded the removal of the temple - taken apart in a million pieces - to be moved above the man made Lake Nasser. The temple is a tribute to Ramses II. It is a breathtaking sight when first seen and should be on the bucket list for anyone travelling abroad!

Abu Simbel is a historic site comprising two massive rock-cut temples in the village of Abu Simbel, Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt, near the border with Sudan. It is located on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km (140 mi) southwest of Aswan (about 300 km (190 mi) by road). The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the 19th Dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. Their huge external rock relief figures of Ramesses II have become iconic. His wife, Nefertari, and children can be seen in smaller figures by his feet. Sculptures inside the Great Temple commemorate Ramesses II's heroic leadership at the Battle of Kadesh.
The complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968 to higher ground to avoid it being submerged by Lake Nasser, the Aswan Dam reservoir. As part of International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, an artificial hill was made from a domed structure to house the Abu Simbel Temples, under the supervision of a Polish archaeologist, Kazimierz Michałowski, from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology University of Warsaw.
The Abu Simbel complex, and other relocated temples from Nubian sites such as Philae, Amada, Wadi es-Sebua, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Nubian Monuments.

Abu Simble, Egypt
My husband and kids were being lectured by our tourguide
Picture-taking is strictly prohibited inside the temple. Many thanks to the guard who took this shot. He pantomimically expressed himself to me--gave the key and grabbed (hehehe) my camera. I was so eager to take shots then, because we were only allowed to stay for 2 hours within the vicinity of the 2 temples. We traveled more than 6 hours (back and forth) "For qualitative and quantitative tour, we need to be punctual". We could not even walk gracefully. Most of the time we did a lot of running. The MOM even needed to sit for awhile due to palpitation:-) We had our satisfying late buffet lunch at the Nile Story boat .

The Great Temple of Ramses II (Ramses the Great, ruled 1279-1213 BC) at Abu Simbel, located some 860 km (534 mi.) south of Cairo on the shore of Lake Nasser in Aswan Governorate, Egypt. The temple, and the adjacent Temple of Hathor, was constructed during Ramses II's reign on the true left bank of the Nile. Over time the temples were nearly buried in sand. In March, 1813, the Swiss geographer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt discovered the upper portion of the Great Temple extending above the sand and told the Italian explorer Giovanni Battista Belzoni of his find. In 1817 Belzoni succedded in entering the temple. By the turn of the century both temples had been fully excavated. The site faced permanent inundation due to construction of the Aswan High Dam between 1960 and 1970 some 280 km (174 mi.) downstream and UNESCO undertook to move the monuments to higher ground. Between 1964 and 1968 they were dismantled, with each piece numbered, and then reassembled some 65 m (213 ft.) higher. An artificial mountain with the contours of the original location was built and the temples were oriented exactly as they had been, thus replicating the original site. The temples at Abu Simble are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1979 as Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae.

After I collected potions and purchased a dagger in Draida Bay, I continued north towards a famous intersection.
There, I met two interesting fellows: A wily young ranger and a mysterious cloaked man. I held my wand tightly and prepared my mind in case the man attempted to rob me of my loot.
Fortunately, he did not attack me.
The ranger said he slept in trees for five nights because he was afraid of local werewolves. He visited the intersection to find wandering adventurers who could aid him in his journey to a village.
The cloaked man said he came to the intersection to look for clues needed to find buried treasure in a nearby cavern, along with "borrowing" any scattered items he found.
Any of the two paths I take could lead me on an adventure of a lifetime.

This image was capture at Abu Simbel in Egypt back in Feb. 2006 with a Panasonic FZ20.
We had to take a very early morning plane ride from Asswan followed by a bus ride to get to Abu Simbel. When you arrive there you just see a big hill.
You follow the path around the hill and wham there it is. A huge space with temples that are really big. All buses and tourist stuff are outside hidden behind that temple mountain. So you really get to enjoy the space without all that interfering.
Is an amazing thing the Egyptian people did preserving this wonderful monument.
The camera, which usually does its best shots with well lit subjects, had a very hard time with the light and stone combination in Egypt.
The light was so bright and the stones so red or golden it seemed hard for the camera to grab the colors of the temples and monuments well. At least that was my experience.
