Vickers-Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk.IXc (G-IRTY), "Silver Spitfire - The Longest Flight". Duxford, 3rd July 2019.
This is an old shot but I have posted today inspired by the news today of The Silver Spitfire -
Two pilots have set off on a pioneering quest to circumnavigate the globe in an original Spitfire.
Steve Boultbee Brooks and Matt Jones plan to cover a distance of 27,000 miles in the Second World War aircraft, which has been fully restored.
At 13:30 BST on Monday, the project, named 'Silver Spitfire - The Longest Flight', set off from Goodwood aerodrome, in West Sussex.
It is the base of Boultbee Flight Academy, the first-ever school for Spitfire pilots.
The pair will stop off at 100 locations in 30 countries during the five-month journey.
They will first head to Scotland, then westbound to places including the US, Canada, Japan, Russia and India and back to Britain.
The single-seated Mk IX Spitfire, originally built in 1943, will be followed by a chase plane for safety.
Speaking ahead of take-off, Mr Jones told reporters:
"I'm a bit nervous but excited to get going. It's been a long time in planning and we've put a lot of work into this airplane."
Various actors, presenters and F1 driver David Coulthard were reportedly in attendance for the departure.
The plane fought in the Second World War, and served on 51 sorties.
This Spitfire however is not the Silver Spitfire but one I saw at a day at Headcorn when I went up in the Dove flying over Leeds Castle .
