We spent the morning touring Topkapi Palace, one of the must see sights in Istanbul. It was fairly crowded but we were able to escape the crowds and have sections on our own for a good bit. The Harem was the highlight of the visit. The architecture was awesome. Unlike other palaces, Topkapi is a series of various buildings, not one big structure.

We visited Topkapi in early April 2022.

Another invisible man

If you're like me, it's hard to get moving in the morning before you've had your morning coffee. You need that jolt of caffeine to get the cobwebs out. Sometimes caffienated soft drinks can be substituted in a pinch, but who wants to drink 3-4 cans of soda in the morning to equal one cup of coffee? It's just too dilute, not to mention the complete lack of the sensual steamy goodness of a nice hot cup of coffee.

For me, nothing beats coffee, but there are alternatives. As I said, soda is generally easy to come by. In addition, many "energy drinks" on the market have caffeine levels approaching coffee. What does a caffeine addict do, however, when carrying or consuming drinks is not practical? A variety of caffienated candies have come onto the market for just that reason. I tried my first caffienated candy (excluding chocolate) several years ago. I was in the check out line in a book store when I spied a dapper looking little tin of mints, similar in size to an altoids tin. It had a penguin on the front, with white and yellow stripes bursting radially from the penguin's location at the center of the hinged lid. As a coffee user and and an altoid user, I was excited by the combination. I soon found, however, that the levels of caffeine were much too low to get the kind of lift I was looking for without constant mint-sucking.

Fast forward to several days ago. I was in a computer super-center waiting for a friend who was picking up some "free with rebate" merchandise. Next to the register was a display of small blue tins with the name "Bawls" printed on the front. It's a name that is well known in geek circles as a strong pick-me-up soft drink. The candy on the shelf advertized itself as "highly caffeinated", so I decided to give it a try. The "mints" which actually tasted more like sweet tarts, were slightly fizzy. They were tasty, but I suspected that the "highly caffeinated" claim was a little exaggerated.

Once again, a quick web search revealed all the answers. The penguin mints, whose potency I had been less than impressed with actually contained 7mg of caffeine per piece, compared with 5mg per candy in the bawls mints. The bawls mints, however, had a flavor that may be more conducive to chain-eating.

So what? My conclusion is that these caffeinated candies are OK for actual, caffeine intake, but only if eaten in large numbers. I suppose they are also a neat novelty, and the "highly caffeinated" claim enhances the placebo effect. As an alternative, however, for a potent "dry" caffeine source try chocolate covered espresso beans. Do be careful, though. Only you are responsible for what you put into your body and what happens when you do. It is much too easy to eat too many of these tasty treats for your own good, as I found out after a visit to Hershey's Chocolate World. Be safe, and enjoy.

On Sunday, Sept. 1, this little creature walked through the common property outside my wall.

Took this through screening and from rather far away - wan't even going to try to go outside - although I'm told they don't usually bother humans - I wasn't taking any chances.

This sculpture was modeled in 1906-1907, but was not cast in bronze until 1988. Taft based the idea for his sculpture on the play "Les Aveugles" (the Blind) by the Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck. In the play, written in 1890, a group of twelve adults, deprived of their eyesight, are left on an abandoned island. Taft wrote:

"As the drama progresses and gloom settles over all, the figures are drawn together for mutual protection. they cling to each other in expectancy and fear. The group becomes unified but it is still permeated with that awful agony of suspense, the fear of the Unseen. Then the young girl with the faith of second-sight recognizes in the sob of a child a promise of salvation: 'The child sees; the child will lead us,' she cries exultingly, and snatching the little one from its mad mother's arms, lifts it high to find the guiding gleam which must be somewhere on the horizon. This is the artist's moment. It is the symbol of hope that is worthy of eternalization, of that hope that springs eternal in the human breast; the confidence and joyousness of youth."

I met these guys last year while i was shooting at Kirklees Party in the park which is a free music festival run by my local council . They did pretty well from performing last year getting air play on a lot of the local radio stations etc, so well that they were asked to perform again this year on the main act line up! Not long after this years festival they mailed me asking if id be interested in a shoot. They had managed to get a slot playing at the Batley Frontier (Variety). They wanted live and promos. I had to book the night off work, but it was well worth it.

Comments and critique always welcome.

Second prototype archery sight developed by Rein-o-King Industries under the company name TAS or Tactical Archery Systems. This is a revolutionary bow sight that uses reflex technology to project the pins onto a lens and by doing so gives the user point of impact tracking which will give the shooter instant feedback to weather he/she is having any bow torque or changes in anchor point. This sight can also eliminate the need for a peep sight or alows the shooter to look around the peep if there is any peep turn during full draw. Look for this sight to be on the market by next archery season.

Dead Horse Point State Park is perhaps Utah's most spectacular state park. Dead Horse Point is a promontory of stone surrounded by steep cliffs near Moab, Utah. The overlook at Dead Horse Point is 6,000 feet above sea level. Two thousand feet below, the Colorado River winds its way from the continental divide in Colorado to the Gulf of California, a distance of 1,400 miles.

From the overlook, canyon erosion may be viewed on a grand scale. This erosion process has taken approximately 150 million years. Much of it is caused by the river slicing down into the earth's crust as land is forced upward. These powerful forces are still sculpting the fantastic shapes of the precipitous bluffs and towering spires.

Before the turn of the century, mustang herds ran wild on the mesas near Dead Horse Point. The unique promontory provided a natural corral into which the horses were driven by cowboys. The only escape was through a narrow, 30-yard neck of land controlled by fencing. Mustangs were then roped and broken, with the better ones being kept for personal use or sold to eastern markets. Unwanted culls of "broomtails" were left behind to find their way off the Point.

According to one legend, a band of broomtails was left corralled on the Point. The gate was supposedly left open so the horses could return to the open range. For some unknown reason, the mustangs remained on the Point. There they died of thirst within sight of the Colorado River, 2,000 feet below.
