Standing a few meters from the earlier photo now this second set of wall stones can be seen in rows along the axis line. By comparison to this volume of stone and the dimension of wall that it comprised, there must be 10x as much stone elsewhere when the outer moat and the rest of this inner moat were demolished after the 1867 handover from feudal lord to the newly created city government. Without researching, nobody seems to know of a place those other big stones were transported. The same question could be posed for the much, much bigger castle at Fukui-city. Only the inner moat is still filled with water and the grounds hold the prefectural offices for Fukui-ken. Then there is the installation of Kanazawa castle and, biggest of all, the traces of the Edo castle in the middle of the city of Tokyo..
The economics of castle building lie at the intersection of several historical factors. In the Warring Clans period (Senkoku period) of late 1400 to late 1500 most forts were defensive locations atop nearby mountains for hasty refuge in times of strife. Those were not meant as comfortable residences or visible statements of authority like the ones built early in the feudal years as the stability was being tested and the system of alternate year residence in Tokyo (sankin kotae) was being developed.
In contrast to the mountain refuges, the flatland castles were large and well equipped with comforts and the ability to withstand sieges because of water supply and food stores. They were a visual statement of power and authority to people of all stations of life, as well as functional defensive structures. They could only be built or approved in design when the central government feared no uprising or threat to nationally consolidated governance. So probably the phase of castle-building only lasted 50 or 100 years, after which remodeling might occur, but there was no need to quarry more stone or fill the moats in new locations. A few wealthy merchants or aspiring retainers perhaps were permitted to fortify their personal residences with gatehouses and walls, as well as dual-purpose sunken fields that could be readily filled with water from nearby flowing sources to act like a moat.

Went to Le Claire, IA last weekend. Tried to get some eagle shots, and also took a walk into town. We were looking into the store window of an old fashioned diner, and admiring the soda fountain, and the owner was on his way out the door and invited us in. It had the neatest tin ceiling with a raised pattern on it. He said that his parents bought this 65 years ago to the day (it was valentine's day). It didn't look like much had changed inside since those 65 years. He told us to hang out at Sneaky Pete's, which also had a tin ceiling and wonderful ambiance.
When he saw my camera and heard I was trying to get eagle shots he told me the story of a local nature photographer that filled a dead carp with air and floated it out into the dam on some string. That allowed him to get a lot of great action shots. I love small towns! The locals are always willing to tell you stories if you show an interest and you can learn a lot.
First experiments with dippold pinhole cam. Came out great :)

350 ml water at 20°
6 teaspoons of instant coffee (brand "Carrefour, Strong")
4 spoons of washing soda (crystals, could not find the powder)
1/4 teaspoon Vitamin-C powder
developped for about 12 min, rinced 3 times with water and fixed with ilford fixer.

During a tour of Kings Canyon near Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia, I happen upon the great fortune of meeting Dave, tour guide for Emu Run Tours. As luck would have it, I was the only one for the tour and the 12 hours we spent together were fulled full of interesting conversation. Dave is a good mate!
