Reminiscing about our summer holiday to Cornwall last year, and looking forward to our return in Easter. This is Stephen, the infamous seagull that we encountered. Bold as brass, and steals food from people’s hands. He is definitely the ring leader. There was a video online in 2018 that featured a seagull casually walking into a shop regularly, and stealing bags of crisps. This happened in Cornwall, I am 99.9% certain Stephen was the shoplifter in the video. 😂😂

'Doc's Leather', is a Toronto institution since 1969, so I've decided to give the photo a little bit of vintage treatment. Doc Von Lichtenberg, the owner, is quite a character himself. One year ago he got fed-up with robberies and shoplifters and was fighting with two criminals half his age to get his merchandise back. He was 64 at the time, but was successful. Coincidentally, I took a photo of Patrick S, Toronto jazz saxophonist, walking with a friend. I did not even realize it at the time.

This little lane provides one of the entrances to Mevagissey's inner harbour, which is behind the camera. We shall never forget it because when we went into The Leather Shop a year or two ago our little Yorkie helped herself to a little stuffed toy sheep. Well, it was in a basket on the floor that was full of them and she must have thought they could spare one. It was only after we left the shop that we realised what she had got. So we had to go back and pay for it. They said she was the loveliest shoplifter they had ever had!

The woman yawned as she turned over the page. I glanced at the cover. Julian Barnes. I’d have yawned too. I’m not sure how many people in Cornwall read Julian Barnes. I tried once and didn’t make it past the first page. Too cerebral for my tiny brain I’m afraid. He was on the news recently. Just turned eighty. He doesn’t like aimless pastiches and artless cliches, so please don’t invite him to read anything from my feed if you happen to know him, will you? But this wasn't Cornwall; we were somewhere in Central London, riding on the tube, where people either stare intently at their mobile phones or bury themselves in a book. Here, people like us stand out like big red farmers’ thumbs on the ends of soft white office hands. Hayseeds from the provinces, frowning at the tube map above the doors, pointing excitedly at the poster advertising the show we're going to see tonight, and counting the number of stops until our station. “Did you tap in? Good. Don’t forget to tap out again when we get to Embankment. Even if the gates are open. Only four stations to go!”

It’s not just the general expressions of awed wonder at being in an enormous city that mark us out. It’s what we’re wearing. While the people on their phones or in their books wear smart suits and sport flawless coiffures, we’re dressed for the outdoors. Waterproof jackets and rucksacks so that we can gawp at the sights whether it’s raining or not. The locals carry umbrellas. Try opening an umbrella where we live and it’s inside out and halfway to Exeter on the first passing gust of wind. And that rucksack can invite unwanted attention too. Ali tried to browse the clothes rails of one well known retailer while I pottered around outside at Canary Wharf. It wasn’t long before she gave up and found a bench to sit on. “The security team kept following me around the shop,” she complained. “They obviously thought I was up to no good.” Everywhere you go in London there are security guards, freshly graduated and brandishing their diplomas from the Greater London Academy of Thuggery and Aggravated Headlocks. Someone once told us that by the year 2050 half the population would be Elvis impersonators. I beg to disagree. By 2040 three quarters of us will be persecuting innocent souls for daring to need a bag in which to carry their belongings around Canary Wharf, while occasionally catching a real shoplifter or two in the process. Most of the remaining twenty-five percent may well be Elvis impersonators though.

On the second morning at the Premier Inn, one pair on the other side of the room were brainstorming. An older man of around forty-five and a brightly enthusiastic young woman in her mid-twenties, yet to be ground down by life, the universe and a creeping sense of disillusionment. Huddled over laptops at the breakfast table. Lofty ideas and cunning plans lay beside the toast rack as they plotted out a big day ahead. All I had to think about is whether I could manage a third sausage from the buffet. Sounds like an easy enough decision? Normally it's a straightforward one, but not when you know there's a chaos element at play and Ali is almost certainly going to start dumping excess food on your plate when she realises she overloaded hers. By the time I'd had this notion and let my nose drift in the general direction of the buffet counter, a neatly cut half of a vegetarian sausage had magically appeared next to the two that were already nestling beside a splat of brown sauce on my plate.

What is good to know is that all of these highly capable and industrious pace setters are oiling the national grindstone here in the city, piling up the profits to pay the dividends on our pension funds so that we can blunder about in gaudy waterproofs without having to think about work anymore. Here in the Square Mile, we were probably rubbing shoulders with people who earned more money this morning than we did over an entire working lifetime. Combined. All of those suited men standing outside the Irish pub on the corner, guffawing noisily over freshly poured pints and drawing on cigarettes? They probably just added the GDP of a small central American country to the CEO’s annual performance bonus in between elevenses and their lunchtime beers.

Another thing that takes a while to get used to is people strolling along, chattering away to themselves with not the remotest sign of self consciousness. At least that’s what your brain tells you they’re doing until you spot the white earbuds and realise they’re on the phone to someone, brokering a deal. “Buy! No, sell! Buy again! Hold!” Another plc sinks or swims somewhere across the globe. We even watched a Deliveroo guy on his moped, puttering along Lloyds Avenue as he chattered away on his bluetooth, a motorcycle helmet wobbling unconvincingly on top of his headphones. He probably wasn’t about to seal a merger with a blue chip tech giant, or launch a takeover bid for a Cayman Island though; more likely he was just double checking the delivery address for the smashed avocado on rye. Somewhere, someone in a Jermyn Street suit needed a sandwich in order to keep the wheels of commerce in motion and add another few millions to the national balance sheet, while the outsiders strolled past without a care in the world, innocently gazing up at the towers in the sky and wondering where the nearest tube station was.
