Ori Nui Shibori Kimono
Japan, 20th century
"Shibori (しぼり/絞り, from the verb root "shiboru" – "to wring, squeeze or press" is a Japanese manual tie-dyeing technique, which produces a number of different patterns on fabric."

As the title of the photo says, this is a simple and ordinary dust cloth, which I used at home when I helped to clean the house with my parents.
My flatmate always complains that I tend to ruin the British dust clothes because I wring them out very hard. It is true that I am really good at wringing out clothes until I make them dry by doing so. I would like to stress the fact that the quality of the British dust clothes is disappointing. So, in order to avoid further complains from my flatmate, I asked my mum to make them for me. I can wring them as strong as I want and they would last much longer than the British ones.
Although many people now know about the Japanese culture, I am wondering how many of them have ever heard about SHIBORI 絞り(noun, squeezing, as verb SHIBORU) which is, from my point of view, a part of our culture and even arts.
For instance, in KIMONO, there is a certain way to make the fabric, [SHIBORI]. As far as I know, I have not come across the similar way to create the fabric as SHIBORI in KIMONO.
For non-Japanese, it is hard to say a Japanese word properly. Please be careful, [SHIBARI, 縛り] means completely different.
This flower is Camellia sasanqua cv. Shiboriegao. The Japanese word "Shiboriegao" is composed of two words. "Shibori" ("Shiboru") means "squeeze", and "Egao" means "smile", so I think "Shiboriegao" means "squeezing simle" or so. Can you image such a smile?
