THE ANIMAL CRUSADE

One day all the sties and burrows opened

And out came the cave-bear the mammoth the seafaring

cormorant, that poetic diving bird, the white-headed vulture

the rock-goat from the mountains, the sea unicorn

You could see by their snouts that they meant business

You could hear by their flapping wings and their burr

They had thrown off their humility, cast down their yoke

once imposed by Adam’s secretive hero

the one with the garden

They were, to cut a long story short, fed up

And the morals of the shotgun had been cast off

the flayed skin of flight had faded

The viper walked tall and the swine wore polaroid glasses

that lent him pleasant looks. The beavers

gnawed down telegraph poles and so cut off any form of communication

Predictably enough, the lion led the way black black

as black gold and gold-coloured as deep black

It was a magnificent procession, blinding to the eye

At the back the unicorn reported as missing, the dodo the passenger pigeon

as well as various viruses and the elated spermatozoids

So the holy animals

travelled the holy world

And do you know how or why?

Oh no, they just went travelling, they didn’t have a flag!

Sometimes ripped up laws out of sheer happiness

or bled a city dry

Now and then trampled on a Jesus

or struck down a prophet or a princess

They were beginning to get tired

Haste no longer necessary

The one day’s deities left the fire

A fig is, in fact, not a fruit but a cluster of inverted flowers known as a syncomium.

Figs are part of the mulberry family.

Figs contain a milky sap called latex that can cause major skin irritation.

Fig skin is edible; just twist off the stem and tuck in. If you don’t like the texture of the skin, gently peel it away with your fingers, starting from where you removed the stem.

According to legend, Buddha achieved enlightenment under the bodhi tree, a sacred fig tree.

Figs are very labour intensive to harvest: they bruise very easily and must be picked daily by hand.

Figs contain ficinen, a digestive enzyme that digests proteins and can be used to tenderise meat.

Most commercial figs are grown in Spain, Italy, Turkey, the Middle East, Iran, Greece, Portugal, USA, North Africa and South Africa.

This rock holds significance in local legend. It is said that Trøllkonufingur is the finger of a large witch who arrived on the Faroe Islands to attempt to throw them northwards to Iceland. The legend holds that she was unsuccessful in this mission, instead reaching the sea by Vágar and turning into stone from the power of the sun. Due to her sheer size, it is said that she fell backwards into the ocean, with only her finger sticking out of the water. That pointed appendage became what is now known as the Trøllkonufingur.

Another image of the beautiful Christine falls from Mt Rainier National Park. In my earlier posts about our visit to the park, I have talked about how our trip to the park coincided with a storm. The storm pretty much covered the entire park in clouds, and the whole time we were there, we couldn’t even seethe main attraction of the park, Mt Rainier itself. We were not discouraged, though and the reason for our bright outlook was the sheer number of beautiful waterfalls around the park.

The stormy overcast conditions were perfect for waterfall photography. Christine Falls, located on the eastern side of the park, and with such a beautiful setting, we could not afford not to visit the waterfall. While the scene at Christine falls is gorgeous, it’s the only composition you can make here as I am not sure getting to the fall's base is even possible. After taking the standard composition, I tried some variations in attempting to frame the waterfall with a tree near the viewing platform. I intended to give a certain depth to the scene. The technical details are pretty straight forward. I used a polarizing filter and a three-stop ND filter to slow the shutter speed and cut down the foliage glare.

August 21st 2024 has found me in the West Virginia coal country, staring right at CSX AC44CW 529 and 3 other big GE's hammering through the inside of Piney Tunnel No.1 near Beckley, West Virginia.

Piney Tunnel No.1 is a formidable place on the former C&O Piney Creek Sub, hosting the crest of a 1.3% grade within the confines between each portal. It is not much in the way of a long tunnel, measuring in at only 738 feet long, but is no less a mightily impressive piece of engineering to be in awe of. Just to think of the sheer amount of effort it had taken to be able to blast through an entire hillside of solid rock with far more primitive tools and technology is incredible.

As the train pokes out of the tunnel a call to the dispatcher at Jacksonville is made, inquiring on the availability of track space in Quinnimont for their 82 loads of coal from Arch Resource's Beckley-Pocahontas Mine. A reply from the dispatcher tells them, there is no room for it in Quinnimont on these day, and it is up to their discretion on what they would like to do at this point in regards to tying down the train. A quick conversation amongst the head end crew and the pusher crew decides that they will happily take the early quit. The call is made to the dispatcher that they are tying the train down on the main at nearby Raleigh Yard.

Instead of bringing the train back down to the New River Gorge outside of Prince, it will have to wait for another day and another crew to do the work of bringing the coal loads down off of the mountain for yarding. Quinnimont is still 14 miles away and 857 feet lower in elevation, an average drop of 61 feet (1.63% gradient) per mile.

The sheer size and scope of this old Victorian mansion makes it difficult to get a handle on photographically. I've been here before and it's literally overwhelming to be in the presence of this house. So many architectural details compete for the eye's attention, coupled with the sheer enormity of the place. Intuition brought me back here yesterday, on a bleak and raw day. My senses were sharpened by the cold. I focused on an old wrought iron sign bracket in the side yard, and allowed the house to recede a bit into the background. I crouched low to enhance the sense of the house looming and brooding. The overall atmosphere could not have been better.

a soft and silky scarf to add that little extra to any outfit.

I have taken about a dozen of images of this photogenic fabric - each one beautiful and unique... a difficult choice to pick one for MM. I ended up adding this one to the Macro Monday pool because of it's magnified detail - i.e. a true macro.

The White River, on Mt. Hoods southern flank, was the location of a pyroclastic-flow that occurred during the Old Maid eruptive period. This eruption occurred during the late 18th century, prior to Lewis and Clark's arrival. Although the White river is not visible in this image, it was easily heard - being situated at the bottom of the sheer erosion cliff about 10 ft. to the right of the camera.

It may still be spring, but the summer weather has arrived in Australia, and that means today's theme: ice creams. Three candid shots of people enjoying an ice cream. I'm reliably informed that a balanced diet is an ice cream in each hand.

Sexy. That's the only way to describe shooting behind the sheer curtain of this waterfall into the lush, drippingly green Garden of Eden spread out before her. I spent the good part of a morning here all by myself.
