Sharp-tailed Grouse taken at Glacial Ridge NWR, Polk County, near Crookston, Mn.

This sharp-tailed snake (Contia tenuis) was found in one of my plots in Mill Hill Regional Park in Langford. One of the rarest snakes in Canada and under threat of extinction due to habitat loss from development, these elusive critters, about the size of a pencil, spend most of their time underground and are almost never seen on the surface. However, this one was casually nestled down in the moss by a rock when I found it. This sighting documents an entirely new location for this species so I was excited to tell my friend Christian, who researches these snakes, about it.

Finally got a picture of this guy! He's been hanging out in my backyard all winter!

I don't care what the DJ said, I'm still sure E was the cutest baby there.

My friend K writes "That photo makes me think of a tiny leader of industry (or mob boss, if you prefer) with his very imposing bodyguard. Evan looks like he's about to make a speech that I'd better listen to :)"

Big excitement this morning: We had a female sharp-shinned hawk in the net. Fascinating to watch Kim band this impressive bird.
