I don't mind a few interruptions when I am gardening if that means I can get good photos of birds. After pruning roses I walked around the corner of my house and this bird flew out of a Golden Currant shrub chasing a sparrow. that it did not catch. It landed in this willow tree. I watched it for about half hour before it tried again to make a kill. It missed again and landed in the far side of the same tree. I went back to my yard work and for the next hour or more it sat there, even though there were American Goldfinches, House Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Juncos in the same tree and on the ground. I went in the house to eat lunch, checked again and found this bird in the same place. Back in the house I noticed California Quail and all of the above mentioned birds out my back window. I turned away from watching for about a minute, turned around and looked out my window, and saw this hawk on the ground, then in my apricot tree with no prey, so it missed a 3rd time. I went out the front door walked around the corner of my house and got a couple more photos. I'm not sure why because I ended up with slightly over 50 shots. Sometimes it would be better if birds flew away so I didn't take so many photos that look almost identical. I will upload a couple of more latter. IMG_4059

[This photo is for C. London's 52 Weeks of Photography Challenge - www.clondon.me/blog/52weeks0]

For this week, I set out to find a scene with a lot of contrast and sharp lines. I wanted to do a long exposure shot that would hopefully maximize image quality. The challenge was to produce a clean, sharp, low noise photo, and I think this satisfies that goal.

I don't know what exactly I was hoping for, but I like this little scene down the street from home.

I took a stroll along the canal, it had been dry and sunny all day, but half way through my ambling the skies opened and camera and I became rather wet!! anyway, the rain was short lived and the sky delivered this bust of colour just before nightfall. The Sharpness Canal connects Gloucester to Sharpness, allowing boats to bypass a treacherous tidal stretch of the River Severn. The structure in the foreground is part of the swing bridge mechanism.

special thanks to my friend Scripter81 for his advice

A tiny hawk that appears in a blur of motion—and often disappears in a flurry of feathers. That’s the Sharp-shinned Hawk, the smallest hawk in North America and a daring, acrobatic flier. This juvenile staked out a perfect ambush spot close to feeders in our backyard.

I had a wonderful road trip with two friends recently. We went to Southern Saskatchewan where I saw a few lifers including an Upland Sandpiper.

I have decided to sprinkle these photos in with my others as I don't think I will ever get caught up lol.

Thanks for your views and comments! They are all greatly appreciated!

The old heron looking so sharp,,,standing allways so in good position.....

I'm still watching a neighbors crab apple tree for waxwings, but a flock of Sharp Tail Grouse are still doing their best to eat all the berries before the trees are found by the waxwings.

Way overhead above Willband Creek Park is a Sharp-shinned Hawk.

Dartmoor sunset

I'm not sure of the final outcome, whether he was successful or not, but this Sharpie was perched on the same branch for over two hours in the backyard looking for a meal. (Taken through window)

I had a pretty modest ISO going since I had been shooting lightning in a storm for quite awhile, and was pretty dialed in on it all. Then this mega blast struck Sharp Top and just blew out everything. It lit up the entire photo brighter than daytime. I took the settings way down and was able to bring out the scene, but the color was so mangled I just made it b & w.

The sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) is famed for its elaborate courtship display, which is imitated by Native Americans during their traditional dances. The short tail has elongated central feathers, giving the tail a pointed or ‘sharp’ appearance.

Looking close... on Friday!

Sharp-shinned Hawk. He landed on one of the perches in my feeding area... maybe 15 feet away. I almost ... well, no, I did completely freak out. Beautiful bird and my first chance to photograph a bird of prey. After landing he just calmly looked around for some dinner, maybe 40 seconds and then flew away. I must say, he is welcome back anytime!! I was stunned by his presence and keep replaying the moment in my mind because it did not seem real. I think this visit made my year!!

This is an image of an iris in my garden, taken in May. We don’t have many irises but last year we bought some bulbs of this type and planted them in a pot. They’re very pretty.

I've taken the photo from above with a very shallow depth of focus on the fall petal to render it as an abstract mainly about colour and curves.

This is one for the Wednesday Macro group. One of the nice things about the genre is you get to play with familiar sights in more puzzling and intriguing ways. I love macros that others do where I have to guess what they are…

The usual culprits were used in the processing (Capture One then Affinity with Nik Color Efex, the latter for vignettes, selective local contrast and tonal management. Topaz AI DeNoise played a part and that tends to be the main tool I use for reducing grain after sharpening).

I seem to have taken a lot of flowers this year. I’ll have to process some and share them when I have a moment.

I hope you are having a good summer!

Thanks for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Mittwochsmakro :)

Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) male performs on the "lek" or "dancing ground" in defence of its territory on the prairie landscape near the Great Sandhills south of Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Fortunately the landscape is groomed by a herd of beef cattle which keep it in a nice state for photographing the birds on the grass cover.

While it was tipping down with rain I noticed one of NCT’s driver training Omnidekkas in Beeston Interchange, but by the time I’d got over there it was long gone. However, I was just in time to see a Sharpes bus that had also unusually driven through the interchange, and get my camera ready in time for when it looped back around onto Middle Street.

Sharpes ex-Dublin B7TL ALX400 MIB 658 is seen in Beeston on 27.5.25

Immediately after I made for the shelter and caught a 36 home, from which I glimpsed the driver trainer again on Queens Road through the misted up, rain soaked windows. It was during the time High Road was shut and 36, indigo etc were diverting.

Versute Sharpshooter (Graphocephala versuta) - Power-cut west of Bethany Lane, Ellicott City, Maryland

A colorful, tiny little, hoppy guy.

And yes it is a "sharpshooter".

Not so much that it shoots things,

but more like a "sharp dressed man" kinda sharp,

that "shoots" from one leaf to the next when it hops.
