"Due to the shrike's small size in proportion to the size of its prey, it must rely on specialized adaptations to facilitate its hunting. ... Larger prey are subjected to impaling, in which they are pushed down into a sharp projection, such as a thorn or barbed wire."

Macro of this Bosen Thistle.

Photographed in my back yard. I was ready for him. I expected him because I have seen him several times recently and Saturday he landed on my birdbath. He arrived a little latter Sunday morning but may have been confused about the time because we went from daylight saving time to pacific standard time. I say this as if the bird knows the time. Maybe he slept in because it was snowing most of the night and early morning. He tried for a quail, junco, and sparrow breakfast but as far as I know he failed. I enjoyed watching him for about 15 minutes while he sat from 15-30 feet from me between trying to catch a sparrow that was in a shrub next to him. He flew around the shrub and even jumped at it 4 or 5 times which was fun to watch. IMG_6342

I like Sharp Tail Grouse, but I'm ready for a bit of diversity!

Caught in a moment of stillness within the vibrant tableau of Villa Verde, on the outskirts of Celaque National Park in Gracias, Lempira, the Azure-crowned Hummingbird, Saucerottia cyanocephala, became the subject of my latest photograph. This Central American exclusive, with its regal blue crown and delicate dusting of pollen, is a living emblem of the region's ecological narrative. The image captures the bird in profile, its beak a testament to its role as a pollinator within its habitat, the dynamic interplay of life and growth in Honduras.

From the perspective of a photographer, the shot was about honoring the bird's natural poise, contrasting its vivid colors against the soft, green backdrop without losing the subject into the foliage. The challenge was to wait for that split-second pause, balancing a shallow depth of field with the need for sharp detail, all while ensuring the lighting captured the sparkle in its feathers and the subtle textures of its environment. This photograph isn’t just a static image; it’s a slice of life, a breath between beats in the heart of the forest.

I have been playing around with a cheap Chinese CCTV lens - it's not sharp but it does produce a nice bokeh

Macro Mondays, Triangle

A surprise and ominous visitor to the little pond, this sharp-shinned hawk's (Accipiter striatus) (I think... I still don't have a positive ID) fly-bys and perching in shaded and secluded cover beside the pond drove all smaller birds to silence and into hiding for a couple of days while he was around.

Robins were last to vacate the pond, after first shouting raucously to all that they were unhappy about something.

While I was disappointed that all the songbirds disappeared, it was fascinating to see this mighty little raptor.

Pretty sure this is a sharp-shinned hawk Accipiter striatus, just guessing. Another possibility might be a Merlin, though this bird's head is not quite shaped right, nor does it have any 'eyebrow' mark, as a merlin might (but not always) have.

I just don't see either of them often enough to know.

This little (crow size) raptor has been hanging around my little pond for several days, swooping rapidly from under cover likely grabbing little songbirds.

We first noticed the flickers completely disappeared from our backyard, including the mating pair, as well as an unusual disapperance and silence for long stretches of time, from other songbirds.

Perhaps the result of this bird taking the opportunity to ambush feed on the numerous little songbirds that have arrived.

This is probably the most common hawk in North America. If you’ve got sharp eyes, you’ll see several individuals on almost any long car ride, anywhere. Red-tailed Hawks soar above open fields, slowly turning circles on their broad, rounded wings. Other times you’ll see them atop telephone poles, eyes fixed on the ground to catch the movements of a vole or a rabbit.

A sudden scurrying of sparrows coupled with chickadee alarm calls betrayed this hunter. Lake St. Clair.

I heard this hunter take the bird in the sky as i was leaving work...pulled out of my lot, and seen this in the neighboring businesses yard

Wishing you all a very Happy & Healthy New Year!

Looks to be a young hawk, a bit lost and confused. Best wishes for a lovely day everyone!

It wasn't speed that Hiawatha was used to but Lake States train 12 is blowing past the boarded up depot in an hurry on August 8, 1987 at Rudyard. The 187 and 4232 have 31 cars of mainly newsprint and are kicking along at slightly over the authorized 40mph on the Soo Sub. In a couple hundred feet the train will slam over the Pine River bridge and lean into the sharp curve at the west end of the bridge while the hogger lays on the horn for the Highway 40 crossing. I'm getting all nostalgic but I sure miss the SOO, even this version of it. Hard to believe this was 31 years ago.

LI NY I was surprised when this hawk stayed on a nearby branch to be photographed.

On April 29th I started my day at 2:45 am. I drove with three friends to a lek in Southern Alberta. We had to be in the blind by 5 am. It sure took a long time before there was enough light to take photos. We could hear the grouse. They were making many sounds and e could see their outlines in the dark. It was another great day. The last time I was out there was two years ago.

I was using a brand new camera so I had many photos to delete and of course far too many photos over all. Most photos were only cropped. I didn't adjust any colors. Some photos are not even cropped.

Thanks for your visits and comments. They are all greatly appreciated!

Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. Captured up close, I loved the sharp focus of this woman looking down the street and was so pleased to get some sharp focus of my own for the image.

This is the same woman I captured 'Turning Around' here flic.kr/p/MHyk6A. She had such a strikingly beautiful profile but I was so pleased to, unusually for me, click the shutter again when she turned around. Enjoy!

Organ Mountains in New Mexico. I took this shot with an Olympus OM-1 film camera.

Judging by its size and the skinny legs, I'm guessing a Sharpie! Feel free to correct me if you think otherwise.
