Not to be confused with Ricky Ricardo's wife, Guadalupe's Lucy is a female adult white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), who is a regular visitor to the island during the autumn months. As you can see in this photo, Lucy's upper caudal fin (tail) is deformed (possibly as the result of a bite from another white shark). The injury has caused Lucy to have a very unique style of swimming. However, it hasn't slowed her down or inhibited her ability to hunt, and Lucy maintains a very healthy weight despite her deformed caudal fin.
I saw this on my way to work today. I've never seen anything like it before.

If we don't see a white shark while in the water, that's GOOD. I still would love to actually see one of our summer resident great white sharks while safely high up on shore!
So whether to appease her spirit to ward off close encounters while in the water, or to give us a glimpse while we're on land, or just because it's FUN, we create this edible effigy.

At the Piedras Blancas NES Rookery near San Simeon along the Central Coast of California we often see seals injured by shark bites, almost always White Shark attacks (Carcharodon carcharias). This young male has sustained an attack on his left lip and neck, and the 2 prior images show the bite extending to the right face, involving the medial canthus but apparently sparing the globe. He is in the fortunate 20% or so of seals to reach age 5-6--male sexual maturity. Whether his injuries will prevent him from attaining the bulk he will need to be an alpha male (1%) or even mating (<2% of males ever mate) remains to be seen. But, so far, he's shown he's a survivor!
This young adult female has initially survived a recent White Shark bite and beached at the Piedras Blancas Rookery to birth her pup. She appears otherwise healthy and may indeed provide the 28 or so days of milk before her pup is weaned. The bite injury has damaged her mandible with loss of her left canine, lacerated the length of her cheek and neck, and left a large flap of non-viable skin and blubber partially attached at her left neck/shoulder region. Though deep into blubber, the bite may not have reached her musculature. Her deep shunting of blood to retain heat in cold water prevented exsanguination at sea--the shark's hunting strategy. These are amazingly resilient, tough animals; scars of severe but survived shark attacks are frequently seen on rookery beaches. Good luck to this new Mom!

A lady named Surprise. Surprise was bitten by a shark sometime in the 24 hours before this photo was taken. Look at the full size view of this photo and one can clearly see the shark bite just in front of her dorsal fin. Surprise was born ~1979 and is thought to be a cross between a Common Bottlenose Dolphin and the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin. The dolphin population at Monkey Mia is comprised of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins.
Monkey Mia is a popular tourist destination located about 900 km north of Perth, Western Australia. The reserve is 25 km northeast of the town of Denham in the Shark Bay Marine Park and World Heritage Site. The main attraction are the bottlenose dolphins that have been coming close to shore for more than fifty years. Rangers from the Department of Parks and Wildlife (Western Australia) carefully supervise the Monkey Mia Dolphin Experience. Monkey Mia is also the lab location for extensive behavioral and biological research on bottlenose dolphins. Drawn to the area's famous 'beach dolphins', researchers Richard Connor and Rachel Smolker started the Monkey Mia Dolphin research project in 1982. Their research interests quickly expanded to include hundreds of the nearby Shark Bay dolphins. Since this visit, scientists have come from prestigious institutions in Australia, North America and Europe. The dolphins have been extensively studied by this international team of scientists since 1984.
