Last week I posted images I took of the ice sculptures clinging to reeds in a lake nearby. We went back there after a snowfall and this is what the reeds looked like this time.
Gardens by the Bay is a nature park spanning on reclaimed land.
It is located in the Central Region of Singapore.
Gardens by the Bay is a tropical garden designed to celebrate the plants of the tropics
In January 2006, Gardens by the Bay began an international master plan design competition to get world-class ideas for the Gardens. The competition attracted more than 70 entries sent by 170 firms, from over 24 countries, including 35 from Singapore. Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter, both from UK, were awarded the master plan design for the Bay South and East Gardens in September 2006.
Bay East Garden is 32 hectares (79 acres) in size and it has a 2-kilometre (1.2 mi) promenade frontage bordering the Marina Reservoir. An interim park was developed at Bay East Garden in support of the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. It is designed as a series of large tropical leaf-shaped gardens, each with its own specific landscaping design, character and theme.
Supertrees are uniquely designed vertical gardens ranging from 25 to 50 meters in height (82 to 164 feet), with emphasis placed on the vertical display of tropical flowering climbers, epiphytes and ferns.
Supertrees perform a multitude of functions, which include planting, shading and working as environmental engines for the gardens. They are home to enclaves of unique and exotic ferns, vines, orchids and also a vast collection of bromeliads such as Tillandsia, amongst other plants.

Happy Monochrome Thursday ;o)
I had to use an old shot of my favourite straw sunhat, as the weave is unravelling now, and it is no longer wearable. But it is (or was) so comfortable and great at shading me against the sun! Now I just need some more summer weather ;o)

The Gardens by the Bay is a nature park spanning 101 hectares in the Central Region of Singapore, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir. The park consists of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden (in Marina South), Bay East Garden (in Marina East) and Bay Central Garden (in Downtown Core and Kallang). The largest of the gardens is the Bay South Garden at 54 hectares designed by Grant Associates. Its Flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world. Being one of the popular tourist attractions in Singapore, the park received 6.4 million visitors in 2014, while topping its 20 millionth visitor mark in November 2015 and over 50 million in 2018.
Supertrees are the 18 tree-like structures that dominate the Gardens' landscape with heights that range between 25 metres and 50 metres. They were conceived and designed by Grant Associates, with the imaginative engineering of Atelier One and Atelier Ten. They are vertical gardens that perform a multitude of functions, which include planting, shading and working as environmental engines for the gardens. The Supertrees are home to enclaves of unique and exotic ferns, vines, orchids and also a vast collection of bromeliads such as Tillandsia, amongst other plants. They are fitted with environmental technologies that mimic the ecological function of trees: photovoltaic cells that harness solar energy which can be used for some of the functions of the Supertrees (such as lighting), similar to how trees photosynthesize, and collection of rainwater for use in irrigation and fountain displays, similar to how trees absorb rainwater for growth. The Supertrees also serve air intake and exhaust functions as part of the conservatories' cooling systems. There is an elevated walkway, the OCBC Skyway, between two of the larger Supertrees for visitors to enjoy a panoramic aerial view of the Gardens. Every night, at 7:45pm and 8:45pm, the Supertree Grove comes alive with a coordinated light and music show known as the Garden Rhapsody. The accompanying music to the show changes every month or so, with certain themes such as A World of Wonder and A Night of Musical Theatre, which features excerpts/pieces from films like Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean. 32437

The buildings of the Departments of Law and Central Administration (D3/AD) of the University of Economics (Wirtschaftsuniversität) in Vienna were designed by CRAB Studio in London and completed in 2014. Their colourful facades are covered with louvres made of natural timber that partially deal with sun shading and respond to the woodlands that surround the university campus.

Himalayan Balsam: Impatiens glandulifera is a large annual plant native to the Himalayas. Via human introduction it is now present across much of the Northern Hemisphere and is considered an invasive species in many areas. Uprooting or cutting the plants is an effective means of control.
Why is Himalayan balsam a problem?
Despite typically being found near water, Himalayan Balsam can spread rapidly into adjacent woodlands. It has a negative effect on native plants by shading them out. ... One of the biggest problems caused by Himalayan Balsam is the damage it causes to habitats along banks and riversides, such as fish spawning beds.
Himalayan balsam was introduced as a garden plant in 1839, but soon escaped and became widely naturalised along riverbanks and ditches, especially close to towns. It is fast-growing and spreads quickly, invading wet habitat at the expense of other, native flowers. Its explosive seed pods aid its spread by sending the seeds into the river, causing further dispersal downstream.
Our largest annual plant, it flowers from July to October.
Ospreys are very large, distinctively shaped hawks. Despite their size, their bodies are slender, with long, narrow wings and long legs. Ospreys fly with a marked kink in their wings, making an M-shape when seen from below.
Ospreys are brown above and white below, and overall they are whiter than most raptors. From below, the wings are mostly white with a prominent dark patch at the wrists. The head is white with a broad brown stripe through the eye. Juveniles have white spots on the back and buff shading on the breast.
Ospreys search for fish by flying on steady wing-beats and bowed wings or circling high in the sky over relatively shallow water. They often hover briefly before diving, feet first, to grab a fish.
thinking of J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851): in 1815, there was an outbreak of the volcano Tambora, worldwide the most important eruption after that one of the lake Taupo some 20.000 years before... this eruption changed the daylight for a long time and the sunsets in Europe have been so beautiful as never described before - all the shadings of red, orange and purple, sometimes even blue and green...
In a total eclipse of the moon, the inner part of Earth’s shadow, called umbra, falls on the moon’s face. Then at mid-eclipse, the entire moon is in shadow, which may appear blood red.
The street lamp itself was not so remarkable. It was the shading and texture of the pole I found interesting. (Bonneville Dam area IMG_4693.jpg)
There are infinite shadings of light and shadows and colors... it's an extraordinarily subtle language. Figuring out how to speak that language is a lifetime job.
