Sequoia National Park.California, USA.

In times like these, I look to trees. The sequoia trees we had planted won't grow as large as redwoods in California--at least not in my lifetime. Such fragile growth for such sturdy trunks.

Peace.

After a long time I returned to the three sequoia trees not far from my home. Back in the days I found it too hard to shoot. But now, with some growth - both the trees and me - I found a pleasing composition. It is a view I have learned from shooting the giants in California: You rarely can show them in their whole beauty. It was a freezing morning with -6°C, some soft fog and the snow which really adds up to the image.

A typical scene driving or wandering around Sequoia. Awesome trees you can hardly describe. They are sooooo tall you can not properly photograph them. The smell in the forest is divine.

Here we see two examples in the life of the Giant Sequoia trees of the Sierra Nevada.

What differentiates these trees from their coastal relatives is they are shorter and thicker.

Sequoias are among the longest lived things on the earth, some in this grove began their lives before the birth of Christ.

It is a humbling experience to walk among these groves and to experience the majesty of these incredible trees as they tower toward the heavens above the comparatively diminutive me.

The foreground tree has clearly been fire damaged, but not been killed. Sequoias have fire retardant bark and actually require fire to open their cones so they can germinate. The background tree is in the condition that most commonly ends the life of these giants, having fallen over.

Giant sequoias can grow to an average height of 220 feet with trunk diameters 23 feet, are the largest trees on Earth.

Giant Sequoias are considered one of the oldest, largest trees in the world. Armed with a remarkable resistance to disease, sequoias can live to 300 feet tall an measure 30 feet around

This is a giant sequoia that fell more than 300 years ago. Giant sequoias are resistant to decay, so their remains can linger for a long period of time if undisturbed. The remaining root system is about 5-6m high

It is found in the Mariposa Grove, located near Wawona, CA., in the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park. It is the largest grove of giant sequoias in the park, with several hundred mature examples of the tree. Two of its trees are among the 30 largest giant sequoias in the world.

Huge sequoia trees in Mariposa Grove, Yosemite Park. This photo was just at sunset, the light was gone from the ground but the tall trees were still clothed.

Old Growth Redwood

I find it challenging to photograph these magnificent trees. I chose to focus on a section of the trunk with its twisting bark and new growth.

Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.

Sequoia National Park

UC Botanical Garden. -- Explored!!

Naturally, Sequoia National Park's namesake is the Sequoia tree. Big is an understatement. Here's one next to "normal" large fir trees. They are the largest trees in the world by volume and can be over 5000 years old. And they only grow here in small groves on the western part of the Sierra Nevada range. They are so big, I found them a bit of a challenge to photograph. And as with many things natural and rare, they are endangered and their continued existence is uncertain. Normally resistant to wildfire, the intense 2021 fire that swept through the area killed as much as 20% of the ancient tree population.

Young sequoia trees are seen in Sequoia National Park

Back in September 2009, our family went on a 3-week vacation across the western US, trying to visit as many national parks as possible. Being homeschooled allowed us to go when most kids were back in school, so the parks were not as crowded.

Went camping to Sequoia for the second time. This time the weather was not on our side.
