As a twenty-one year old woman, I am often faced with the need and desire to fulfill two or more conflicting roles. By showing the audience only the black and white, I encourage them to reflect on their own gray areas. I use quilts, traditionally a woman's medium, as sites to talk about sexuality, self-image, and stereotypes.

As far as I can remember I had never liked my body, or at least was not satisfied with it. In Iraq, as I grew up my body seemed to like to gain weight while most of my friends were so “fit” and lean. I struggled to even buy jeans pants because my legs were thicker than the average person. This weight gain got worse in my teens, and even when I played sports like soccer several hours a day my body just didn’t like to lose weight that much. Even when I lost weight I seemed to have larger chest, calves, etc.

This made my family and friend jokingly tease me; they would say things like, “Fadi is built like a tank!”. Even though those remarks were few and made with good spirit they made me want to be lean like my friends were—I didn’t want to be a tank! Then when I took a look at my dad’s family I realized I would never become lean like friends, my genetics were different! I could never explain how my friend could eat 7 large slices of piazza for lunch and be so skinny while I gained weight by eating normal portions! So by the end of my teens I finally accepted the fact that I would never be lean and “fit” and I felt stuck inside this body; I hated my body and considered it to be more like a curse.

In 2003 while I was working in the warehouse, here in Canada, a co-worker who was into bodybuilding training told me something like, “You know, Fadi, if you start weight training you will gain muscles fast because it looks like your body likes to gain weight.” I had no idea what he was talking about. Then 6 months ago I decided to go to the university gym since it is free and I started noticing that my body really likes to gain muscles. My forearms were getting huge quickly, my chest, calves, quads, back, and so on were all progressing nicely. While my friends who are lean were asking me, “Hey Fadi, what exercises do you do for your forearms?”, or, “How do you exercise your calves?”, or, “How much can you bench press?!” (Interestingly I don’t even do bench press!) And these are guys who have been weight training longer than I have. And I even have a very lazy exercises schedule: I train every muscle only once a week.

Then a couple of months ago a classmate who is very lean gave up weight training after few months because he said that no matter what he does he never seems to gain muscles. That’s when it occurred to me, “My body is not a curse but a blessing.” That was the first time ever I actually liked my body and didn’t want to change its type anymore.

Nowadays I am content and happy with who God has made me: my body, my personality, and my talents. I don’t want to change anything about myself because I accept the way God has created me—I like and am thankful for His work. The only thing I want to change is what He wants to change: conform my character to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ.

The Bible says in Deuteronomy 32:4, “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.”

God has created me and you--He created all of us--and He had good things in mind when He created us. He created us out of love and not to torture us—He wants to bless us and not curse us. Whatever body type you have, hair colour or type, eyes colour, height, etc, and even disability or challenges I want you to know that God loves you and He didn’t make a mistake when He created you. He doesn’t see your human defined shortcomings as shortcomings at all. God doesn’t operate nor pays attention to human standards and in the end it is only what He thinks will matter.

It is wise and good to embrace ourselves and each other as God has created us. If we don’t we will spend all our lives complaining, being dissatisfied and peaceless and will more than likely not serve Him or obey Him because we are too busy focusing on ourselves as the world see us. And in the end we will still have to give account to Him about the shortcomings He cares about: why didn’t we accept His Son, and why didn’t we obey Him?

I think it is fitting now to show you this video so every girl knows what she is competing with when she pays attention to those “beauty” standards shown in magazines articles, TV shows, and ads: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U

Yes, you saw it correct: you are competing against Photoshop!

Here are few Bible verses to help you gain a godly view about yourself and others:

"Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God."

(Romans 15:7)

"For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful,

I know that full well."

(Psalm 139:13-14)

“Because you are precious in my eyes,

and honored, and I love you,

I give men in return for you,

peoples in exchange for your life.”

(Isaiah 43:4)

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

(1 Samuel 16:7)

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

(2 Corinthians 3:18)

What are your experiences with self-esteem, self-image? How do you see yourself? What are your struggles? What are your favourite Bible verses that deal with this topic?

all you need is love

Thinking more about ways in which we see ourselves, how I see myself.

Thinking about learning to embrace myself as a sexual being, a lover, an erotic creature.

I have so many ideas for this theme...I love this group (365 Pool)

all you need is love

As a young boy, I fell absolutely in love with the first movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata 14, more popularly known as Moonlight Sonata. It was my want to learn to play this piece of music that drove my ambition to learn to play piano - an ambition I never fully realised.

I took keyboard lessons as a kid - maybe about twelve, thirteen years old - but didn't stick with it and now, many years later, absolutely regret it.

What I learned back then though has allowed me to develop my ability to play by ear, and I'm quite satisfied in my ability to jam along with my mates who are far more accomplished musicians than I.

What I can now play of Moonlight Sonata is nothing short of terrible, but I will never tire of it nor of the sound of any piano that can play it.

For today's Daily Shoot challenge:

Make a self-portrait, with or without the camera in the frame,

I thought it would be cool to get a picture of me sitting on top of the street light that's in our front yard.

Unfortunately, shortly after I made it to the top, but before I could trigger my camera, the leg I hurt the other day cramped up and I lost my grip. Luckily, just about this time, Christine came out to see if she could help with my shoot. She saw what was happening and had the presence of mind to lean on the shutter release and document my flight earthward.

I figure that even though I didn't push the button, I did get everything set up, so I can claim this as a self portrait and use it in my 365 and for the Dailyshoot.

BTW, I hardly suffered a scratch during my landing -- Christine was there to break my fall. Thanks, honey! She'll be good as new once she gets out of her full body cast in a few months.... ;-)

Another take on this image post.

The kitchen is the place where I always had to do a lot of things; bringing firewood, cooking, washing dishes. Pigs walking around, smoke clouding the room every time while cooking. If it was water vapor, the room felt like heaven; if it was smoke, we had to bow to walk.

And now, we do not need to light a fire, because there are new cooking tools here. What’s more, my father had a lung disease; the smoke can no longer exist.

If nothing else, I always try to achieve something new and different with my photography. Something to challenge and push the boundaries of what I'm capable of doing personally and technically.

This isn't the first shot I've ever spent time arranging, but it's certainly the one that I've spent longest thinking about in terms of subject, lighting, colour and composition. I would never have dreamed of doing it were it not for starting the 52 project, and it's another one of those shots where what I've captured is almost exactly as I saw it in my head.

I'm very fortunate in that I know people who appreciate my passion for viewing life through a lens, and share my desire to push boundaries.

Obviously this shot wouldn't have been possible without the female component and, within the terms of anonymity we agreed upon before shooting, I would like to thank The Girl for agreeing to pose with me.

A pretty light patch at the bottom of my garden that appears at about six in the evening on a good day.

=== Self-esteem is what a person thinks of their own self-worth. It includes beliefs and emotions, and is reflected by behavior. ===

In today's world, girls and women are supposed to follow ideals of beauty, appearance and weight, imposed by multiple interconnecting industries that benefit from making them feel bad about themselves. The more women hate their bodies, the more they can buy dieting products that harm them, pile up the cosmetics and consumer products they don't really need, and subject themselves to all kinds of painful practices and plastic surgeries that would make them look pretty. In a world that loves youth, anti-aging creams become best sellers. The same goes for bleaching products that enforce the norm that white skin is beautiful skin. All this is being perpetuated by the entertainment, fashion, media, advertising, diet and cosmetics industries.

In her 1991 book, The Beauty Myth, author Naomi Wolf argued that women were under assault by the "beauty myth" in five areas: work, religion, sex, violence, and hunger. Wolf wrote that women should have "the choice to do whatever we want with our faces and bodies without being punished by an ideology that is using attitudes, economic pressure, and even legal judgments regarding women's appearance to undermine us psychologically and politically."
