I am grateful for goals with soul. I spent the morning going through a desire map workbook to bring myself to my core desired feelings. Jotting down words, crossing out words, circling words, all based on how I want to feel in 2016. The process is beautiful. I love words. The idea is to create goals and make plans based how you want to feel. Make sense, right? Thank you to my great friend Carrie for introducing me to Danielle LaPorte and her books last year. This is my 2nd year creating goals with soul.

Fresh from the high of a gig the night before, i attempted to attend a relatives funeral, this would have been my 16th funeral of the year and really took a hit on my depression.

Having been fighting depression for the past 18 months or so, i knew that going for a walk at some point that day with my camera would clear my mind and help me relax and reflect on my tough times recently. On the way to the wake i came across this horse in a field alone, very timid at first but something about her just spoke to me and i spent the next half an hour or so waiting for her to come toward me.

Ara Shatan (whose Guraghinya meaning is 'Devil's Lake') is ascribed to a wizard who long ago fought the local people. When the wizard was defeated he plunged his spear into the ground and angrily cried, "Let this be the devil's home" whereupon the ground collapsed forming the crater. Locals maintain that a stone thrown into the lake would be hurled back by the devil.

This lake is perched on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, a massive structure about 6000km in length which can be seen from space, caused by tectonic activity. See the article in wikipedia for more background. The lake varies in colour from blue, through green to rust.

In just over a week, the regrowth is close to too much to recognise discernible shapes.

Rufus “Catfish” Mayfield, a youthful community activist and chair of Pride, Inc.—the black job training and employment organization that Marion Barry helped organize—is shown in an undated photograph at an unknown location circa 1967.

Mayfield gained prominence as an activist in the city when he led a campaign against police brutality in the spring of 1967 after a friend was shot and killed by police.

After police officer William L. Ruff shot and killed Clarence Booker in Northeast Washington, D.C., the 20-year-old Mayfield led a series of protests, including a sit-in demanding a citizens inquiry into the shooting.

A grand jury was convened, but no indictment returned.

The confrontations, however, caught the eye of former D.C. Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee chair Marion Barry.

Barry quit SNCC earlier in the year, took a job with the United Planning Organization and was looking for ways to further black economic empowerment.

He teamed up with Mayfield and Mary Treadwell to form Pride, Inc. on a $300,000 grant to put inner city young people to work during a summer jobs program.

Mayfield became chairman of the board and the chief spokesperson for Pride and led the effort of 1,000 youths in green uniforms to clean up litter, clear weeds and remove trash from a number of targeted neighborhoods during the summer of 1967.

The choice of Mayfield led Rep. Joel Broyhill (D-Va.) to blast Pride, Inc.

He said the U.S. Department of Labor, which provided the funding, was “guilty of a direct and deliberate affront to the House and Senate of the United States Congress in placing convicted felon Rufus Mayfield in a position of guidance and authority over 900 District of Columbia youth.”

Broyhill also attacked the program for paying $56 a week which he said would “undoubtedly be more than the fathers earn in many instances.”

Mayfield survived Broyhill’s attack and the Pride ultimately received $1 million more in funding to carry the program through for a full year.

However, the District police charged him in separate incidents with assault and auto theft in arrests that were covered widely in the local press, although charges were ultimately dropped in both cases.

By November, Mayfield resigned from Pride—under internal pressure, according to Mayfield. Treadwell, Barry and executive director Carroll Harvey allegedly were taking the organization in a direction that Mayfield disagreed with, although whatever differences existed were never spelled out publicly.

While his star shined brightly for only a few months, Mayfield was responsible for inspiring young people in the District and in launching what became Marion Barry’s summer jobs for youth program.

He later found work as a stand-up comedian before Mayor Marion Barry gave him a job as a community relations specialist in 1985 with the Department of Human Services.

Mayfield briefly resurfaced publicly in 1991 when he led a campaign against newly-elected Mayor Sharon Pratt Dixon’s effort to fire 2,000 District employees grade DS-11 and above. Mayfield lost the battle to keep his job, but was rehired to the D.C. government in 1995 where he helped lead an immunization campaign for D.C. children among other responsibilities.

Mayfield has continued to remain active in D.C. political life, campaigning more recently for Muriel Bowser, but he will probably best be remembered for the fiery youth who sought to uplift District of Columbia young people.

Don't let your surroundings stop you from growing. #WednesdayWisdom

Taking this photograph created a deep sense of vulnerability and fear within me. It shows more skin than I normally would ever want to show, but I think the message I want to share is more important.

I have been struggling with overcoming Anorexia. It has been very difficult to overcome because it is entwined within the matrix of my PTSD. I have failed to receive any real help with my PTSD.

This struggle with finding solutions for my PTSD has made progress dealing with my eating disorder very difficult. Every time I try to figure things out and ask for assistance I am derailed or ignored. I have been tying on my own to get better but it seems like I am only getting worse. I stopped working out because I knew it was only fueling my anorexia. I tried to consume more calories but when I get over a certain point I start to feel extremely depressed (for lack of better word) and overwhelmed. If I turn off my emotions I can force myself to consume more calories and pretend that I do not exist. But the feelings do exist and cause me emotional pain. I have not weighed myself for a month, which is quite the accomplishment. The only problem with not weighing myself is that I have no way to track my progress. Therefore I weighed myself this morning and found out I have continued to lose weight, not gain weight. Now I am further underweight for someone my height than I ever have been; this should make me happy but I am sad.

I am sad because I am not able to help myself. I feel helpless and quite hopeless about getting better. What I want is for people to understand that people like me, who suffer from multiple mental health issues, need special care. You can’t simply throw words and theories at us and hope we fix ourselves. We need professional help and (almost more importantly) we need social support from our family and friends (if we have any). Without social support healing is extremely difficult, especially if the people who you need (or want) to support you are actually doing the opposite.

I feel ashamed and sad for having Anorexia. Often people tell me to “just go eat more” or “don’t think about it” or “get over it/move on” but these statements make me feel very defeated. Statements like these are sometimes meant as encouragement, but often they are ways for people to minimize the feelings of helplessness they feel and or to make the problem go away by pretending it does not exist. But these statements are hurtful and simply add to my feelings of helplessness. I truly feel stuck, like I can’t get better. I am trying so hard but still coming up a failure.

It is not always obvious who suffers from an eating disorder. Men and women work hard to disguise or hide their eating disorders because we feel that we need them to survive. The majority of those who suffer with an eating disorder do not look emaciated and do not need to look that way in order to need help. Please don't look at someone who you think is thin-normal weight and tell them they are fine just because their bones are not sticking out or they don't look like the skeletons popular media displays (those cases are very rare).

Please help the men and women who suffer from Eating Disorders by visiting any of these websites and either learn more or donate.
