The Selfhelp Home was founded in 1938, as the Holocaust began, as a volunteer mutual-aid society where refugees and survivors could find community and rebuild their lives. Selfhelp officially became a ‘Home” in 1951 when it purchased the Drexel Mansion in Hyde Park, housing 19 residents. As the need surpassed space, Selfhelp purchased and rebuilt the building at 908 W. Argyle St. and subsequently expanded and purchased the 920 W. Argyle building next door several years later.
The organization in its advertising touts its service to Holocaust survivors. Here’s my experience. A friend’s mother was evicted from The Selfhelp Home some ten years ago because of insufficient funds. She was not only a survivor but as an inmate at Buchenwald was a slave laborer in the Mittlewerk bunker machining part for V1 and V2 rockets. The Jewish Federation of Chicago (the home is not part of the JUF) failed to assist her either.

On Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009, we had Three (3) Speakers - Holly Baade (pronounced Bay-Dee),Johnnie McClelland, and Jairek Robbins.
Holly Baade spoke about her journey as The Joyful Warrior, and showed us what a drum solo was really supposed to be like.
Johnnie Marie McClelland spoke on Having Great Relationships
And Jairek Robbins gave a presentation on Creating Value regardless of the economy!
As usual, Sheena prepared a great buffet dinner for us, and we ate plenty good too!
The group is growing, we had around 40 people in attendance tonight. Not bad for our third meeting.
And yes, I took a few pictures…

Prabhouti's widowhood should've been easier than most since she had four sons who could care for her. But the oldest two abandoned her, leaving her with two school-aged boys to provide for.
Over 200,000 bricks have been made for a new hospital soon to be constructed near Nkutu Village in the Dedza District of Malawi. The Malawi Project and the Dzidalire Community Development Agency have teamed up with the villages in order to build the new medical facility.
Ashok was diagnosed with leprosy as a teenage. He experienced some stigma from his community. TLM provided him with skills training and he is now a plumber-carpenter.
There are 15 women in the group. Each member saves 20 rupees a month. Three women from the group learnt candle making. They will then teach the other women. The group will run a candle making business, selling their products at local markets.

Buddha Lal Das faced discrimination due to his ulcers until he learned self-care. His self-care group is now a self-help group running a savings credit scheme and Buddha Lal sees the importance of raising awareness in the community.
