I've been trying to figure out a process for creating gritty, dark portraits for quite a while. More creative, intriguing portraits are something I'd like to work on in 2014 (not exactly a resolution, more of a goal). Never got it quite the way I wanted it until today, and I have a fellow Flickrite to thank for the tip that helped me get the results I wanted.

Check my blog post to see step by step exactly how I created this shot.

“Given enough time, you could convince yourself that loneliness was something better, that it was solitude, the ideal condition for reflection, even a kind of freedom." - Dean Koontz

Greetings my Flickr friends! Two uploads within two days! Woah! I'm doing good! :-) For now...

So I actually played with my camera today! Was kind of fun to see what I could invent while being in the house. Inspiration was a little lacking.

Some of you might remember a while back me mentioning a good friend of mine who purchased her first DSLR, and who wanted me to go through a series of photo challenges with her...remember? A challenge a few weeks ago was "Self Portrait" and I think this photo is the best I'll come up with.. :-)

I'm excited though because I convinced that same friend to create a Flickr account! She has yet to upload images, but I'm looking forward to see what she comes up with ;-)

Don't worry...I'll be sharing her link with you all so you can follow/encourage her too! :-)

So...this one is for Helena!

From Wikipedia:

Balboa Park is a 1,200 acre (4.9 km²) urban cultural park in San Diego, California. The Park is named after the Spanish maritime explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa. It was the location of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition and 1935 California Pacific International Exposition which each created architectural landmarks for the Park. More.

Pretty much feeling like a zombie tonight. I'm running on 2 hours sleep. I was at emerge overnight with my wife who has been having what we/they think is gallbladder attacks. I hope they do something for her soon. I hate to see her in pain like that. I just grabbed a quick shot while going to get her some meds tonight.

have a great night friends. I'll check your steams in the morning

Luna's reflection, curious about what's going on

I was inspired by this story's last photo: www.boredpanda.com/dark-sides-and-hidden-stories-behind-f...

Actually this was taken before the rain started. Hot sunbreaks are such teases.

I'm ending my 365 soon. :]

And frankly, I like the simplicity here. Easy shot.

Just a bit of selective dodging on my part.

Doing this for a group. Today was the deadline. I swear, I'm not sad. I am not necessarily having the best day because I'm not feeling all that great today BUT I was laughing in almost all of my footage except for this one, which was the first one I snapped to test the light. Ended up liking it the best so go figure! ;) PS: This was shot hand-held in my bathroom while my boys napped. I am wearing my favourite boyfriend sweater. I couldn't be bothered to use a tripod or self timer.

Oh yeah, I was tagged ... 10 random things about me, here goes. The Christmas edition ...

1. I have a really hard time singing "Happy Holidays" by Andy Williams in my own voice. I have to sing it just like him. It's really annoying because I sing it loud and with a ton of vibratto. The same goes for "2000 Miles" by the Pretenders. My secret to singing like Chrissie is pretending to sing bad, ha!

2. Favourite Christmas song this year is 'Last Christmas' sung only by WHAM or the Glee cast. I never really listened to the lyrics until now and it's a real winner. "I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice". Classic.

3. "A Christmas Story" is still my favourite Christmas movie. There's magic in that movie (it was also shot in Toronto, holla!!!). "Love Actually" is a close second for me, but I don't necessarily classify it as a Christmas movie because I watch it all year round! I also love Elf, Just Friends, The Holiday, Badder Santa, Dutch, One Magic Christmas, and Christmas Vacation. Yeah, I like movies! ;)

4. I don't drink Starbucks too often but there's something about that red cup that makes me want to drink one a day!! I absolutely adore gingerbread lattes. I get them made non fat but with full whip. Go figure! ;)

5. My favourite Christmas gift given to me by my husband: a pair of fingerless mitts when we first met. He knitted them for me out of wool. It was our first Christmas together. It took him 2 months to make (he had no idea what he was doing). 2 of his fingers went numb. If that ain't love, I don't know what is!

6. Every year, my hubby and I bake something special for Christmas. Last year, we made killer gingerbread cookies at Christmas time. It's soft and lasts for weeks. Add a little royal icing to it and it's golden! We made 80 bags last year for family, friends, clients, and strangers. They didn't last long in our household. In fact, we had people fighting for them!

7. For the last five years, we decided to donate to charity in lieu of gifts. Yes, we still buy gifts for the kiddies and our parents (from our kids) but we are huge believers in giving back to those less fortunate. One year, I invited a complete stranger to our home for Christmas. She almost came too but ended up in the hospital. She was 80 and called our home by accident on Christmas Eve. I felt bad and invited her over. My Dad thought I was crazy but agreed, no one should be alone on Christmas.

8. When I was a kid, one of my favourite memories at Christmas was getting a new pair of glow in the dark PJ's. My siblings and I thought we were so cool so, it's a tradition that I am happily starting with my own kids. Other notable favourite Christmas memories from my childhood include receiving a Snoopy Sno Cone Machine. It rocks my world! And to this day, I am still a big fan of shaved ice!

9. I ruined Christmas for every single kid in my grade 3 class when Santa came to visit. I don't know what possessed me to do this but I pulled his beard down and revealed his true identity. When all the kids screamed and started crying, I knew I was in trouble. "Oh, did you not know there's no such thing as Santa Claus?" Oh crap! PS: I got sent to the Principal's office shortly after. Yeah, I suck but I really didn't know better.

10. Christmas is a magical time of year for me. My husband proposed to me at Christmas. And now, with the boys in our life, it is truly one of my favourite holidays. Seeing their faces on Christmas morning is definitely one of my favourite things ever. That and Salsoul Disco Christmas. It is pure magic. I dare you to listen and not shake what yo mama gave you!

I tagged a few of you. Feel free :)

52 week 2014 Challenge: reflection

there was/is so so much more that I want to do with this theme. I will definitely revisit it when I can grab some more time. I do however like the simple concept here. Fun to play!

My 1st time seeing an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione in the flesh!

They were outside playing in the foot and a half of snow that fell last night. I stepped out to snap a few quick shots and caught my reflection in the glass of our back door. He caught me catching my reflection.

I wanted to take underwater pictures of my Ariel hair one more time before I dyed it RAINBOW so I went swimming in my pool.

This may seem like a multi exposed shot, which it is not. What you see is a picture of the (self) reflection in a sheet of glass against a garbage container on the street.
