Relationships thrive best in an atmosphere of personal freedom. It is only when one partner or another imposes his particular design in life that individuality (and the joy experienced when a lover feels appreciated for his own personality) is crushed. Under an arrangement in which one partner’s “trip” is paramount and in which he becomes a director, spontaneity fails and a certain prearranged style takes its place. One lover accepts and the other dispenses: sooner or later this arrangement is bound to extract a toll. The “leader” may begin to wonder if his lover has a mind of his one , and may go looking for someone whom he admires for taking more initiative. Or the less assertive of the two may grow tired of following directions and seek for himself a partner who’ll appreciate him for his own qualities.
Most people do their “best” as they see it, although it is not always obvious to others, particularly when those others have a preconceived notion of what constitutes “the best”. Lovers must make a special effort to find out enough of one another so that whatever is truly important to each becomes clear once this happens, a partner can begin to understand what’s best from his lover’s stand-point. The result is not only a fuller appreciation of the intricacies of another being but a positive response from that person as well.
This means that neither partner must lean thoughtlessly for support on the other. There are times when anyone must take a rest and it’s part of the comfort of a close relationship that both partners feel free to do so if necessary. But a temporary arrangement mustn’t become a life-style and even if there’s an equitable division of labor, both partners should make sure they’re capable of making their own way in the world outside the home. A loving union assures that each member is self-regulating so that if one partner or the other withdraws or dies, the other will be equipped wit his own strengths.
